Twelve people have been killed and 31 wounded in a shooting spree at a Texas military base by what officials believe was possibly carried out by an Army officer.
The suspected gunman was identified by ABC News as Major Malik Nadal Hasan.
The shooter was killed and two other suspects, who are also soldiers, have been apprehended, Lt. Gen. Robert W. Cone said.
The gunman used two handguns, Cone said. He wasn't sure if the shooter reloaded the weapons during the attack.

Homeland chief warns against anti-Muslim backlash
AP
Published: 15:21 November 8, 2009
Abu Dhabi:
SNIPPET: Napolitano said her agency is working with state and local groups to try to deflect any anti-Muslim anger after the Thursday attacks by Army Maj. Nidal Malik Hasan, a Muslim who reportedly expressed growing dismay over the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan. The shootings left 13 people dead and 29 wounded.
This was an individual who does not, obviously, represent the Muslim faith, she said after meeting with a group of women university students.”

“CAIR-San Antonio Video: Muslims Worry About Backlash”
Video Description - Quote:

Brian New / KENS 5, November 6, 2009
When he heard the news of the massacre at Ft. Hood, Solomon Hamideh’s reaction was no different than most.
“Everyone is disgusted,” said Hamideh, President of the San Antonio Islamic Center. “I don’t know an intellectual person that sees the killings and stuff and does not react to it with anger and disgust.”
Hamideh said every Muslim he’s talked with feels the same.
“Our feeling is exactly the same as what any normal person would feel,” said Sarwat Husain, President of the San Antonio chapter of the Council of American-Islamic Relations.
However, Husain said because the of suspect’s name and because of what he wore, many in the San Antonio Muslim community are worried about backlash.
“Somebody will take a swing at somebody, definitely that can happen,” said Husain

“Survivors Say Fort Hood Gunman Shot the Wounded Again”
By EMILY FRIEDMAN and SARAH NETTER
Nov. 7, 2009
SNIPPET: “Survivors of the Fort Hood massacre described today how Major Nidal Malik Hasan allegedly gunned down unarmed soldiers, and then shot them again as they lay wounded on the floor.”
SNIPPET: “Bono told “Good Morning America” today that she initially thought the scene of Hasan standing up, praising Allah and starting to fire was a drill. She didn’t believe it was real even when she felt her own blood, she said.”
Page 2:
http://www.abcnews.go.com/GMA/fort-hood-shooter-maj-nidal-malik-hasan-shot/Story?id=9018559&page=2
SNIPPET: “In his weekly address today, President Obama said the fact that U.S. soldiers were targeted made the attack was particularly heinous.”
Page 3:

SNIPPET: “An Army official confirmed that Hasan would have been deployed to Afghanistan later this month. Sources told ABC News that this would have been his first deployment.”
The stunner: Maj. Nidal Malik Hasan, a devout Muslim who reportedly made references to “Allah” during his shooting massacre at Fort Hood, apparently did not list a religious preference in his military personnel records.

I tell you I didn’t understand the no religious preference/not listing a preference at first, but then after reading some articles I found that this was not uncommon — not to say that’s it’s done a lot, because I did not find that in my research.
I’m assuming people of faith (various) can choose this option for their own reasons.
A military person would have to verify that.
My suspicious nature tells me that some may want to fly under the radar by not listing a preference.
OPINION - SPECULATION:
I agree.
I knew you would. ;-)

“Alleged Fort Hood Shooter Frequented Local Strip Club”
Sunday, November 08, 2009
By Jana Winter
Killeen, Texas
SNIPPET: “Maj. Nidal Malik Hasan came into the Starz strip club not far from the base at least three times in the past month, the club’s general manager, Matthew Jones, told FoxNews.com. Army investigators building their case against Hasan plan to interview Jones soon.
“The last time he was here, I remember checking his military ID at the door, and he paid his $15 cover and stayed for six or seven hours,” Jones, 37, said.”
SNIPPET: “”He asked us why we were working at the strip club, if we liked the lifestyle, if we had any kids,” she said. “It was right before Halloween so he asked what our kids were dressing up as. He just wanted to know a lot about us.”
Jenner said she asked Hasan why he liked coming to Starz instead of another of the roughly half a dozen other clubs nearby, all about an 8-minute drive from the Army base.
“I like it here because no one I work with is here,” she said Hasan replied.”

