The new Fox News poll of the Delaware Senate race shows Democratic nominee Chris Coons continuing to enjoy a double-digit lead against Republican Christine O'Donnell.
The numbers: Coons 54%, O'Donnell 39%. The survey of likely voters has a ±3% margin of error. There is no previous Fox News poll of this race. However, this poll was conducted through a Rasmussen offshoot, Pulse Opinion Research, which performs made-to-order robopolls. The previous Rasmussen poll from last week, taken right after O'Donnell's upset win in the primary over moderate Congressman Mike Castle, gave Coons a lead of 53%-42%.
This poll also confirms the conventional wisdom that Republican voters threw away a certain pickup of this seat. The poll asks voters to suppose that Castle had been the GOP nominee -- and in that match-up he leads Coons by a whopping 48%-33%. In addition, only 33% of respondents said that O'Donnell is qualified to be a Senator, to 60% who say she is not qualified. This compares to a 59%-27% margin for Coons, the county executive of Delaware's largest county, which contains a majority of the state's population.
The TPM Poll Average gives Coons a lead of 53.7%-39.3% against O'Donnell. And just for comparison, the average for a Castle-Coons race gives Castle a lead of 46.4%-35.4% over the Democrat.
Castle is GONE! That’s a win any way you slice it. Way to go Christine!
Fantastic idea!
No seat was thrown away. Putting a full blown liberal voter into that seat under the Republican name gains us absolutely nothing. Even if Christine loses we have still sent a nasty RINO to the glue factory forever! We already won!
the whole mice with human brains thing is nice in theory. However, I wouldn’t like to see the mouse with a head big enough to pull this off
“The poll asks voters to suppose that Castle had been the GOP nominee”
That pretty much ruined the poll asking that.
Well, it will just make the next one look all the better.
Even if they did, Castle would hardly be an improvement over the dem and would probably join with Snowe, Collins and the other "independents". If O'Donnell wins, it's a win/win. If Castle had won, it would be as much of a lose/lose as if the dem had won. Delaware is probably too blue to even bother with (but I did send a contribution to O'Donnell).
Castle isn't a Republican.
While the results are discouraging, O’Donnell’s ability to raise money in a quick time span, and the amount of time left until the election keeps me hopeful.
What I don’t understand is how “moderates” would rather vote for Marxists than Conservatives? Proves, imho, that there are no moderates, only libs who don’t have the cojones to say what they really are.
Not too surprising, after every Republican with a microphone as well as the Dems and the media have been smearing her.
Regretably, the Republican insiders would much rather lose than see someone elected who might fire their incompetent *sses.
But I think she has a good chance to turn it around, especially if the do an ad, for instance, pointing out that she was joking on a comedy show about having KNOWN people who practiced witchcraft in her highschool, but never got involved with it herself. Whereas Coons boasted about being a bearded Marxist after he graduated from college.
O’Donnell learned in high school not to dabble with silly stuff like witchcraft. Coons learned in college to be a Communist, and HE STILL IS.
She’s got a huge challenge ahead of her. People within her own party have called her a whack job (in so many words) She has to convince people that she isn’t crazy before she can convince them to vote for her.
I’m not sure there’s enough time left to do that...
If the race is about personality, she loses.
If the race is about issues, she wins.
At the moment, the race is 100% about personality. She is getting the full Palin treatement from the national media and her own party leadership.
Thankfully, this is probably as bad as it will get. 15% down means she has to make up 7.5% + 1 voters to win. Very doable considering the enthusiasm gap between the left and right.
I'd rather have the following commercial:
"What makes you think she's a witch?"
"She turned me into a newt!"
"you don't look like a gingrich ...."
Has O'Donnell started launching ads to that effect? If not, she needs to get at it.
A F***ing Marxist. An enemy of the United States is in the lead for Senate?????????????

0’Donnell is a perfectly instructive result to everyone.
Republicans learn they must be conservative to win primaries. Excellent!
Tea Partiers learn they must nominate candidates who can win. (I’m not counting 0’Donnell out, I’m just saying that we Tea Partiers need a portion of realism too.)
Democrats learn the strength of the Tea Party is not to be under-estimated, and they have to veer right.
All good!

“the whole mice with human brains thing is nice in theory. However, I wouldnt like to see the mouse with a head big enough to pull this off”
I’m not sure what would be scarier, a mouse with a head that big, or the conviction with which O’Donnell said this existed.
Wow. Deleware wants a Liberation Theology Marxist for a Senator. Amazing!
