(WXYZ) - The FBI is confirming raids at the offices of three Michigan auto suppliers who do work for Toyota.

Search warrants were served Tuesday evening at Yazaki North America, DENSO International and Tokai Rika. Yazaki sells electronic components and DENSO makes accelerator pedals.

Denso has released the following statement about the situation "DENSO International America, Inc. (DIAM), U.S. subsidiary of DENSO Corporation, was inspected on February 23, 2010 by the U.S. Federal Bureau of Investigation and the U.S. Department of Justice in regard to U.S. antitrust laws. DIAM is cooperating with this investigation."

Welcome to FR!

My 2001 Camry-CE (bought new) has close to 270,000 miles, and it is still is going strong! (No major repairs on it.)

My wife’s 2003 Sable had a major oil leak the day we drove it home from the dealers, so much for Ford’s QC!

Yes, browniexyz, that's what started to screw it up. But the mainline US papers would not report it out of protecting Obongo, and the Japanese papers would not report it out of concern to protect The Emperor who had clearly been embarrassed. The Japanese Imperial Household Agency even contacted the pool photographers in an effort to have them pull some unflattering angles of that rather humorous if not oafish, irritating encounter here in Tokyo last autumn by none Other than the "Internationally Savvy One".

But there were plenty of whispers and murmers all around town about how Obama blew it and also lack of trust in him OR his "snoring/daydreaming/napping" EOP/NSC team with him here in Japan (no kidding!!).

Sheesh. Somebody needs to read DALE CARNEGIE.

You and I may have been taught in drivers ed how to handle a runaway car — I know I was, in high school driver’s ed. That included, in not the last resort, turning the ignition key off. The last resorts after that were throwing the automatic transmission into PARK, and then into REVERSE, the last with the intent of blowing the transmission out. And the final resort was a planned crash.

Well, in some cars, in a panic situation, turning the key causes a person to turn and pull it out in automatic learned reaction, and can lock the steering wheel. Depends on the car. And as cars become more and more fly by wire — the shifter is not directly mechanically linked to the gearing in the transmission — there are electronic and hydraulic logic intermediaries.

The solution, I think, is to include that which race car drivers have as standard — a battery or ignition circuit interrupter, a kill switch, located in a place a driver can reach it, but is not at all likely to be accidentally thrown.

Thanks AiT for the detailed response. Still, it doesn’t make sense to me. If you look at the Dunham’s in Hawaii in the 1960’s and 1970’s you see a lot of red Japanese in their inner circle. Maybe there’s some event in Barry’s live as yet unreported related to some personal rejection by Japanese ex-pats.

Just like CBS did on Audi, and ABC did on Toyota, NBC hired some quack involved with plaintiff trial lawyers to rig a test. In this case, it was a crash test of a pickup with rocket motors strapped to the gas tank. NBC lied and said the truck had been scrapped. GM hired an investigator who tracked the truck down, with rockets still strapped to it. GM sued NBC for defamation and pulled its advertising. NBC read a a long, on-air apology.

And now you know why the news media has always run down GM.

I had not heard that story. Thanks for telling me. NBC, once a great broadcasting company, produces nothing but partisan, yellow journalism. They are despicable, and it’s sickening that other media closed ranks behind them and blackballed GM, not that I care about GM now. Their caving in to the UAW several years ago sealed their fate and lost my respect. They, too, were once a great company.

Haven't check yet, but I think the Toyotas have a black box that can be downloaded. If so, it would be interesting to see the results. That is if any of them from some of the vehicles in question are still available. I'm betting that we are as others have said simple cases of driver errors. But in our society, we can't ever admit to a personal responsibility issue can we?

“... it was a crash test of a pickup with rocket motors strapped to the gas tank...”

No, not quite right.

The truck was stationary and a Estes like rocket motor was buried in the dirt below the trucks side mounted gas tank. A car was remotely driven into the side of the truck.

In slow motion video you could clearly see the rocket engine ignite - flames shooting upward from the ground.