Does Mohamed Atta sound like a “devout Muslim” who would be driven to commit the incredible act of violence witnessed on 9/11 just because he hated the Western lifestyle so much? He likes the drugs, strip clubs and white girls a little more than most devout America-hating Muslims.

Its more appropriate to say he is a brave hero that sacrificed his life for a more noble cause. Scholars have paralled this to suicide bombers whose intention, by sacrificing their lives, is to help save Muslims by killing enemy soldiers. If one suicide bomber can kill 100 enemy soldiers because they were caught off guard that would be considered a strategic victory. Their intention is not to die because of some despair. The same can be said for the Kamikazees in Japan. They died (via crashing their planes into ships) to kill the enemies for the homeland. At Fort Hood, a graduation ceremony held under seige -
Austin American Statesman ^ | Monday, November 09, 2009 | Denise Gamino

Graduation ceremony goes forward while gunfire rages outside.
The college graduation ceremony Thursday in a Fort Hood auditorium next to the site of the mass shooting was less about pomp and more about circumstance.
At the back of the stage, a table held 134 diplomas for bachelor’s, master’s and doctoral degrees.
At the front of the stage, a man lay bleeding as military graduates in black gowns and mortarboards kneeled to give first aid.
A floodlit American flag stretched across the entire rear wall of the stage, a huge patriotic backdrop to an emergency drama that was never supposed to play in Howze Theater.
As the pop-pop-pop of gunfire continued outside, faculty members of 26 colleges represented at Fort Hood’s annual graduation ceremony went to doorways.
“Get in! Get in!” they shouted to bystanders, waving arms draped in academic robes to pull them indoors to safety.

Home Briefing Room Speeches & Remarks
The White House
Office of the Press Secretary
For Immediate Release November 06, 2009
“Remarks by the President in the Rose Garden”
11:33 A.M. EST
SNIPPET: “THE PRESIDENT: Good morning. I want to begin by offering an update on the tragedy that took place yesterday at Fort Hood.
This morning I met with FBI Director Mueller and the relevant agencies to discuss their ongoing investigation into what caused one individual to turn his gun on fellow servicemen and women. We don’t know all the answers yet and I would caution against jumping to conclusions until we have all the facts.
What we do know is that there are families, friends and an entire nation grieving right now for the valiant men and women who came under attack yesterday in one of the worst mass shootings ever to take place on an American military base. So from now until Veterans Day I’ve ordered the flags at the White House and other federal buildings to be flown at half-staff. This is a modest tribute to those who lost their lives even as many were preparing to risk their lives for their country. And it’s also recognition of the men and women who put their lives on the line everyday to protect our safety and uphold our values. We honor their service, we stand in awe of their sacrifice, and we pray for the safety of those who fight and for the families of those who have fallen. And as we continue to learn more about what happened at Fort Hood, this administration will continue to provide you updates in the coming days and weeks.”

