Social Upheaval, How Close Are We?
Politics / Social Issues

Many authors who have contributed to The Market Oracle have expressed concern - some overtly and some in passing - about the possibility of social upheavals in the US caused by economic dislocations and what impact these events would have on the markets.
How close are we?
An excellent synopsis by Mr Andre Damon of the current status of economic conditions extant in the US and the world on the eve of the G20 conference contains a prescient conclusion: "These different factors set the stage for the inevitable eruption of open social conflict." Having written elsewhere this same conclusion and finding it raised by political writers both on the Left and Right using identical economic and social data and yardsticks, I firmly believe that open conflict MAY BE UPON US and needs only a small (or large, I believe) catalyst to erupt. Hopefully, this won't occur.
Regrettably, the American far-right has hijacked both the minds of workers who would otherwise galvanize behind self-defensive and pro-social agendas, and of Republican moderates and centrists; while the Democrats, Progressives and Left-leaners remain mesmerized and paralyzed in a residual stupor of Obamania (frozen in denial).
President Barrack Obama serves the purpose (knowingly or unknowingly) of neutralizing the center- to left-coalitions whereby the Bush agenda would and did continue without dissent; his administration, however, now is being drowned by assaults from the far-right (paraphrasing Berlin mayor Klaus Wowereit's comments about the NPD) who are "daring to do things that endanger our democracy".
Many of these agenda-setters (along with gunners at Obama rallies) are seeking majority rule in 2010 when they should be sought for aiding and abetting insurrection and endangering the life of a President.
Republican moderates and centrists did not stop this momentum, but instead allowed extremists to control their party and vie for future control of America in what seems a "by any means possible" manner. These are critical times for this Democracy.

Primers are again readily available for $35.00/mWhere you seeing that?
The only primers I can find are "small pistol" and shotshell, and shotshell primers have been readily available all along.
Large Pistol, Small Rifle and Large Rifle primers are still "plentiful as hen's teeth".

I never once read where Jesus told the Jews to do anything to throw off the shackels of Rome, to get civically minded, instead he said to obey the rulers (and that was when Israel was ruled by tyrants). I have seen many people confuse the conservative movement as God’s purpose, one comment in fact was striking though I am sure the person didn’t mean what he actually said if he would sit down and really think about it. God is in control, and you might be fighting against Him, whose to say loosing our Freedom is not God’s will? He often chastises those he loves. No, I’m not going to worry about frankly, God didn’t put us on this planet to vote for Conservatives or Republicans, let them have thier earthly planet and pleasures, there are higher things, like hiding His word in your heart, knowing He is God, teaching your children those things. The Republic? Not so much ...

9/12 Tea Party in DC: hundreds of thousands of the "Far Right" attend, peaceful, no arrests.
G20 in Pittsburgh: a couple hundred "Far Left" attend, teargas, riot police, property damage, dozens arrested

Our country has become Windows Vista, which is everything you just described! LOL
Heck, even Vista ain't as bad as the country is now, but, yes, I think we need a reformat or at the very least, uninstalling a lot of government, clean up the registry and defrag the hard drive.

I think youre right. None of the Wolverines here on FR will do jack when the New Order is complete, because no one is willing to do what it takes to stop it. Standing up to the New Order in any meaningful way means getting wacoed and no one here on FR has the guts to take it as far as the Branch Davidians did.
My strategy now is to stay alive until the system collapses on its own and it will. Even the Soviet Union eventually caved. I intend to build my family into a fortress of Christianity and Reason and outlast the bastards. When it all comes crashing down I or my descendants will emerge from the rubble and play their parts in the great Reconstruction of the West.
Well, I remember I keep hearing the old quote from noted libertarian writer, Claire Wolfe, "it's too late to work within the system but it is too early to shoot the bastards" for what it's worth. I think you do have a point, a huge rise up would require a lot of coordination, you would need at least a few hundred thousand actives out there and they will have to be able to "cash any checks they write." A few isolated groups ain't going to do that, like you said, you'd end up with some Wacos.
Still I think we all need to prepare ourselves to physically be able to defend ourselves at least. Like you, whatever happens, I do pray to God that I make it to the other side and be part of the rebuilding, whatever that would take.

In Red Dawn, the Wolverines werent looking for a fight. They didnt ASK for their enemies to take over and start shooting. But when they did, the Wolverines responded in kind. I think some of us, deep inside, retain that kind of fighting spirit, that kind of conviction and determination that we will NOT let them do this to our country. We may have to be provoked. THEY may draw first blood. But WE THE PEOPLE, like the fictional Wolverines, and like our nations Founders, WONT meekly surrender. And if it does come to that, no fortress you build will be able to hide you from the fight that ensues. Youll either be all in or on your knees. Thats the nature of the coming battle.
Hmmm, I think from what you said, one important point to remember is that the one who "draws blood first" will most likely be seen as the aggressor and lose a lot of support and sympathy in the eyes of the world. Case in point, I think the South made the mistake of firing on Ft. Sumter, had the North been the first to fire, I think that would have earned the South some support from other countries.

Any “social upheaval on the part of the right will take place at the ballot box. The left, however, will take to the streets.
