The University of Mississippi has terminated its mascot, "Colonel Reb." The mascot, an archetypal Southern gentleman with a hat, cane, and a little bow-tie, is of course racist.
Affable, bearded and jaunty, with a bright costume that cleverly foiled his dark history on the plantation, Col. Reb, when he was alive, looked rather like that other infamous slave-driver, Col. Sanders, whose inscrutable and permanent smile these days (in markets where he still shows his face) offers only a faint clue as to the fortunes he's made in his long, post-war masquerade as a peddler of fried chicken.
"We just want it to be over," said one Mississippi student on the subject of Col. Reb's execution.
Watch your back, Sanders.
There is of course nothing sacred about a football mascot or a corporate brand, and nothing particularly sad about the disappearance of either one, except for the fact that now there is nothing left of Southern symbolism to erase.

And now we learn that what legions of Americans consider to be a transcendent symbol of extraordinary military leadership and valor, states' rights, indefatigable heroism, enduring pride and strength in the face of terrible odds and calamitous defeat – the Confederate battle flag – is now officially deemed a symbol of hate by the U.S. armed forces. Prospective members of all branches of the armed forces who happen to have a "Confederate flag" tattoo are automatically rejected.

When they once again encounter their ancestors, which I believe they will, how will so many Americans account for their feeble treachery?
Maybe, like the Mississippi student, they will say: "We just wanted it to be over."

Announced maybe but hadn’t done it yet. There was still plenty of time to work out a deal. Lincoln was elected in 1860. South Carolina seceded. In 1861 the lower south seceded and formed the Confederacy. Then the upper south seceded right before the Battle of Bull Run. States rights to not be hit with excessive taxes and ruled by an ever increasingly oppressive federal government.

That period back then was like now. Most of the north didn’t care anything about black people but they sure could use the issue rhetorically to their advantage. The war was all about money.
If northern folks were universally so much more “enlightened” how come most black people in northern cities are still conveniently tucked behind freeways 150 years later?

Social "justice" has created a legion of wussies and wannabees, who will give it all away, at the drop of a big toothed comb. When challenged the least bit, they rollover like frightened dogs, paws up, licking the heels of any and all foes.
Exactly, The north uses them for political pawns, to keep division going and for their votes. Blacks are happier in the south. They are very friendly and everyone actually feels equal here. You don’t have all the accusations of “racist” here. The blacks know they are smart enough to get jobs and college entrance without affirmative action. They aren’t treated like they are too stupid to do it on their own. They still believe in you want it then go get it. Don’t wait for somebody to hand it to you. Of course there are exceptions everywhere but I am talking as a rule. We have some of the nicest black folks in the country here. They don’t ask to be treated special, just equal and thats what they get.

What the heck are you talking about? The rebel congress had met and inaugurated Davis as their president almost a month before Lincoln was inaugurated. That sure seems like an indication that they'd done something.
Lincoln was elected in 1860.
And inaugurated in March 1861. What exactly was he supposed to do in the interim?

If you live within that civilization, then the advanced countries of Europe and of European origin are your last best hope. If you are fortunate enough to live in one of those places, then the English-speaking countries are your last best hope. And if you live in an English-speaking country, then the United States of America is your last best hope. And if you are so blessed as to dwell in that country, then South Carolina is your last best hope.
