'Tension, I Think, is Gone,' Elie Wiesel Says of U.S. and Israel

Following a private lunch with President Obama, Holocaust survivor and Nobel Peace Prize Laureate Elie Wiesel said he believes tensions are gone between the United States and Israel.

“There were moments of tension, but tension I think is gone,” Wiesel said from the White House driveway, “Which is good. And relations between Israel and the United States have a history. And that history is has always been one of understanding and productive and they are now I think good.”

Since Vice President Biden's visit to the region in March was overshadowed by Israel’s announcement for new settlements in the occupied territory of East Jerusalem, relations have seemed strained. And President Obama’s private meeting with Israeli rime Minister Netanyahu later than month did little to quell the tension.

During his lunch today with Mr. Obama in the Private Dining Room of the White House, Wiesel said they discussed the peace process and the recent settlement construction in Jerusalem but refused to provide specifics of their discussion.

Elie apparently had one too many, during lunch. Or, he's suffering from early-onset dementia.

Yep, it is amazing that he would say this based on whatever words Obama said rather than actions.

Well 0 does a great job of convincing whomever he is meeting with AT THE TIME as being with them. This is one of his key “skills” that got him all of those brain-dead endorsements.

Besides, on what authority does Elie Wiesel speak? No political authority.

Was that before or after Obama said that it wouldn’t do anything about Iran having nukes until Israel got rid of theirs today?

He’s a serious leftist. This causes symptoms similar to dementia.

My take is the ‘bammer’s afraid of Bibi. And he should be.

All of Ellie Weisel’s Charity money is also gone, thanks to Bernie Madoff. . Ellie’s best days are behind him, I’m afraid.

So, a lunch is all it takes for Eli to stick his head in the sand and ignore the painfully obvious?

You’re easily bought, old man.

Wiesel once criticized a television miniseries on the Holocaust because he said that “it reduced the entire thing to comic book level”. I agreed with him but now I'm afraid Wiesel is reducing himself to comic book level.

"You’re easily bought, old man."

See the previous post. After Madoff got through with him, maybe all it takes now is a cheap lunch.

Did Obama apologize for this?

“U.S. officials slam pro-Israel Jerusalem ad”

United States administration officials have voiced harsh criticism over advertisements in favor of Israel’s position on Jerusalem that appeared in the U.S. press with Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s encouragement. The authors of the most recent such advertisements were president of the World Jewish Congress Ronald Lauder and Nobel Peace Prize laureate Elie Wiesel. “All these advertisements are not a wise move,” one senior American official told Haaretz.

In the advertisement, Wiesel said that for him as a Jew, “Jerusalem is above politics,” and that “it is mentioned more than 600 times in Scripture - and not a single time in the Koran.” Wiesel called to postpone discussion on Jerusalem until a later date, when there is an atmosphere of security allowing Israeli and Palestinian communities to find ways to live in peace.

The ongoing confrontation with the U.S. administration over construction in East Jerusalem was present in many of the comments made by senior Israeli officials during Independence Day. Advertisement

Netanyahu himself said in an interview to ABC that freezing construction in the east of the city was an impossible demand, and refused to answer questions on the Israeli response to demands from Washington. Instead, he called on Palestinian Authority chairman Mahmoud Abbas to return to the negotiating table without preconditions.

DO NOT click on the Haaretz link on this thread. Something funky happening when you try to exit out of it.