Lieutenant Colonel Allen B West (US Army, Ret) Statement on Fort Hood Shooting.
Lt Col. Allen West ^ | 11/08/09 | Lt. Col Allen West (US Army, Ret)
Posted on November 8, 2009 6:30:17 PM PST by Brytani
Tragedy at Ft Hood Lieutenant Colonel Allen B West (US Army, Ret)
This past Thursday 13 American Soldiers were killed and another 30 wounded at a horrific mass shooting at US Army installation, Ft Hood Texas. As I watched in horror and then anger I recalled my two years of final service in the Army as a Battalion Commander at Ft Hood, 2002-2004.
My wife and two daughters were stunned at the incident having lived on the post in family housing.
A military installation, whether it is Army, Navy, Air Force, Marine, or Coast Guard, is supposed to be a safe sanctuary for our Warriors and their families. It is intended to provide a home whereby our Band of Brothers and Sisters can find solace and bond beyond just the foxhole but as family units.
A military installation is supposed to be a place where our Warriors train for war, to serve and protect our Nation.
On Thursday, 5 November 2009 Ft Hood became a part of the battlefield in the war against Islamic totalitarianism and state sponsored terrorism.
There may be those who feel threatened by my words and would even recommend they not be uttered. To those individuals I say step aside because now is not the time for cowardice. Our Country has become so paralyzed by political correctness that we have allowed a vile and determined enemy to breach what should be the safest place in America, an Army post.
We have become so politically correct that our media is more concerned about the stress of the shooter, Major Nidal Malik Hasan. The misplaced benevolence intending to portray him as a victim is despicable. The fact that there are some who have now created an entire new classification called; pre-virtual vicarious Post Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) is unconscionable.
This is not a man caused disaster. It is what it is, an Islamic jihadist attack.
We have seen this before in 2003 when a SGT Hasan of the 101st Airborne Division (Air Assault) threw hand grenades and opened fire into his Commanding Officers tent in Kuwait. We have seen the foiled attempt of Albanian Muslims who sought to attack Ft Dix, NJ. Recently we saw a young convert to Islam named Carlos Bledsoe travel to Yemen, receive terrorist training, and return to gun down two US Soldiers at a Little Rock, Arkansas Army recruiting station. We thwarted another Islamic terrorist plot in North Carolina which had US Marine Corps Base, Quantico as a target.
What have we done with all these prevalent trends? Nothing.
What we see are recalcitrant leaders who are refusing to confront the issue, Islamic terrorist infiltration into America, and possibly further into our Armed Services. Instead we have a multiculturalism and diversity syndrome on steroids.
Major Hasan should have never been transferred to Ft Hood, matter of fact he should have been Chaptered from the Army. His previous statements, poor evaluation reports, and the fact that the FBI had him under investigation for jihadist website posting should have been proof positive.
However, what we have is a typical liberal approach to find a victim, not the 13 and 30 Soldiers and Civilian, but rather the poor shooter. A shooter who we are told was a great American, who loved the Army and serving his Nation and the Council on American Islamic Relations (CAIR) stating that his actions had nothing to do with religious belief.
We know that Major Hasan deliberately planned this episode; he did give away his possessions. He stood atop a table in the confined space of the Soldier Readiness Center shouting Allahu Akhbar, same chant as the 9-11 terrorists and those we fight against overseas in the Iraq and Afghanistan theaters of operation.
No one in leadership seems willing to sound the alarm for the American people; they are therefore complicit in any future attacks. Our Congress should suspend the insidious action to vote on a preposterous and unconstitutional healthcare bill and resolve the issue of protecting the American people.
The recent incidents in Dearborn Michigan, Boston Massachusetts, Dallas Texas, and Chicago Illinois should bear witness to the fact that we have an Islamic terrorism issue in America. And dont have CAIR call me and try to issue a vanilla press statement; they are an illegitimate terrorist associated organization which should be disbanded.
We have Saudi Arabia funding close to 80% of the mosques in the United States, one right here in South Florida, Pompano Beach. Are we building churches and synagogues in Saudi Arabia? Are Kaffirs and Infidels allowed travel to Mecca?
So much for peaceful coexistence.
Saudi Arabia is sponsoring radical Imams who enter into our prisons and convert young men into a virulent Wahabbist ideology .one resulting in four individuals wanting to destroy synagogues in New York with plastic explosives. Thank God the explosives were dummy. They are sponsoring textbooks which present Islamic centric revisionist history in our schools.
We must recognize that there is an urgent need to separate the theo-political radical Islamic ideology out of our American society. We must begin to demand surveillance of suspected Imams and mosques that are spreading hate and preaching the overthrow of our Constitutional Republic that speech is not protected under First Amendment, it is sedition and if done by an American treason.
There should not be some 30 Islamic terrorist training camps in America that has nothing to do with First Amendment, Freedom of Religion. The Saudis are not our friends and any American political figure who believes such is delusional.
When tolerance becomes a one way street it certainly leads to cultural suicide. We are on that street. Liberals cannot be trusted to defend our Republic, because their sympathies obviously lie with their perceived victim, Major Nidal Malik Hasan.
I make no apologies for these words, and anyone angered by them, please, go to Ft Hood and look into the eyes of the real victims. The tragedy at Ft Hood Texas did not have to happen. Consider now the feelings of those there and on every military installation in the world. Consider the feelings of the Warriors deployed into combat zones who now are concerned that their loved ones at home are in a combat zone.
Ft Hood suffered an Islamic jihadist attack, stop the denial, and realize a simple point.
The reality of your enemy must become your own.
Steadfast and Loyal, Lieutenant Colonel Allen B West (US Army, Ret)

