A dog that fought off a suicide bomber in Afghanistan, saving the lives of several US soldiers, was euthanized by mistake by animal shelter staff in Arizona. An investigation was underway Tuesday into why Target was put to sleep at the Pinal County Animal Care & Control center. An unnamed employee was placed on administrative leave for failing to follow procedures. The shepherd-mix dog was picked up last Friday after going missing from its owner Sgt. Terry Young's home in the San Tan Valley area, southeast of Phoenix. The dog, which was not microchipped or licensed with the county, was euthanized Monday.

that’s horrible.
How sad....... Just wrong.
I thought that was a sweater!
LOL....That and tired of smellin like wet doggy all the time.
My dog was at least trustworthy and loyal and never let me down. Saved my bacon a few times.
but yes for the record:
I will be very clear and capitalize for you:
EVEN THOUGH I ACTUALLY LIKE MOST BIG GUARD DOGS AND PITBULLS BETTER THAN MOST HUMANS, I DO NOT THINK DOGS, CATS, HORSES, PARROTS, TURTLES AND SO FORTH AS PETS HAVE A MORAL EQUIVALENCY WITH HUMANS AND THEIR VALUE AS ANIMALS IS A MATTER OF COMMON SENSE PERSPECTIVE.
I post pet stories about my bulldog myself so not sure where you were going with that remark.
I never said what you are accusing me of. Common FR tactic. I was commenting on how many freepers are rather wacky about pets and in particular animal abuse...in response to a post btw...not from thin air.
She will love that. She is 46, I'm 53. She has great genes. I don't..except for height.
She does watch her caloric intake though...been starving since 1980.
Jeez - thanks for the heads-up on my anniversary date there - I had no idea myself!
no... but how pathetic that you won't admit your error and ill-treatment of PalmettoMason...
Actually, you did do what I said you did.
You assumed a view that wasn't even mentioned on the thread and gave yet another condescending lecture by those who think we cannot differenate between human life and animal life.
Now, I have seen very few Free Republic people 'wacky' over their pets.
Somethimes hyperbolic language is used in regards to what should be done with those who hurt animals.
So, when a case of animal abuse is reported, we don't need you (and others) to tell animal lovers that humans are more important than animals.
But, every time a thread comes up, someone will pipe in with a comment about abortion.
And there was no post on that thread that necessitated you responding by informing people that a dog is 'just' a dog.
Why? I've toyed with this idea, but what's the down side?
The "So what, it's JUST PalmettoMason" crowd took less time that that. LOL.
Honestly, though, I've followed this story for a couple of days and it's horribly disgusting. It just goes to show us dog owners that the world is not a friendly place for dogs and do everything you can to protect them. ID tags would be the least and cheapest intervention here.
And a tribute to Target. Though her heart has stopped, it still beats in the men she saved. Good girl. RIP :(
LOL. Thanks.
Early on in this mess, I was accused of having neither brains nor manners. As I look back over the posts (AND posting history ), I believe my manners here have been far superior, and as for brains... well, even I can understand a post from a simpleton like me.
That's ok. Our dogs would still love us and they love more unconditionally than a bright person who can just read 4 words. hehe
Heehee indeed! My boys are both curled up with me. Life is good.
Have a great evening.
This thread’s a coupla days old now but I just got to it today. Anyhow...
“Agree....yet wondering how it went from DOD bomb dog to stray status.....unheard of in my arena.”
Was never an American military dog. She was befriended by Americans over there.
IIRC, this dog was one of 3 or 4 Afghan-born strays given a taste of the good life on a US base. The fellas’ kindness was repaid when the dogs confronted a suicide bomber before he could position himself where he wanted. One of the pups died either immediately or due to blast injuries. The rest made their way to the States with the heros whose lives they saved. Target went through a lot to get here only to be killed needlessly in the land of the big PX.
Not to mention, I’m uneasy about ANY “tagging” of ANY creature. The dogs are the testing ground; soon they’ll be chipping all of us - maybe our babies when they’re in the Nursery.
God bless his precious, precious Soul.
