The National Weather Service Pacific Tsunami Warning Center has issued a tsunami warning for Hawaii and a tsunami advisory for the West Coast of the United States.
A NWS spokesman on CNN says it is estimated the tsunami waves will be 10 to 15 feet high when they hit Hawaii. The tsunmi waves could last up to six hours.
Recent buoy reports of wave heights vary from 5 to 16 feet.

BULLETIN
TSUNAMI MESSAGE NUMBER 7
NWS PACIFIC TSUNAMI WARNING CENTER EWA BEACH HI
148 AM HST SAT FEB 27 2010
TO - CIVIL DEFENSE IN THE STATE OF HAWAII
SUBJECT - TSUNAMI WARNING SUPPLEMENT
A TSUNAMI WARNING CONTINUES IN EFFECT FOR THE STATE OF HAWAII.
SNIP
EVALUATION
A TSUNAMI HAS BEEN GENERATED THAT COULD CAUSE DAMAGE ALONG COASTLINES OF ALL ISLANDS IN THE STATE OF HAWAII. URGENT ACTION SHOULD BE TAKEN TO PROTECT LIVES AND PROPERTY.
A TSUNAMI IS A SERIES OF LONG OCEAN WAVES. EACH INDIVIDUAL WAVE CREST CAN LAST 5 TO 15 MINUTES OR MORE AND EXTENSIVELY FLOOD COASTAL AREAS. THE DANGER CAN CONTINUE FOR MANY HOURS AFTER THE INITIAL WAVE AS SUBSEQUENT WAVES ARRIVE. TSUNAMI WAVE HEIGHTS CANNOT BE PREDICTED AND THE FIRST WAVE MAY NOT BE THE LARGEST. TSUNAMI WAVES EFFICIENTLY WRAP AROUND ISLANDS. ALL SHORES ARE AT RISK NO MATTER WHICH DIRECTION THEY FACE. THE TROUGH OF A TSUNAMI WAVE MAY TEMPORARILY EXPOSE THE SEAFLOOR BUT THE AREA WILL QUICKLY FLOOD AGAIN. EXTREMELY STRONG AND UNUSUAL NEARSHORE CURRENTS CAN ACCOMPANY A TSUNAMI. DEBRIS PICKED UP AND CARRIED BY A TSUNAMI AMPLIFIES ITS DESTRUCTIVE POWER. SIMULTANEOUS HIGH TIDES OR HIGH SURF CAN SIGNIFICANTLY INCREASE THE TSUNAMI HAZARD.
THE ESTIMATED ARRIVAL TIME IN HAWAII OF THE FIRST TSUNAMI WAVE IS
1119 AM HST SAT 27 FEB 2010
The NWS has also issued a tsunami warning for most of the Pacific region:

Here is a local report on the West Coast tsunami advisory:
A tsunami advisory has been issued for the California coast, including Del Norte County, following a massive 8.8-magnitude earthquake that struck off the central coast of Chile at 10:34 p.m. PST Friday.
The forecasted arrival time for Crescent City is 1:46 p.m. PST Saturday, however tsunamis can be dangerous for many hours after arrival, and the initial wave is not necessarily the largest, the West Coast and Alaska Tsunami Warning Center says.
THIS BULLETIN APPLIES TO AREAS WITHIN AND BORDERING THE PACIFIC OCEAN AND ADJACENT SEAS...EXCEPT ALASKA...BRITISH COLUMBIA... WASHINGTON...OREGON AND CALIFORNIA.

The main resort areas on Maui, i.e., Kaanapali and Wailea, are right on the beach.
If it were a catastrophic tsunami, we could be looking at immense damage across the Pacific basin...that would be a situation for sure that would change the world in a moment.
We live at the beach and today is our town huge yearly seafood/wine fest.
THousands come in and camp/hotel to come and party at the event that sits right on the mouth of the bay/ocean in the Tsunamizone.
I had to tell riders they have to sit in a seat IOW no standing on the bus to get to/fro the event yesterday (they want to pack in the bus like a sardines/not safe)
Well hell if the sirens go off today I guess that rule of seat occupy only will be nill we will stuff em and get em to high ground.
We transported some really gratefull for the ride (other than the big ole school bus full of young party goers) older couples so hope to have them as repeats today.
I am going to take the black berry with so I will check in to FR (our local emerg folks will all be at the Wine fest volenteering) to keep us updated and so if we need to about our transport mission and head to high ground aka Home.
I beleive you are RIGHT.
While I have not done the research you have done for your book ... what you state makes sense and the evidence is in the headlines. Keep us posted on what else you have learned.
The west coast is just waking up, its a saturday morning, its almost a full moon, and there are some warnings of increased wave heights all up the coast, myself I’m not being Chicken Little but in some places there could very well be some form of damage, especially in unprotected marinas.
I am watching Hawaii real close and for any increase of tectonic or even volcanic activity up here in Alaska, what happens in Japan and S. America usually happens here.
here is hopes people in Hawaii take this seriously.
The tsunami that hit Hilo hard and killed over 40 people was a 9.1 and that was also from Chile. This one was 8.8 and that is big. I'm only seven feet above sea level so am sure I will be evacuated. I have a place to go and not too far away above the danger zone so may be off the computer for several hours soon. Things are really buzzing here on Maui right now. Aloha
WKMB is interviewing an astrophysicist with NOAA, who’s saying Japan will be hit hard due to the focusing effect. He SEEMS to be saying Japan will probably be hit harder than Hawaii.
How can he use the tsunami to pass his healthcare crap, that is what he is deciding on....
The DH and I are booked into the Kea Lani next Saturday.
Sorry, that’s the Pacific Tsunami Warning Center he works for.
Mr. Paul Carusoe???
Is Hawaii 4 hours different from east coast time....I always mess that up...thanks
Aloha in case you still are there, be careful!

Lots of homeless people live on the beaches around Honolulu...

If Obama mentions Hawaii as being his birth place, we’ll all know he’s really reaching now.
