Polish president dies in air crash
A plane carrying Lech Kaczynski, the Polish president, has crashed near Smolensk airport in western Russia, killing all on board, Russian officials have reported.
Polish officials confirmed on Saturday that Kaczynski was on board the flight with his wife, as well as Slawomir Skrzypek, the president of Poland's central bank, Andrzej Kremer, the deputy foreign minister and the army chief of staff.
The crash occurred about 1.5km from Smolensk airport in foggy conditions.
If the aircraft had headed toward the runway and had crashed into the ground on attempt one, I would be a lot more leery of foul play than I am here.
The aircraft reportedly made four attempts prior to the fifth and fatal one. If there had been an attempt on the aircraft, any of those four would have sufficed. And yet, it would seem those seeking to do harm to the aircraft waited until the fifth attempt if we’re to believe foul play was involved.
Good pilots or not, I think the record is going to show that these pilots were too concerned with the security issues surrounding a diversion, than the security involved with landing blind.
We’ll see. Whatever happened, it’s a real tragedy. I can only imagine how sad the Polish people must be today.
This is TERRIBLE, terrible, terrible news. All 8 of my great-grandparents came to the US from Poland. All of my genealogy lists are in solemn prayer for the country. Keep Obama far away from this disaster.
I wonder if agreeing to deploy the US missle defense system had anything to do with this?
Our deepest sympathies for your loss. May God be with the people of Poland.
And I just read on another thread the entire Polish General staff died as well.. I mean pretty much all the leaders of the Polish military... it’s bad.. very bad.
Our heartfelt condolences go out to the people of Poland. God bless them. We’ll keep them in our prayers.
This sounds like a Polish version of Tom Clancy’s ‘Executive Orders’, only real. I pray for Poland. Hopefully this will not get even worse.

Almost in tears here, but have a lot of questions about this... I hope there is nothing to suggest this was anything other than a HORRIBLE accident.
Heartfelt prayers for all of Poland, and all Poles everywhere today who are mourning this tragic loss - most especially all those who were personally close to the President, and all the others who were on that flight. May God comfort them in their time of mourning...
I don’t like the feeling I’m getting from this... Granted, I just heard (for once it was my daughters who broke this news to me, and I didn’t see it here first...), and haven’t been able to read a lot about it so far...
Lizol, I know people are in mourning right now, but what is the mood there — are the Polish people accepting this as an accident, or are they questioning due to where and how this happened?
I just heard of this horrible tragedy a short while ago when I turned on my PC. I am speechless.
Why, oh WHY were so many important top officials on the same flight like that??? And on their way to Russia no less? I know the Cold War, and Communist occupation of Poland has been over for a long time, but I personally do not trust Putin, and given that Poland stuck up for Georgia and such — well, hindsight is always 20/20 but I don’t think I would have had everyone on the same plane like that — too high-value of a target.
My condolences to the people of Poland.
This is a terrible tragedy.
Prayers for Poland.
I am too. Just terribly sad and praying for Poland.
Now that just makes me even more *curious* FOUR TIMES and were told fly somewhere else??? This does NOT sound good, Lizol.
I am praying for all of Poland at this sorrowful time. May they all rest in the Peace of Christ.
