That period back then was like now. Most of the north didn’t care anything about black people but they sure could use the issue rhetorically to their advantage. The war was all about money.

If northern folks were universally so much more “enlightened” how come most black people in northern cities are still conveniently tucked behind freeways 150 years later?

Exactly, The north uses them for political pawns, to keep division going and for their votes. Blacks are happier in the south. They are very friendly and everyone actually feels equal here. You don’t have all the accusations of “racist” here. The blacks know they are smart enough to get jobs and college entrance without affirmative action. They aren’t treated like they are too stupid to do it on their own. They still believe in you want it then go get it. Don’t wait for somebody to hand it to you. Of course there are exceptions everywhere but I am talking as a rule. We have some of the nicest black folks in the country here. They don’t ask to be treated special, just equal and thats what they get.

imh...most all conflicts (99.9%) throughout the history of this planet has been. Someone(s) removing money from someone(s), those someone(s) have an opposite and equal reaction and presto....conflict.
