Framing the message: why Democrats struggle to get their points out (Yes, he's serious)
The Examiner ^ | December 12, 2009 | Michael Czerniewski

Posted on 12/12/2009 8:44:45 PM PST by 2ndDivisionVet

It's a fair question in politics: "Why do Democrats struggle to get their message out while Republicans have made it an art form?"

Republicans have been getting their messages out there effectively since 1994, when the Gingrich Revolution swung Congress into Republican hands. Even after fifteen years, eight of which included the worst Presidency ever, the GOP still has little difficulty getting their talking points across.

Even after Republican agenda items - tax cuts for the wealthy to stimulate the economy, all-war-all-the-time foreign policy, concentrating on wedge issues like a woman's right to choose and the right for gays to marry - have been completely debunked, why do they have no problem getting their message out?

Kansas State Representative Mike Slattery (D-24th District) may have an answer for that: it's because the Republicans use emotion to get their message out, whereas Democrats use intellectual reasoning. While what Democrats propose makes absolute sense, they struggle to find a way that will appeal to the average citizen because it lacks an emotional component.

Case in point: in the recent debate over health care reform, Republicans got their message out with soundbites ranging from "pull the plug on Grandma" courtesy of Senator Chuck Grassley (R-Iowa) to former Alaska Governor Sarah Palin's "death panels." Democrats have consistently struggled to debunk these catchy, emotionally loaded, and entirely non-factual phrases.

Democrats have to find a way to better frame their arguments if they want to get their points across and win elections. George Lakoff, a progressive linguistics professor at the University of California at Berkeley, suggested that instead of appealing to fear - the Republicans' emotion of choice - Democrats and progressives need to appeal to emotions of security and protection. Lakoff also wants Democrats to avoid GOP framings like "partial birth abortion" and "tax relief," suggesting instead that the terms "women's reproductive rights" and "investment" be used, respectively.

In short, it's time for Democrats to find their own framing, one that appeals to safety rather than fear, and get their message out.

99.9% of the media constantly trumpets their talking points, but that's not enough? LOL

He’s envious of conservatives for actually making sense.

While what Democrats propose makes absolute sense

Methinks the problem may be the authors perception of reality.

Liberals are statist morons advocating idiocy to idiots. Watch CNN for five minutes. They shout and howl their stupid cliches and only prevail because no one challenges them. Their political correctness, their global warming, their smugness and arrogance are a mile wide and a half inch thick.

Yep, Democrats are just too intellectual and have too many nuances in their positions. Obama and company just can’t communicate with all of us who cling to guns and religion.

Sounds like they are saying that the Democrats use their superior reasoning ability to develop their positions, whereas Republicans deal with emotions.

>>99.9% of the media constantly trumpets their talking points<<

And 100% of what democrats say is emotion, NOT reason.

Their “problem” is they have completely succeeded in getting their message out — loudly, accurately and succinctly.

And America is in the process of saying NO!

I see this in the ground wars. Average Joe Conservative versus Average Dumb Jack Ass Rat.

More and more I am beginning to see conservatives winning the debates—not only winning, but slaughtering people.

When you’re opponent is FOUNDED ON LIES AND BS it’s not that difficult to look like a political genius.

And he says that Republican agenda items include “all war all the time” foreign policy? How overly simplistic and “knee jerk” reactions can they have????

And why does he say that on abortion and homosexual marriage, that these agenda items have been debunked? Debunked by whom? Superior liberal intelligence as they evaluate the issues? Public opinion polls consistently show that Americans are divided but lean against abortion on demand as espoused by Roe vs. Wade. And in November, Maine voters made their state the 31st state to vote down homosexual marriage. While opinion is fluid on the concept of civil union/domestic partner type laws, there is still solid opinion against full fledged homosexual marriage.

So how can this guy honestly say that certain agenda items are debunked? Debunked according to whom, just the liberals???????

The party of “hope” and “change” needs to be even less intellectual and more emotion-driven? Is that even possible?

eight of which included the worst Presidency ever

Worst presidencies ever don't normally include a reelected Chief Executive.

LBJ lasted five years, (Only one election victory in 1964 via the Kennedy sympathy vote.) Carter lasted four years. GWB was elected twice simply because the alternatives were incredibly dangerous. Unfortunately, McCain was so antithetical to conservative principles that a racist, Muslim anti-American was able to usurp the office of president of The United States.

Obama may not last three years IMHO.

By golly, I think he’s got it! Assbackwards that is. Why, we are sooo emotional that we completely dominate fields like theater and cinema, rock and roll, hair stylists, interior decorators and anything that smacks of emotion.

That scumbag Lakoff has been peddling that nonsense for how long now?

Yes, by “framing” something as something that it’s DEFINITELY NOT (partial birth abortion IS partial birth abortion or Dilation and extraction—it is, at best, a PART of reproductive ‘choice’ and health.) “Tax relief” is literally what it is—it’s not the State’s wealth. Taxes are not INVESTMENT, they are coerced monies looted from the citizenry, an investment is a voluntary allocation of funds in return for some expected benefit.

Actually, it only FEELS like he's been in there eight years. In reality it's been less than one.

Even beyond that. Who exactly is pushing gay marriage as an issue? A decade ago the concept was unknown anywhere in the country; Republicans certainly wouldn’t be opposing legally recognized gay marriage if the left was not busily trying to institute it. If it’s a wedge issue, they’re the ones with sledgehammer in hand.

It's a fair question in politics: "Why do Democrats struggle to get their message out while Republicans have made it an art form?"

The answer could smack this simple p.o.s. Czerniewski in the face and he still wouldn't get it: the answer is that it is EASY to tell the TRUTH, whereas LIES always end up being stuttering and stammering incoherencies. Walter Scott offered the same answer, though more eloquently, long ago: "O, what a tangled web we weave when first we practise to deceive!"

Really, how hard is it to figure this out?

Here's the problem right here --

While what Democrats propose makes absolute sense, they struggle to find a way that will appeal to the average citizen because it lacks an emotional component.

Nothing they propose makes sense. Communism/socialism never has made sense, never has worked, and everyone but the most brainwashed communists/socialists understand that. That the ignoramus state representative and this writer fail to understand the fact is indicative of the depth of their marxist delusion.

Conservatism is logical.

Liberalism is emotional.

So if you want to express an idea, Conservatism can do it.

Liberals just emote.
