The National Weather Service Pacific Tsunami Warning Center has issued a tsunami warning for Hawaii and a tsunami advisory for the West Coast of the United States.
A NWS spokesman on CNN says it is estimated the tsunami waves will be 10 to 15 feet high when they hit Hawaii. The tsunmi waves could last up to six hours.
Recent buoy reports of wave heights vary from 5 to 16 feet.
Latest statement on Hawaii:
BULLETIN
TSUNAMI MESSAGE NUMBER 7
NWS PACIFIC TSUNAMI WARNING CENTER EWA BEACH HI
148 AM HST SAT FEB 27 2010
TO - CIVIL DEFENSE IN THE STATE OF HAWAII
SUBJECT - TSUNAMI WARNING SUPPLEMENT
A TSUNAMI WARNING CONTINUES IN EFFECT FOR THE STATE OF HAWAII.
SNIP
EVALUATION
A TSUNAMI HAS BEEN GENERATED THAT COULD CAUSE DAMAGE ALONG COASTLINES OF ALL ISLANDS IN THE STATE OF HAWAII. URGENT ACTION SHOULD BE TAKEN TO PROTECT LIVES AND PROPERTY.
A TSUNAMI IS A SERIES OF LONG OCEAN WAVES. EACH INDIVIDUAL WAVE CREST CAN LAST 5 TO 15 MINUTES OR MORE AND EXTENSIVELY FLOOD COASTAL AREAS. THE DANGER CAN CONTINUE FOR MANY HOURS AFTER THE INITIAL WAVE AS SUBSEQUENT WAVES ARRIVE. TSUNAMI WAVE HEIGHTS CANNOT BE PREDICTED AND THE FIRST WAVE MAY NOT BE THE LARGEST. TSUNAMI WAVES EFFICIENTLY WRAP AROUND ISLANDS. ALL SHORES ARE AT RISK NO MATTER WHICH DIRECTION THEY FACE. THE TROUGH OF A TSUNAMI WAVE MAY TEMPORARILY EXPOSE THE SEAFLOOR BUT THE AREA WILL QUICKLY FLOOD AGAIN. EXTREMELY STRONG AND UNUSUAL NEARSHORE CURRENTS CAN ACCOMPANY A TSUNAMI. DEBRIS PICKED UP AND CARRIED BY A TSUNAMI AMPLIFIES ITS DESTRUCTIVE POWER. SIMULTANEOUS HIGH TIDES OR HIGH SURF CAN SIGNIFICANTLY INCREASE THE TSUNAMI HAZARD.
THE ESTIMATED ARRIVAL TIME IN HAWAII OF THE FIRST TSUNAMI WAVE IS
1119 AM HST SAT 27 FEB 2010
The NWS has also issued a tsunami warning for most of the Pacific region:

News is just coming in now.
“Juan Fernandez Island was covered by a giant wave and two buildings collapsed.”

MSNBC reporting Talco, Chile was “Inundated by a large wave”
They are also reporting “Huge Wave” in the Juan Fernandez Islands.
Good luck brother, don’t delay too long for gathering possessions. Hawaii is pretty liberal. We can’t afford to lose you!!! :)

THAT, sir, was EVIL......
All a result of anthropogenic increases in carbon dioxide in the atmosphere.
Its disturbing anyway, I am monitoring the live feed of Global Earthquakes right now, where I am in Alaska is at the northern part of the Ring of Fire, Japan was hit last week and I have seen a 300% increase of small quakes locally here.
The real worry? My cats have gone ballistic, climbing the walls and are now hiding, I kid thee not, I mean it friend.
That’s a biggy....
Imagine what that can translate to in a bay like Hilo? Or a sloped beach like EWA?
Is that on top of the normal waves? Or the total height?
Thanks for the ping.
Prayers UP! for Big Look, all his kith and kin and everyone else in that AO.
Any info on wave arrival time vs high tide for HI?
That’s differential at SEA LEVEL.
The Buoy center is reporting Wave lengths as long as 88 MINUTES.
Can you imagine how much water is in that?
Wonder if this has anything to do with the Massive Earthquakes in the last 2 days....
OH, SNAP! The ‘Great Magnetic Filament’ on the sun that we’ve been tracking for the past week finally erupted yesterday.
Solar and Heliospheric Observatory (SOHO) images bracket the eruption between 0719 UT and 1919 UT on Feb. 24th.
The event did not produce a bright solar flare, as sometimes happens when filaments erupt, but there was a coronal mass ejection (CME).
SOHO coronagraphs observed at least one and possibly as many as three clouds billowing away from the sun: movie. If any of this material is heading for Earth—a big unknown!—it would arrive on Feb. 27th or 28th.
Arctic sky watchers should be alert for auroras on those dates.
Oh yeah,,, im gonna put my arm around her husband and tell him,, “Look,,if she is kinda suspicious of almost everything you say, it’s sorta my fault,,,”
I’ve joked gullible right out of her,,
REALLY???
Um...question to ALL Alaskan FReepers: If you have pets, what are they doing now?
Not a good day to go to Hanauma Bay.

I don’t understand these two paragraphs. One mentions Crescent City and then there’s the exception of Alaska, BC, WA, OR and CA. Help???
Just heard that the Chile 8.8 eartquake now has a 175 death count. The quake was on the Nasca Plate/South American Plate slip/fault line with the Nasca Plate moving under the South American Plate. This was near the town of Maule about 200 miles south of Santiago. It was between the epicenter of two very major Chile earthquakes of the 20th Century.
