I have been monitoring the live feed of the "Top Kill" apparatus from BP.com and after about three hours there is a definite change of events down there.
For the first couple of hours we could see several views of a very complex device rocking around in clear water.
Now there is gushing of what I presume is the "mud" plumeing.
We may get some incite as to progress soon.
Can any of the experts here post what time they will begin to feel optimistic that this strategy is going to work?
BP has said that it will be about 24 hours, if I ‘member right. So, that would be 2 PM approximately tomorrow afternoon. (What time was Obama going to take questions from the press again?)
I am hoping I can set my alarm for the wee hours of the morning, and see some positive reports here. Wrong?

Anyway, on the radio at the top of the hour, a BP spokesman said they were currently pleased with current state of the operation -- but could make no assurances as yet whether it would work as hoped.

0bama will take a question or two approximately 4 minutes after it is announced that he sucessfully plugged the hole. Then he will need to rest and recuperate from all his toil so the questions will end.
You'd have to be able to clamp that hose onto the pipe in such a way that no oil escaped through the connecting point. It would be worse than having a loose garden hose connection.
I’m no expert, but it has certainly worked before, it’s also not that big a leak into a huge body of water with a lot of dispersant (detergent) involved. I love FR but some of you all need to get off the sensationalism of the while event. It will be contained and most likely with minimal damage to the environment. Then we need to tap it again, with proper oversight. This is a huge pool of oil under very high pressure, and we need it!

You are entitled to your opinion. Many others would find fault with it, however.
From what I understand, they need to push the oil far down the hole. They are pumping some outrageous volume of mud down the hole to push the oil deeper down the well. Like 55 gallons every few seconds. I think that is causing the increased flow from the broken riser seen on the video. Eventually they flow of mud will be changed to to fast setting cement. Pray that the cement can withstand the pressure and set. If so, well is plugged.
Can you provide me with some sort of detail as to where I am wrong? Which part of my statement? If not, go take a valium. Sleep tight, the Gulf will be fine.

I said I wasn’t in a mood to argue.
You post some supporting details that the gulf will be fine, that the marshes and spawning grounds won’t be destroyed, and that those lakes of oil under the surface, and therefore not visible to the eye won’t completely ruin the coastlines.
And, post some comforting information about how the dispersants used are totally harmless to sea life and humans. Maybe those going out on some of the vessels are silly to be wearing protective gear. Send your nonsense to them, and tell them to take valium.
This is an event not seen before. BP is doing everything they can I’m sure and I am grateful for their drawings to explain what they need to do. If this fails the Gulf will not start recovery until it is stopped. Let’s all pray this works. Until then lets respect this catastrophe for what it is.
