PARIS (AP) - France has declared war on al-Qaida, and matched its fighting words with a first attack on a base camp of the terror network's North African branch, after the terror network killed a French aid worker it took hostage in April.
The declaration and attack marked a shift in strategy for France, usually discrete about its behind-the-scenes battle against terrorism.
"We are at war with al-Qaida," Prime Minister Francois Fillon said Tuesday, a day after President Nicolas Sarkozy announced the death of 78-year-old hostage Michel Germaneau.
The humanitarian worker had been abducted April 20 or 22 in Niger by al-Qaida in the Islamic Maghreb, and was later taken to Mali, officials said.
The killers will "not go unpunished," Sarkozy said in unusually strong language, given France's habit of employing quiet cooperation with its regional alliesMauritania, Mali, Niger and Algeriain which the al-Qaida franchise was spawned amid an Islamist insurgency.

Just to be clear, which France are we talking about? The French France or some other France? Like the France on this planet that continues to sell arms and technology to Iran? If it is the France I am thinking about, merci beaucoup! quel miracle !
That’s kinda what I was thinking.
“Okay, what’s the punchline?”
1) Yes,Obama would send troops.
2) Obama would intervene of the side of the French , and impose rules of engagement that would result in the demoralization of our armed forces and a high rate of death amng our soldiers.
Obama means to destroy our military and remake it into and army which fits the Fascist Utopian model.Thats the plan just like it is in Afghanistan. He has also refused to acknowledge victory in Iraq, and is ding everythinng he an there to make Iraqi democracy fail.Thats why he recently sent Joe Biden over.
Where is the “Oh $hit guy” telling us we will have to bail them out again.
We sure do a good job of rebuilding France.
He’ll send a few border patrol agents and send BP a bill for it.
Our American people are armed and that nonsense probably wouldn’t last too long. Who knows.
I know that I wouldn’t mind reaching out and touching some of them.
The French first arrived in Afghanistan in 2001.
Well, we don't use the "W" word around here.
The one President who had the guts is vilified routinely around here.
Wow- I guess the surrender is not too far off....
There....that's more fitting to the times.....
France launches overseas contingency operation against man made disaster spun by western nations toward a minority known as al-Qaida. Targets unknown, locations unknown. West acknowledges it shoot first ask later may not be best plan.
There....that’s more fitting to the times.....
Sorry to step on your line.
France surrendering jokes aside, France has had prior experience with Islamic militants in Algeria. And that being said, I hope France starts cleaning house at home.
Merde! I'm out of the picture for a few centuries and they let the place go to the dogs! I am depressed.
;-)
Seriously, this IS depressing.
Sounds just like what is transpiring in Manhattan, too.

Oh man! That IS depressing. All those people centuries ago gave their lives for nothing.... :-(
Even the French have figured it out. If you are not going to be respected then you better be feared. I hope they truly put the fear of Allah in those cultist’s turbans.
Now if our current President could just make this connection.
French fries for everyone!
Our current pResident is the connection.
