"Day Without a Mexican" Seen as Protesting Arizona Law
WOAI ^ | 5/13/10 | Jim Forsyth

Today is 'A Day Without a Mexican,' as designated by Chambers of Commerce in northern Mexico as a response to the tough illegal immigration law in Arizona.

The chambers are encouraging people across several northern Mexico states not to enter the United states today to shop or to do business, and to withhold their patronage from any U.S. companies.

The name is a reference to the 2004 movie of the same name which portrays Mexican Americans withholding their labor in the US.

Ramiro Cavazos, President of the San Antonio Hispanic Chamber of Commerce, says he understands the frustrations of Mexicans and Mexican Americans.

"The only way we're going to see the impact that these types of bad laws have is to point out the economic impact along the border," Cavazos said.

As much as 90% of the economies of Texas border communities is based on trade with Mexico. Today's one day protest is seen as symbolic, but Cavazos says it points out how interrelated our economies are.

"I respect their decision and I think it shows that this is an economic issue and not an immigration issue," he said.

San Antonio's Mayor later today is expected to demonstrate the city's opposition to the Arizona law, but San Antonio is not expected to go as far as some major cities like Los Angeles and boycott Arizona companies.

That movie is a bad example. Most of the Mexicans mentioned were already here legally. If THEY left yes Cali would be in trouble but if only illegal aliens who were mexican or otherwise left then it would save money.

So, will the illegal Mexicans that are already here, leave for the day?

Will be nice, I'm sure. If for no other reason that you can be more certain that all of the other drivers on the road with you are insured.

People who think it’s economically necessary to rely upon a cheap labor force sound to me like people who said long ago that America would collapse without slavery. Know what? We have an entire world of cheap, cheap labor from which to benefit. We don’t particularly need Mexicans. Especially with 20% or whatever unemployment. The laws of supply and demand will take care of everything. Labor supply goes down, prices go up, and the jobs will be filled. We can partly take the cost out of the benefits we were paying.

Just a question -

what are MEXICANS

doing in the United States of America?

If they come here to work and live,
they should come here to be AMERICANS.

Just one day? Bummer.

Maybe we can talk them into extending it a little. A century would be about right.

I fully concur with this "Day Without a Mexican."

To show our support, we need to close all of our emergency rooms, doctors offices, and ambulance services to them. Then we need to "turn off" their EBT cards and have them find elswhere to live than their taxpayer funded housing.

Of course any illegals that are arrested today should also be denied a lawyer or the ability to seek their consulate until at least tomorrow. HMMMMMMMM...... any other suggestions?

Oh yeah, any Mexican citizen attempting to cross into America should be denied. Likewise any Mexican Nationals flying into an American airport should be detained for a minimum 24 hours.

Please Mexico really TRULY show us what it would be like without your parasites for a day. If we don't learn our lesson you can "punish" us permanately.

This will only work if we stop all the bilingual education and welfare to illegals.

They did this in Atlanta a few years ago, backfired as usual. The citizens of the state were thrilled and guess what? The state did not grind to a stop!!

I hire a kid from my church who has his own lawn service.
Just as I try to patronize within the Christian community for as much of my business as possible.
