A dog that fought off a suicide bomber in Afghanistan, saving the lives of several US soldiers, was euthanized by mistake by animal shelter staff in Arizona. An investigation was underway Tuesday into why Target was put to sleep at the Pinal County Animal Care & Control center. An unnamed employee was placed on administrative leave for failing to follow procedures. The shepherd-mix dog was picked up last Friday after going missing from its owner Sgt. Terry Young's home in the San Tan Valley area, southeast of Phoenix. The dog, which was not microchipped or licensed with the county, was euthanized Monday.

There is no procedure in these killing facilities. If your animal has no microchip that ‘they can read’ or fell/moved in it’s body somewhere...they aren’t going to wait the 3 days or whatever to put them down. This is common!!!

Just the title of this article makes me sick. The poor dog; the heart-broken owner.

When we took our dogs to puppy training at the humane society, the trainer (about 25 years with the humane society) told us to have as much identification on our dogs as possible. Have them microchipped, tagged, and registered with the local society. We live in Florida, and she said after the 2004 hurricanes, there were so many good dogs put down because there was no identification on them, and there was just not enough room for them all. Ours are chipped through our vet; a tag with their name, our names, and our phone number; and another tag registered with the local humane society.

A couple of problems we've had with the chip: Ours were microchipped before they came to us. The first one somehow worked its way out and was found in his fur. The 2nd one didn't register when checked by our vet. We had them both rechipped. For some reason, I checked with Avid (who keeps the information) several weeks after registering them, and they had totally messed up the information. If either had been lost, and the information on file with Avid had to be relied upon, it would not have worked. In spite of this, it's still good to get this. Collars containing tags can be lost.

They still would have killed the dog-they are just using that as an excuse.

Just more government incompetency.

Administrative leave= paid vacation and nothing will happen.

Look, the poster made it clear. Putting down that dog is not a joke and that’s the way he made it sound.

Perhaps, you should re-read what he said instead of making knee jerk remarks.

we just think innocent helpless humans should be at the top of the affection chain

Where is this chain and how do you follow it? By not posting pet stories? LOL

Of course we don’t know but I’d like to think this dog is somewhere in a green field with a milkbone path, an abundance of squirrels, a rich cream fountain and lots of anything else he wants.

There was a thread on over the weekend that spoke about a dog that was killed, and a group of folks got on saying it was “just a dog” PM forgot to post the sarcasm tag with the post.

And why are you bringing up that issue on this thread?

No one has suggested anything draconian happen to the individual who did this except be fired.

So, we are capable of feeling sadness at both the loss of people AND animals and don't place them on a equal level.

That is a liberal view, not a conservative one.

I do appreciate your post and have no doubt you love your dogs and they you; however; it just didn’t sound like you were making light of anything. It sounded like you were ridiculing people.

I hope you understand what I am seeing.

What exactly is it that you thought I said?

I'm trying to understand how you could have possibly misinterpreted my post.

Looks like a Shepherd/Golden Retriever. The best dog we ever had was that mix and that photo could be a photo of her.

Comedy of errors cost this hero his life. No microchip/tattoo/tag present. One mistake after another led to the death of the dog.
