Up to a third of breast cancer cases in Western countries could be avoided if women ate less and exercised more, researchers at a breast cancer conference said Thursday.
While better treatments, early diagnosis and mammogram screenings have dramatically slowed the disease, experts said the focus should now shift to changing behaviors like diet and physical activity.

That’s already starting to happen - if you don’t do what you are told by the HMO, you will be paying more and more of the bills for any medical care you get.
I found this article interesting in that the percent of deaths due to breast cancer were the same for European women and American women (21%). This compares annual deaths to newly diagnosed cases. Shouldn’t that universal health care over there in Europe have better results????
<we really attributed it to stress. I dont know if its a factor,
I have a friend who was diagnosed last year. She doesn’t drink, smoke, and is mostly vegetarian (but didn’t watch the fat content, which I think is important). Personally, I think stress was the trigger for her. We are both pre-tenure professors. It’s stressful just for me to listen to what she has to deal with at her organization. Unfortunately, she doesn’t seem to let up - and her org discouraged her from taking a semester off to deal with her treatments and to rest. They didn’t say ‘no,’ but they made it uncomfortable for her to say ‘yes.’ She’s OK now, but I hope she doesn’t have a relapse due to the stress.
I know stress must be a factor. My wife cannot handle stress at all, and used to work in a stressful job. Thank God she is retired now.
Exactly!!
Yes, my wife cares nothing for the pink ribbon movement/Susan Komen crap, etc.
She was much too young. I am so sorry for your loss. ((hugs))
I think she was right....so sorry for your loss!
My doc (Dr Wright of Tahoma Clinic) uses a ratio of certain estrogens he tests for to help prevent breast cancer....he believes it is hormone related....and the Pill is hormones, and probably giving too much of the wrong kind of estrogen to women....causing the problem. He calls it the EQ ratio I think...yeah..here’s the article....

I am so sorry.
have your friend read the article in my post 27...
If a mammogram can find a tumor, then it hasn’t been “prevented.”
Why do you dismiss studies such as this?

My wife, a breast cancer survivor, is convinced her cancer was caused by early and heavy HRT. She has the hormone reactive cancer cells.
Several studies have shown, as Puppage has said, that 30 minute brisk walks 5x a week drops a women’s recurrance rate by over 30%.
I can proudly say that we walk our tails off briskly! I want to keep this wonderful woman around for a long time!

I swear I only clicked the POST button once.
The next step will be to control what women eat and how much the exersize. Any woman who does not meet the standards will be excluded from the insurance exchanges.
After all, we need to cut the cost of medical care!
The camel is in the tent, and he's eating your lunch!
Excessive estrogen is doing more damage for women and men than we realize.
Funny, but before this, most of the prominent public figures to come down with early breast cancer seem to be fit and bony babes, like Sheryl Crow, Christina Applegate, etc
