Child-Eating Eagle No Longer a Myth

by Brian Thomas, M.S.*

The Maoris, or native New Zealanders, for generations told stories about a giant bird that could swoop down and carry away human children. As it turns out, those stories held some truth after all...

Now all we need to verify is the elephant-eating Roc that Sinbad talked about.

Remember Peter Falk’s child-eating mosquitoes from “The In-Laws.” An absolutely hilarious bit from a classic movie.

Don’t worry, the green wind turbines will solve this problem plus providing shredded poultry to the starving masses.

Those stupid natives didnt realize that birds have needs just like humans They should have been proud to sacrifice their children so that the bird could live.

Why couldn’t there have been a politician eating bird?

Interesting. Brian Thomas MS* will happily cite a portion of an account of a scientific paper when it supports his contention, but mysteriously neglects to mention its major theme:

"The results indicated not only that Haast’s eagle was a fearsome predator that probably swooped on its prey from a high mountain perch, but also that it evolved over a relatively short period of time from a much smaller-bodied ancestor."

Hate to tell you, but it's a bit of a stretch to get from an eagle that has gone extinct within the last 500 years to Thomas's idea that we are at the peril of a "fiery flying serpent".

A number of species specific to islands have gone extinct after the introduction of humans and their fellow travelers (rats, dogs, pigs, avian disease, etc.). In what way is that evidence of a 6000 year old Earth and proof that dinosaurs walk among us?

Why couldn’t there have been a politician eating bird?

Because they're full of excrement and have no nutritional value.

By the way, life on this planet is scary enough without having to harken back to the days of yesteryear.

I have always found it odd that there are certain people who think referring to children as “kids” is somehow demeaning.

I guess that WOULD strike me as odd, given that I grew up as a military brat, and I have never known a military brat who did anything other than wear that moniker as a badge of honor!

I agree. I, too spent my entire youth through to college as a military brat.

There were five of us and sometimes Dad called us "Brats from the Deep Lagoon."

"Brat" was not derogatory in our family. ;-)
