Pres. Obama has described Fox News as "operating basically as a talk-radio format" rather than as a "news outlet."
When NBC's Savannah Guthrie raised [in a segment of her extended interview of the president aired on Today this morning] the issue of White House attacks on Fox News, PBO first tried to play the statesman, resorting to the old dodge about "the American people" being more interested in jobs and the situation in Afghanistan.
But when politely pressed on the issue, PBO didn't hesitate to fustigate Fox.

Don’t you know the left is seething everytime they walk into an establishment that has a TV (dentist office, cafe, etc.) with FOX NEWS tuned in? Let’s make it a point to ask them to change the channel to FOX if it’s not tuned in when you get there! Drive the left more luney toons!

As I pointed out when Axelrod said something similar: when anyone in the Obama administration uses the word “news”, one must understand that it is a translation of the Russian “izvestia” into Newspeak. Since Fox doesn’t report only the Party-approved version of events its not a “news” outlet.
Obama has lost big time on this. It puts him in a hard place for the next three years as having to hide from Fox.
They certainly are and think they will get away with this, due to the fact that the state run media is silent and his lapdogs (with apologize to the dogs)

Sometimes he did well, sometimes he looked awful, but he never tried to say his attackers were not “real” reporters, or “real” news networks.

IIRC, both Helen Thomas and Chip Reid gave Gibbs a pretty good grilling after the story broke. Helen brought up the comparison the the Nixon White House.
