About 600 GM dealerships are getting a second life. Of the 1,160 dealers who appealed orders to shut down as part of bankruptcy proceedings, approximately half will be allowed to stay open. But one dealer tells the Detroit News that it's no cause for celebration until the conditions are made clear, possibly as soon as today.
"They could make it cost-prohibitive or they could set conditions like they need 30-year site control of our properties, which is what Chrysler is doing," she said. "It should be as simple as if the dealerships are viable and sustainable, they should be reinstated."

I’m sure they had to pay the appropriate “license reissuance fee.”
It won’t bring me on their any of their lots. I will not buy from Government Motors. I’m buying another Ford Escape, if anything.
Get this; I resurrected an old Jeep Cherokee that sat for 5 years. I couldn't get it to hold an idle so I dropped it off at the dealer. Of course they fixed the problem, a bad throttle position sensor, but they also did their free inspection.
They came back and said I needed a new exhaust system. From exhaust manifold to the tailpipe. I knew the exhaust manifold was cracked, most do on the Cherokees sooner or later, and I thought the cat may be bad.
Well the price they quoted me on the exhaust was $2,000!!!!!!! The catalytic converter alone was priced at $1050.00! I told the guy I just priced out a cat online for $150 and that it would probably be quite a cold day in hell before I let them do the exhaust work :-)
In a perhaps-not-unrelated move, universal catalytic converters, and those that are model specific but not ‘certified’ by the state are now illegal in California; residents of that state must now pay the dealer prices for their catcons as they no longer have a choice.
And guess which cars need cats more often than others.
Anyone know where I can get a list of the restored dealerships?
This wouldn’t have anything to do with the birther allegations in the lawsuit, would they?
I just replaced the ABS speed sensor on my 1999 Ford Ranger, Pard was under $20 and took all of 15 minutes to do the job. Could have done it in 10 minutes if I had done it before. Don’t know how much a dealer would have charged.
I just bought a new car last week. Preface this with I hate shopping for a new car, especially because I am a woman.
My old salesman from Saturn has kept in touch with me, despite the brand going out of business. I finally relented knowing they would have used cars available.
To my surprise and happiness he was able to pull from the full dealership group (which is not GM products) to get me into a brand new 2010 Nissan. Over the course of negotiations, I don’t think there is any love loss between dealers and GM.
I also kept in mind that both GM had offered me $2000 off a new car and Ford offered me $4,000 off both prior to negotiations.
GM isn’t free and clear and may not survive the government takeover. It seems many of my Saturn service people and salespeople have moved on to better things.
That doesn't surprise me. Best thing Californians can do is ride those people out on a rail.

I would think that if they priced their work more competitively they'd bring in more business. They also wanted over $400 to replace my A/C-Heater blower motor. I found the part online for $35.00 then my son and I did it in under an hour.
How will CARB find out what type od cat you have? Are repair shops required to turn you in?
If I drive to Oregon or Nevada and get a new exhaust do I have to take it off when the nazi dealership reports me to the Gestapo?
Exactly. The Donofrio suit representing a slew of Chrysler dealers (and all Republicans I seem to recall)who were put out of business by GM when it was taken over, and who then sued. This suit attached a notice pointing to the fact that Obummer couldn’t take over ownership of GM unless and until he proved eligibility for his office(and iffy even then) is supposed to go back to court yet again this coming Monday, Mar 8, I believe. This may be a move to attempt to make this case moot, as was done when that National Guard Officer who was being activated for service in Iraq, questioned the legitimacy of Obummer’s presidency and they just cancelled his orders and released him from service (after getting on the phone and getting his boss to fire him if the boss wanted to keep his government contracts, which he did). What a corrupt administration!!!

They can catch it on a visual inspection - the ‘authorized’ units are stamped to indicate such.
And yes, they can force you to remove it and fit an ‘authorized’ one, purchased at a dealership.
And yes, as I understand it, repair shops are now required to turn you in or face hefty fines themselves.
Oh, I forgot to mention - as of last year, all service facilities in the state of CA are required to check and ‘adjust’ your tire pressure on your car if they so much as touch it. Guess who gets stuck with the bill for this ‘service’.

I worked at a couple of dealerships in college as a title clerk so I saw all of the sales contracts on both new and used cars. I also had some responsibility for the accounts receivable on warranty claims. Believe me, dealerships make their money on parts and service, not on sales of vehicles.
That’s the Chrysler dealerships.
GM and Chrysler have long been dead in my house and among my family.