Mom of soldier says Fort Hood doctor Nidal Malik Hasan scared her
NY Daily News ^ | 11/9/2009 | Joanna Molloy
Posted on November 9, 2009 4:36:29 AM PST by Saije
He was supposed to help her hero son - but all she saw in Maj. Nidal Malik Hasan’s eyes was evil.
The mom of a soldier who received psychiatric treatment from the accused Fort Hood gunman said she was frightened of the psychiatrist from the very beginning of her son’s stay at Walter Reed Medical Center.
“I looked into his eyes, and he scared me,” Cindy Gagnier told the Daily News. “He made some comments to me that made me feel very uncomfortable, and I don’t become uncomfortable very easily.”
The New York-born mother of four was at her son Christian’s bedside constantly after he suffered a traumatic brain injury in 2005 while fighting in Iraq.
The young veteran, who also is dealing with posttraumatic stress disorder, spent 18 months at Walter Reed, where Hasan spent six years on staff.
“[Hasan] said to me one time, ‘They all need to come home,’” Gagnier recalled. “He said all the boys should come home.
“He was very blunt. He was very controlled,” she said.
Hasan started his medical internship at Walter Reed in 2003 at the age of 33.
Gagnier virtually lived at Walter Reed during a difficult stretch of her oldest son’s care.
During that time, she recalls Hasan as “not very empathetic.”
“[Hasan] said it was all right for my son to leave the hospital, but it wasn’t,” Gagnier said.
She was so focused on getting Christian better that Gagnier, now a tireless advocate for other disabled Iraq and Afghan war veterans, did not make a formal complaint.
“Other doctors came to my side and helped me,” Gagnier attests. “I was very watchful over my son.”

I am curious if you know anything about a military chaplain who's surname is Shabazz -- evidentally, he was interviewed by Larry King, probably on Thursday night.
I didn't see the interview, but was told that army chaplain Shabazz explained to Larry King that he had counselled Dr. Hasan, this army psychiatrist --- AND that he'd also counselled the 101st Airborne soldier who'd tossed a grenade into the officers' tent in Kuwait in 2003 -- and that young soldier also has the surname, Hasan.
Does any of this sound familiar?
Thank you.

“US Army sergeant Hasan Karim Akbar” was the person who fragged Army Captain Christopher Seifert and Air Force Major Gregory Stone on 23 March 2003. Fourteen other soldiers were also wounded in the incident.
The sentence of death, affirmed by the commander of the 18th Airborne Corps,[3] is due to be heard[when?] by the Army Court of Criminal Appeals under an automatic appeal.

It appears that the name Hasan is a first name not the last, unless naming convention in middle east is different.
