In September 1971 I left my home in New Jersey to enter active duty in the Army at Fort Gordon, Georgia. I had gone through ROTC at Drexel, had been commissioned a second lieutenant and was at Gordon at the Signal Officer’s Basic Course. In December, I headed for Fort Lewis, Washington, to my duty assignment.

I arrived just in time for the infamous Christmas Blizzard of 1971. Puget Sound winters are rainy; on occasion it does snow, but usually not all that much. This time we got 18 inches.

Upon arriving at group headquarters, I was told to report to base housing to get my room at the bachelor officers’ quarters. But I was also told not to bother reporting back until after New Years to get my actual assignment. There are a variety of Christmas and New Years activities for officers within their units, but thanks to a don’t-give-a-damn attitude on the part of headquarters, I was frozen out.

I had managed to prepare for the coming blizzard by shopping at a supermarket in Lakewood and getting some cans of soup. I stopped at Colonel Sanders and got a bucket of chicken. I stopped a liquor store and got a bottle of Jack Daniels. Then I hunkered down in my room while it started to snow.

Fort Lewis was paralyzed. Even the officers’ club was closed, and one could traditionally rely on that for some form of Christmas cheer. I was stuck in the BOQ with my soup, cold chicken and whiskey for Christmas. This was my first Christmas away from home, and I was less than happy. A number of other junior officers were there, all watching football on TV in a desultory manner, while a few cooked their excuses for Christmas dinner.

One good thing came out of this. Six months later, we got a new CO, and after hearing about my experience, he created a policy where people were assigned immediately upon arrival and were also assigned a fellow officer to show them around. No one else had to go through this again.

How sweet of you.

Does Jake accept her?

What does Minette think?

How kind of you to provide a home for an older dog.
