Obama aims to ax moon mission
Orlando Sentinel ^ | Wednesday, January 27, 2010

NASA's plans to return astronauts to the moon are dead. So are the rockets being designed to take them there — that is, if President Barack Obama gets his way.

When the White House releases his budget proposal Monday, there will be no money for the Constellation program that was supposed to return humans to the moon by 2020. The troubled and expensive Ares I rocket that was to replace the space shuttle to ferry humans to space will be gone, along with money for its bigger brother, the Ares V cargo rocket that was to launch the fuel and supplies needed to take humans back to the moon.

There will be no lunar landers, no moon bases, no Constellation program at all.

In their place, according to White House insiders, agency officials, industry executives and congressional sources familiar with Obama's long-awaited plans for the space agency, NASA will look at developing a new "heavy-lift" rocket that one day will take humans and robots to explore beyond low Earth orbit. But that day will be years — possibly even a decade or more — away.

In the meantime, the White House will direct NASA to concentrate on Earth-science projects — principally, researching and monitoring climate change — and on a new technology research and development program that will one day make human exploration of asteroids and the inner solar system possible.

There will also be funding for private companies to develop capsules and rockets that can be used as space taxis to take astronauts on fixed-price contracts to and from the International Space Station — a major change in the way the agency has done business for the past 50 years...

“Ad to appear in major Chinese newspapers:

WANTED: Someone with money and vision to assume possession of the former U.S. Mission to the Moon Project. Project comes complete with solid, experienced workforce. Payment of relocation expenses for workforce is requested.”

Equipment for sale cheap - high bids will begin at $.05 on the US dollar. Military equipment sale to follow shortly.

“Yep. No dem voters on the moon, after all.”

That’s because they prefer to stand in welfare lines waiting for free handouts, and actually working - with sweat and all - revolts them.

Maybe someone like Dick Rutan can change things

Thats what I am hoping, that private enterprise will fill, somewhat, the hole left by this.

“And this is exactly why zer0 is cutting the program.”

But, but didn’t he promise to “restore science to its rightful place”?/s

“The moon actually is of military importance, especially if you look at how the 21st century is shaping up. The moon is beyond the range of any existing terrestrial anti-satellite weapons, but a railgun or linear accelerator on the moon has a practically unlimited ammunition supply and can hit any spot on the planet Earth.”

The Chinese, Russians, Indians and Japanese know this fact. US citizens and their so-called political leaders are not interested because it would cost too much, and besides a US miltiary outpost on the moon would be contrary to their ideals and conflict with the coming fire sale of US military equipment.

Obots would rather follw than lead, and submission to the Chinese and Islmists will assage their shop-worn consciences.

Yes he did and in his eyes the rightful place of science is in subservience to The 0ne's political agenda. :0/

Color me surprised. Most of us here already knew what Obama was going to do to the space program. “It’s too White”

They helped elect Sen. Bill Nelson who supports the marxist who is destroying America. Nelson is big on global warming and Gore. He is NASA’s boy in DC.

Americans allowed illegals to flood and which has bankrupted the country and FL.

NASA funding should be a static 1% of our total expenditures. That way the only way they can cut NASA is by cutting other programs like Welfare first.

Well Thank God NASA isn’t in your backyard, right?

It is in my backyard. I live in the Houston area. I hope it does not shut down, at least during this recession depression. I'm just saying no government agency should be justified just because people have jobs in the agency. It's not like it's a private company taking its chances like any other company. It is a taxpayer-funded government agency. If it can find something useful to do, so be it. But going to the moon to plant another flag is IMO a waste of money. Again, I do not want to see money taken from NASA so that Zero can spend on Global Warming BS.

BTW, thanks for defining my opinion as my opinion.

Don’t worry they have $8 billion to start on high speed rail, which will likely cost 3 times as much as require constant subsidies.

You left out one more:

$#@!
