An ancient Chinese medicine might ease side effects of cancer treatments.
An age-old mixture of four herbs could spare patients with cancer some of the side effects of chemotherapy.
The cocktail comprises Chinese peonies, Chinese liquorice, the fruit of the Chinese date tree and flowers of the Chinese skullcap plant. In China, they call it 'Huang Qin Tang' and have used it to treat gastrointestinal problems for about 1,800 years.
A start-up pharmaceutical company called PhytoCeutica has dubbed its proprietary pill of the blend 'PHY906', and shown in early clinical trials that the mix can combat the severe diarrhoea caused by many chemotherapy drugs, which destroy fast-dividing gut cells in addition to tumour cells.
Now, researchers at PhytoCeutica and Yale University School of Medicine, both in New Haven, Connecticut, have some early leads on how PHY906 does this, despite the fact that most of its individual chemical components remain unknown.
PHY906 still needs to prove itself in larger clinical trials. In 2004, the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) eased regulations on herbal mixtures, allowing the approval of medicines that have been proved to be safe and effective, even if their individual components aren't known.
A green-tea extract produced by the German firm MediGene in Martinsried, and used against genital warts, was the first such medicine to be approved by the FDA under these rules...

I had similar results with Vit C, pantothenic acid and Vit E. It cured my Rheumatoid arthritis.

“None of the items in the Chinese formula sound like verboten herbage. Why couldnt the plants be grown in the USA, even if they need tropical climes like that of Hawaii?”
.
China isn’t tropical where the herbs are grown. What is needed is an area that gets flooded frequently, so that the soil minerals get replaced regularly.
China is good for that, as are Bangladesh and India. There is no place left in the US that has replenished ag lands, except for the central California delta.
.
I do remember that one of the herbs was a dried citrus rind of some sort. Vit C?

Ya’ know, I don’t plan on living that long, but sounds interesting nonetheless.
Modern science is amazing including the effort focused on the ‘gut’. It has conquered the unforgiving diseases that attacked my loved-ones. Serious surgery in both cases, but successful. God bless the medical profession.
I welcome this news hoping it may benefit modern protocols.
yes!!! help is there for those who can take off the blinders & do things other than the MD’s idea which is usually cortisone

Interesting. I went through a bout of massive acid reflux — and, by chance, discovered the candy Good & Plenty, which is licorace.
Soothed my stomach better than anti-acids.
My sister-in-law has had similar luck with ginger tea and ginger candy. Soothes her stomach every time!
I told my doctor it was helping me, and she prescribed Marinol. All it did was make me high but did nothing for the nausea and vomiting. Marinol is not plant extract -- it is synthetic -- and although it may be chemically similar to the active ingredient in weed, it does not do the same job.
There is something in the smoke that is not in the Marinol. And that "something" saved my life by allowing me to drink fluids and eat a little during that horrible few months.
(The chemo/rad treatment worked, btw, and I am cancer free since October.)
If anyone has a loved one suffering through chemo, forget Marinol and get your hands on some weed and a pipe.
Speaking of venereal disease.
The Center for Disease Control has issued a warning about a new virulent strain of this old disease. The disease is called Gonorrhea Lectim, and it is a terrible Obamanation.
The disease is contracted through dangerous and high risk behavior involving putting your cranium up your rectum. Many victims contracted it in 2008...but now most people, after having been infected for the past 1-2 years, are starting to realize how destructive this sickness is.
It’s sad because Gonorrhea Lectim is easily cured with a new drug just coming on the market called Votemout. You take the first dose in 2010 and the second dose in 2012 and simply don’t engage in such behavior again; otherwise, it could become permanent and eventually wipe out all life as we know it.
Several states are already on top of this, like Virginia and New Jersey, and apparently now Massachusetts, with many more seeing the writing on the wall.
Please pass this important message on to all those bright folk you really care about.
You and hundreds of other patients on chemo, radiation and other nausea inducing treatments say the same thing. Cannabis has over 60 alkaloids in it. Only two are considered to be psycho-active and only one is duplicated in Marinol which is, as you say, synthetically derived.
But it may not even be the psycho-active components that combat nausea and instill hunger. Probably but it has not been established and neither has the efficacy or non-efficacy of the other sixty plus phytochemicals.
Swallowing a pill and keeping it down until it works is also a problem for many who have extreme drug-induced nausea.
