The House voted 270-153 to restore benefits for more than 1 million people whose payments ran out in early June. The measure would extend the federal long-term jobless aid program through November and retroactively restore benefits to eligible people.
But the Senate has rejected several attempts to extend jobless benefits amid worries about record budget deficits, and it is not scheduled to address the issue again until mid-July.

Was this the “keeping unemployment high” act?
I guess it’s good to know that if I loss my job that I won’t have to look for another one for at least 2 years.
Will the GOP in the Senate stand their ground in the face of media stories about starving families and homeless children, all caused by the heartless Republicans? I suspect they won’t.
Me too, since mine ends 8/2011!
Is your house paid off?
No, but I just refinanced so I have a very manageable monthly payment. I also have no other debt, cars and credit cards are all paid off.
I would think the unemployment is a drop in the bucket of spending. The Republicans can find something else to cut. This is not good politically. Why give the Dems an issue on a silver platter? I am not debating whether or not the federal government should be paying this. I am simply stating a fact of political life.
Sooner or later you have to cut people off. 99 weeks? are you kidding me?
The Pub Senate has to make a stand someday. Maybe this will be that stand
BTW: I’m on unemployment. Luckily, I have money to tide me over ... for now
Without this, people are getting cut off a lot sooner than 99 weeks.
No reason to look for a job if you can do it with benefits. Have the summer off with pay.
I hope you find something soon....
Just a thought but instead of handing out unemployment checks why not try doing something to help create jobs?
Unemployment is still at 10% (higher in real life, of course). I have never drawn unemployment and I hope I never have to. If I had to find a new job, it would be very difficult because of my age. Of course, I hear stories about how employers can’t find people to work because they rather get unemployment benefits. I suppose some would, but I believe the majority of people prefer to have real jobs. I guess they can’t all be census takers, though. Just my humble opinion.
I pray that I find a job soon - but I have faith that I will and I’m treating it like a full-time job - FINDING my new job. Extending benefits doesn’t make anyone get off their arse to get to work!
I'm looking and don't get any benefits at all. None. Never have. Every week I wonder how I am going to pay anything. Luckily I have some family helping out. Beats sleeping on an army cot in the salvation army (which I did once..it aint comfy). And if I did get benefits I would still spend just as much time looking. I don't know where this crazy idea originated that conservatives who get benefits will refuse to look for employment. Insanity.
According to Nancy, this IS a jobs bill....

Pelosi: Unemployment Checks Best Way to Create Jobs

Unemployment compensation isn’t very much money, and you have to file continual reports of job-hunting efforts. Almost anyone would prefer a job.
That said, what about college graduates who can’t find their first job? They aren’t helped at all by unemployment compensation.
The only good idea is to cut both taxes and government spending drastically, and thereby encourage more hiring. The last President to quickly end a depression with that approach was the much-maligned Warren Harding in 1921.
