NRA response to my email about endorsing Reid.
NRA | 15 Jul 2010 | Self

Posted on 07/15/2010 1:57:20 PM PDT by Robbin

...For the record, the NRA-PVF has not yet made an endorsement in the Nevada U.S. Senate race. In fact, there have been no announced endorsements for any U.S. Senate seat for the November general elections-period....

... Admittedly, Senator Reid's record is not perfect; few politicians' records are. For a number of years (primarily in the 1990s) Sen. Reid had some problematic votes on our issue. But in the last five years, he has dramatically improved his record on our issue, so the NRA-PVF would be irresponsible if it did not give due consideration to those recent votes and actions. There is no doubt that, as Senate Majority Leader, Reid has supported efforts to protect Americans' gun rights, both by voting FOR pro-gun measures AND preventing anti-gun legislation from reaching the Senate floor.

In 2004, Sen. Reid voted against efforts to reauthorize the Clinton ban on "assault weapons" and ammunition magazines that hold more than 10 rounds, which are standard equipment for many rifles and for most modern semi-automatic pistols designed for defensive use. Early last year, he flatly stated he would oppose any effort to reinstate an "assault weapon" and magazine ban if the Senate were to vote on it in the future. In 2005, Sen. Reid was instrumental in Senate passage (and eventual enactment into law) of the "Protection of Lawful Commerce in Arms Act" (PLCAA). That law shut down reckless lawsuits against gun manufacturers and dealers, which attempted to hold them liable for the misuse of firearms by criminals. Sen. Reid also cosponsored the PLCAA in the previous Congress and voted against the Feinstein Amendment to ban "assault weapons" and "large" magazines, and the Kennedy Amendment that would have banned most hunting ammunition...

The NRA's Defense of Reid went on for several more paragraphs.

My reply from the NRA said the next in line after Reid was Chucky Schumer or another guy who was even worse on guns. I’d say if Reid and his opponent have equal pro gun views, the NRA should hold off endorsing. I am staying with the NRA as it’s the strongest pro gun lobby, but my donations may lessen with a Reid endorsement.

Has Reid ever voted “no” on a gun-grabbing SCOTUS nominee?

I sent my most recent mail back to Chris Cox asking him for an explanation. Don’t know if he’ll respond.

The only reason I’m staying with the NRA is that I have a life insurance policy that remains in effect as long as I’m still a member.

We’ll see what happens.

I’m waiting...seems like the letter to you is what is posted on the NRA website.

I too will forever abandon the NRA if they endorse Reid. That will be the end!! If they are smart, they will endorse no one.

So if the idiot Reid backs gun issues because he is from a pro-gun state and it is in his political interest to do so, and then strongly supports a supreme court nominee who would eliminate the 2nd ammendment as much as possible...you are still ok with Reid?

That is the problem with people and organizations who are single-issue...they can’t help but screw themselves.

OK, then tell reid: “Harry, if you vote against Kagan and do all you can to keep her off the Court (and do the same with the next anti-2nd Amend. nut job obama sends over) then the NRA will not endorse your opponent in this election. Otherwise, we are going to help defeat you. Deal?”

Naw, the NRA knows Harry is Hussein's boy and every S.C. judge we get under obama will be anti-gun. They also know 4 out of 9 justices just voted that the 2nd Amend. SIMPLY DOES NOT EXIST. I have no prob with an occassional kudo by the NRA to a dim who truly is pro-gun (rare as hell), but to not vigorously support the opponent of POS reid shows stupidity or arrogance. I'm done.

I'm not OK with Reid. But I'm person, not a single issue organization. But as a single issue organization, the NRA needs to be careful not to be just another partisan organization. That's not screwing themselves, it's at the core of their effectiveness. If every Democrat pol knew the NRA would oppose them no matter how they personally vote, they would have zero influence on any Democrat. That might make conservative NRA members feel good, but it would make the NRA as irrelevant as the GOA.

As for Keagan, the NRA opposes her. But in fact her confirmation won't change the balance of the court, since Stevens is just as bad.

As you say, any SCOTUS nominee by Obama will be just as anti-gun. So is that really the fight you want to go scorched earth over?

Personally I really appreciate the great job the NRA has done in preventing any gun control laws from coming out of a Democrat controlled Congress for the last three years. It ain't always pretty, but they know how to play the game to win. It's easy to be conservatively correct when your actions have no real life consequences.

I understand Free Republic endorses Charles Schumer as the next Majority Leader in Congress. If so, I’m cancelling my membership and signing onto a real conservative website.

Where we differ is that it is not ok with me that the NRA would endorse anyone who would undermine our 2nd Ammendment rights, no matter what form; and doing a shoulder shrug and looking the other way on Keagan because the immediate balance of power in the Court will “apparently” not be affected is poor policy for the NRA.

Politics is a rough game and the NRA had better consider the results to their membership numbers if they endorse Reid...Reid is an anti-American, anti-freedom and liberty SOB and the NRA had better carefully consider membership outrage should they decide to endorse Reid.

There is only the NRA and the Second Amendment Foundation. All the others are not lobbying groups or don't do anything.

The goa asked for the narrow view on Heller and in their brief for McDonald, they had to mention the NRA nine times. Mentioning the NRA makes them irrelevant. They are a family owned t-shirt company.

Jam it NRA, I'm through with you. Reid, the defeatist and anti-American spoke out against the troops WHILE OUR SON WAS IN COMBAT in Iraq. I would call that treasonous but apparently the NRA has no scruples, but I've managed to hang on to them.

Adios pendejos.

P>He's Baaaack... it’s ‘ole 2.5, the GOA hating NRA member…

Here is a thread where you spewed your typical, and not very enlightened rant, without listening to a word someone else says… Typical 2.5 whining rant about the GOA.

and here you are in another thread and using your typical whining rant with me… 2.5 gets the real facts and then gets caught in a couple of, well let’s say... factual distortions.

And yet again, after being confronted with facts defeating your position you continue to defend the indefensible.

So after getting your butt severely kicked to the curb many times, you continue to resort to distortions, twisting everyone’s words and in some cases; out right lying about your actions in an attempt to defend your pitifully weak bias.

Even so, I tried to reach out over a year after you told your usual fibs and help you see the error of your non-question, but you again went back to your old ways of unfairly attacking fellow 2A groups.

When you finally see your stands falling apart, you then stoop to a new low and start personally attacking people that disagree with your thoughts in the debate…2.5 attacks fellow FReepers that are engaged in the 2A discussion, and if that wasn’t bad enough, YOU ATTACKED THE WRONG PERSON! and again a couple of days later in another thread you again personally attacked a fellow FReepers… 2.5 again attacks fellow FReepers that are engaged in a 2A discussion.

Many people have answered your questions and countered your stands in-numerous times… you just refuse to see it. Point is, if you can’t have an honest debate fighting a common enemy, then do everyone else a favor… stay on the sidelines and argue with yourself, don’t try to distort the focus of this fight.

Every 2A group, no matter what you may think of them should be WELCOMED to the struggle we are facing, many former NRA members, myself included, who definitely have no love for the NRA leadership have been going back into the group because the stakes are so high, don’t let your petty bias cloud the big picture.

AOV sends with warmest regards.

> Their pat excuse seems to be that the NRA is a SINGLE ISSUE organization

This is where the NRA has lost its way. It seems to think that the 2nd Amendment exists in a vacuum ... it does NOT. The 1st and 2nd Amendments are forever intertwined -- you cannot protect one at the expense of the other, because the end result will be the loss of both.
