Exposure by Free Republic Forces Huffington Post to Pull Article Threatening Glenn Beck
Monday, August 30, 2010 | Kristinn

Posted on 08/30/2010 9:12:45 AM PDT by kristinn

The Huffington Post has pulled an article published this morning targeting Glenn Beck with a $100,000 bounty after news of the threat was broken on Free Republic.

The article, titled $100,000 For Glenn Beck's Sex Tapes has been replaced with the following message:

Editor's Note: This piece was published directly to the Huffington Post by its author. It didn't meet our editorial standards and has been removed from the site.

The URL for the pulled article reflects the title: http://www.huffingtonpost.com/beau-friedlander/100000-for-glenn-becks-se_b_698724.html

The author of the threat, Beau Friedlander, is the former editor-in-chief of Air America.

Here is the text of Friedlander's call for information to destroy Beck:

It is time to pop the tea baggers' favorite balloon (so what if it will be replaced by another?), and with that in mind I hereby offer to negotiate a $100,000 payday to the person who will come forward with a sex tape or phone records or anything else that succeeds in removing Glenn Beck from the public eye forever. I am not offering the cash myself, but I will broker the deal and/or raise the money for what you bring to the table. (And it better be good.)

If you have the goods, or if you want to contribute to a slush fund to buy more takedowns (probably not tax deductible), please contact me at: glennbecksextape@gmail.com.

The Free Republic article was posted at 9:19 a.m. EDT, and was immediately picked up by several Tweeters and bloggers who used the Free Republic headline without attribution or just plain stole the article from FR.

The news about the Huffington Post threat reached critical mass when it was reported by Newsbusters.

Free Republic has proven yet again that its value in the conservative blogosphere even as FR enters its 14th year online next month.

I am offering to broker the deal. There are several ways to raise the funds ranging from an individual paying the whole thing (probably rather easy to arrange), a news agency buying it, or micro-funding through progressive blogs like Daily Kos, FireDogLake, Crooks and Liars. I am merely a catalyst here. (Make a disingenuous comment, get a concrete answer--so unlike the right wingers, eh?)

Top quality editorial control over there. Any schnuk with a login can post an official article?

HuffPost is allegedly a online newspaper, where one would expect some level of editorial control, but apparently its just a free-for-all.

It is not a blog or a forum, like FR, it's supposed to have an editorial policy and screening process.

Good job. I was wondering how long it would take before huffnstuff got busted for inciting violence. Of course it “won’t be our fault and we didn’t do it” will be the usual response that hatemongering machine.

There is a failed, boorish, elitist political neophyte in the White House. The fact that he is of partial minority heritage is more of an issue to the free-thinkers-in-lockstep of the left than to anyone else.

Too old school. This is merely an attempt at an even the playing field. What on earth do you think Rev Moon and Rupert Murdoch have been doing all these years?

And even if you eliminate Beck - you leave the argument unanswered. Tell us (please) exactly what has this government wrought that we should want more of it? I’m reminded of Nat’l Lampoons Animal house where the initiate crys out ‘thank you sir may I have another’ - 9.5 unemployment ? WACK! Housing start worst in 20 years ? WACK ! Put a victory mosque on top of American ashes ? WACK! Give trillions to banks - why SURE WACK! Pass legislation without reading it? WACK !! Health care bill to guareentee profits to the insurance industry ? WACK! - need I go on?

So you are offering $100K, yet it is money you don’t have....spending money without having any money. What a concept! I think that’s exactly what has gotten us where we are today.

“ . . . they didn’t accept African Americans in their ranks at all till 1978 . . ..”

False. If you are going to criticize something you must at least get your facts straight. African Americans have been members of the LDS Church since 1830. They were not ordained to the priesthood until 1978. If Beau already knew that, then he lied. If he did not, then he is just a bad journalist. Take your pick.

Did I really lie? Ordained to the priesthood means allowed in the temple. This comment is another childish tactic of the right. I sometimes think right wingers are simply people who never got over the trauma of some childhood bad day. I had 700 words. What I said was accurate. Explain the priesthood in seven words to prove me wrong. (And even then, BOO!) Shoo. Scram. We could sit here for a week reciting the inaccuracies and lies that right wing media actually does put out there. Tell me this, Captain Justice, did Obama study at a fundmentalist madrassa, or was that a lie put out there by Insight the magazine of the Washington Times? Also: Are you proud that the main outlet for your so-called thought is owned by Rev. Moon? (I shudder now and go)

To my knowledge no,but I would bet money he has his staff monitoring it.

Tony Snow use to say the going to FR was required show prep before his radio show.
