Would You Vote For An Atheist For President, If You Agreed With His Policies?
pinochet

Last year, I met with a former congressional aide, who said that there were several closeted atheists in Congress. To run for public office in America, it is almost a requirement that people publicly proclaim their religious affiliation, irrespective of whether they believe or not. Would you vote for a self-proclaimed atheist?

I don’t know. I have a friend who is atheist, but he is conservative on the vital issues and he is intelligent. He is an independent, not affiliated with the Dems or the Republicans, but I think most FReepers would like him. Unfortunately, he will not run for office. He did once back in Indiana where he’s from, but an issue was made of his atheism and in the Christian conservative town he lived in, that was a big no-no. Obviously, he lost, and the experience burned him enough that he never wants to run for anything again.

Oh and I didnt mention — this guy’s moral character is far more superior to the elitists in Washington we have now.

“If said politician is athiest, I don’t agree with his policies.”

Hit the nail on the head: an atheist, by definition, cannot have the same values as a religious person (in my case, Christian); therefore, I couldn’t support one in a position of leadership. At its core, every decision stems from the ingrained values of the decider.

Thanks for your service.

If he or she was willing to govern according to the limits set forth by the Constitution then yes.

Bush was a believer and look what damage he did. Jimmy Carter was a believer in some form as were numerous other piss poor Presidents.

What we do know about Obama is that nothing he says can be trusted, including what he might say about his beliefs. Whoever or whatever he is, he’ll never admit it because he’s a pathological liar.

But in answer to your question—no. In my opinion, atheists lack a moral center, and are not fit to lead a country founded on Christian principles. Look at the countries we know were headed by atheists, and then ask yourself if that’s how you want our country to be.

My hubby claims to be a non-believer but has no qualms with Christian values. He says it is our culture & doesn’t want it changed. He is strongly pro-life & is a good man.

Someone who is not a follower of faith cannot be trusted?

How we doing after 8 years of “Born Again Bushie”?

It has nothing to do with lumping people together - it is simply whether or not our leaders are saved, and are blessed by god. I prefer to have a president who knows god’s grace, than one who is going it alone.

Would people here vote for a modern day Thomas Jefferson or Ben Franklin? I wouldn't vote for a Thomas Paine! But Jefferson or Franklin? Heck yes!

Neither were men of any faith much beyond that of Deism.

And I don't think the modern electorate would be that friendly to the religious beliefs of either men.

Atheist or Agnostic? If they don’t follow any religion but also don’t hate any then yes, but if they are atheist and dislike religion in general then no.

If I agreed with his/her policies I would vote for them. I would much rather have a honest atheist than a politician that wears their religion on their sleeves for the sake of votes.

As a conservative atheist myself, I think William F. Buckley said it best:

"Can one be a conservative and not believe in God? Of course. Can one be a conservative and hate the idea of belief in God? Of course not."

The only Christians I truly have a problem with are those who occasionally post on FR to the effect that atheist or agnostic conservatives are some sort of liberal fifth column and somehow dangerous to conservatism.

Obama’s mother, Stanley, was raised as a Unitarian....at a Church in Wash state renowned for its communist sympathies.

She proclaimed herself (I read somewhere) an atheist in college (i.e. at Obama’s birth)—and I believe I recall didn’t have much to with any religious practice after that.

Modern Unitarianism really has no creed or set beliefs (except for a rejection of Christianity) and one can be anything from an atheist to a polytheist and yet be accepted as a Unitarian.

Various associates of Obama’s Unitarian grandparents who raised him were Marxists...(who usually are atheists...)including the sexual pervert Frank Marshall Davis who apparently mentored Obama as an adolescent.

We don’t like being painted as terrorist but it seems you’re doing a pretty good job of painting those with whom you do not agree. There are sinners every where. Look at the character of the candidate. Just sayin’....

No, an agnostic does not KNOW if there is a God.

An atheist says there IS no God to believe in and could care less what you believe in or do.

Marxist/communists are anti-theistic and are bent on keeping themselves in power and are AGAINST the possibility that there is a power higher than the government. To them, a belief in a God is something that must be crushed.

My state (West Virginia) is chock full of Christians whose faith I believe is sincere. They are staunchly pro-life, pro-military, pro-God in the schools.

Yet they elect socialist Democrats, year after year, unable to resist the siren song of that gubmint cheese.

Are their values more, or less, in line with yours than those of an atheist conservative??

Conservative atheists have respect for Christianity

Yep, conservative deists as well. ...like a few of our Founders. And all have respect for our Judeo-Christian heritage. Plenty of them around these parts. If qualified, I'd vote for any of them without qualms.
