How Can Glenn Beck Be Right on So Much and Yet Still Believe the book of Mormon? (serious question)

Posted on 10/26/2009 7:51:02 AM PDT by Scythian

I'm a huge Beck fan, in fact I'm listening right now here

http://www.ksfa860.com/common/gap_streamer.php

but something really confuses me. It takes the ability to use real critical thinking to know what Beck (and most of us know about the state of the country and where we are heading). That is, we have the ability to discover the truth no matter how much the media or conventional wisdom try to hide it. Yet on Mormonism, Beck is cleary wrong. Any Christian knows that the book or momonism is severely flawed and that Joseph Smith was no prophet. How can Beck cut through all the chaff of what is going on in our world and come to the truth and yet believe the writings of Joseph Smith? It doesn't make sense? I'm not saying he's up to something secret, not by any means, it's just that he's so right about so many things and completely wrong on the most important thing. Now, he just said on the air that he believes Jesus is the Savior of the world and that he is Mormon.

I also think that because he is Mormon he is not attacked near as much if he was a Evangelical Bible only believer. Anyway, am I nutz or does Beck being a Mormon seem bizarre?

Damn good question

I don't think you're nuts. To answer the bigger question, each of us is human, and imperfect. Many (probably all) humans have one or more "weird" beliefs or belief systems - no two humans have the same mind or thought process. I don't give a second thought to Beck's Mormonism, nor to Romney's.

If they were practicing Muslims, I would not trust them, but I harbor no such prejudice against Mormons.

Glen Beck’s opinion about the state of this Country is shared by nearly all Mormons. Of course there is Sen.Harry Reid and his like within the Mormon community, but they are a small minority.

Valid question. 1st) He married into it I think. Obviously if he turned his investigative powers towards Mormonism it wouldnt last a week. But he wont since his wife is Mormon. Maybe someday though.....

If some one wants to defend any religion based on logic and proof , and without relying on sacred scriptures bring it on .

I ain't even gonna try, because there is a leap of faith required in many areas that goes beyond any logic and proof that I can muster.

Almost everyone coming to a personal realization of God simply accepts their surrounding family and cultural norms. Very few are willing to delve deeply, because simple rationality isn’t enough and emotional experiences simply aren’t trustworthy. Having to invent for oneself a new way of thinking about spirituality is just too much for most.

I could care less if he cuts the heads off chickens in his spare time, as long as he keeps exposing the truth about the zero and his commie minions.

I have listened to Beck since 2001.

There is no doubt in my mind that this man has a relationship with Jesus Christ. THAT is what matters most to God, so far be it for me to judge a damn thing.

but if you want to spend precious time worrying about this, rather than ACORN, union thugs, corruption, Marxism, war, terror, unemployment, debt, dollar plummeting etc, God Bless ya!

Before we try to explain Beck’s blind spot re the BoM, we should try to explain his blind spot re Mitt Romney.

Faith involves all that one is, including the intellect.

Many of the greatest intellects in history have been papist Catholics (Augustine & Aquinas spring to mind).

Fides et Ratio (Faith and Reason - meaning that neither one suffices alone) is one motto of the Church.

Regarding Beck, one who applies his intellect when seeking truth about God cannot remain Mormon.

Human beings often compartmentalize, and Beck does this when it comes to his religion: he does not apply his intellect to his faith because he likely understands that he dare not.

Happily, the papist Catholic Church has, for millennia, encouraged the most learned men to test and scrutinize every aspect of Christian doctrine - and this doctrine endures.

You wanna pick on an idiot religion, try Islam - who’s principal prophet would be jailed for child molestation were he to be in this country.

Mohammad was a trader -- the only big religion 'founder' that was very much concerned with economic issues (Moses was a basically an Egyptian prince, Sidharta too, was a prince, and Jesus was a carpenter). So, some of Islamic economic teachings are related to market. Now, if one day there's a fierce pro-market candidate, but happens to be a Muslim, will conservatives support him? How about a gay candidate, like Guido Westerwelle from Germany?

It has nothing to do with what he is doing which in most cases is totally correct. Why bring religion into this? We live in a country where the right to worship the religion you want to believe in is your right. And not the dictation of some human King.

Most conservatives derive from a Christian background, especially since our founders were Christian.

We all know how wise our founders were in the establishment of this nation.

Another aspect of that wonder is that the principles on which we are founded do not conflict with any real religion....except where that religion is bastardized by man’s ego (like so many Islamists today).

You obviously look down on Mormons because you think they are wrong in their beliefs....but isn’t that what all religions believe? Every religion believes it follows the true teachings of God and follows in His principles.

We do not know who is right or wrong until we travel to the gates of heaven and St Peter greets us with the pickup truck and says “Y’all get in the back, we’re headin’ up to the Big House.”

I couldn’t refuse the Jeff Foxworthy quote.

“By and large, Mormons are an honest, clean, decent, industrious and patriotic lot.”

Agreed.

I still believe they are a cult, and that there are serious credibility issues with Mormon writings.

I am told they believe that we will all be gods some day, and thought “that is odd”.

Then I stopped and thought, in most mainstream Christian religions, it is believed that God’s plan is to raise all his (saved) children with perfect bodies, and that they will all live forever, adoring Him.

Hmmmm...essentially, like gods.

So I am willing to give them a pass, especially on the “fruit of the tree” issue.

It is not serious, it is a "look at me vanity".

And a man religion is his religion and it's NOT American to attack that.

That really isn’t true. I’m non-religous, but I see islam and mormonism as ‘standing out’ as particularly bizarre.
