In ten days (I'd say ten short days, but this time of year the days are never short enough), Ohio State will open its 2009 season with a home game against the United States Naval Academy. It will mark the first time these two teams have faced each other since the 1981 Liberty Bowl, which the Buckeyes won, 31-28. Prior to that, Ohio State and Navy hadn't played since 1931.
Ohio State University wants its fans to know that this isn't exactly the Kentucky School of Turfgrass Management that's coming to town. The Midshipmen are giving up a minimum of four years of their postgraduate life serving this country in harm's way and face a brutal class load off the field. Consequently, they deserve a better treatment than hearing "YOU SUCK, 23" from five directions at once. OSU has a YouTube video saying as much (video after the jump).

He should have won it last year, also. And this year.
I had the same reaction. On many campuses, fans don’t have to be *asked* to treat opponents with respect. I’ve seen some of the video of Ohio State “fans” and it reflects very poorly on them.
Ohioans have a peculiar ethos when it comes to sports. Their greatest football icon punched and tried to choke an opposing player who had the nerve to intercept a pass near the Buckeye sideline. Their greatest baseball icon was banned for betting on the sport (and denying it for years).
Just makes you go "hmmmmm"...
The commitment is six (6) years - not four - after graduation.
Thanks!
No, RR would have dropped about 5 F-bombs in that sentence, although he would know what a classless douchebag is. ;)
I'm not cherry picking. The point was made that Ohio State always plays a weak non-conference schedule and I am offering that they do play some tough scheduled non-conference teams AND that the best (SEC) teams ALSO play some weak non-conference games. I was not trying to make a point that the Ohio State scheduled non-conference games are tougher.
Thanks for making my point as clear as glass. Buckeye fans have nothing else in their life other than the buckeyes and obsessing over Ann Arbor. And thus, buckeye fans are the biggest douchebags in the country. Notice how I am talking about the fans. The team always has talent and is great to root against but the fans make Al Qaeda look innocent and sweet.
none...but having read the accounts of many I know just what real scUM the drunks in ColumbASS are. Why do you think the OSU is even asking their classless moron fans to behave? It’s pathetic that the Uni has to even ask this of their belligerent fans.
If I were the Navy, I’d first carpet bomb ColumbASS before coming into the game.
and looks like Mike Adams won’t be be attending the game..I mean he won’t be suited up as his idiot self was suspended for the NAvy and USC game. So much for being a 5* and #3 over all HS player out of high school.
Some of the first lessons in civility are that you shouldn't generalize and call names.
You just called me and a lot of other Freepers douchbags with no other interests in their lives. I will refrain from saying what I think regarding your behavior. If I knew your team, I would refrain from making negative comments. That's because I have manners, just like many other Ohio State fans.
I am a Buckeye fan, and an Alumni (BSME 1988). I enjoy watching Ohio State. I have other interests. I am a conservative. I am not a douchbag.
EVERY team has rowdy and sometimes unruly fans. I've seen it from all school we played when I was in college. It goes along with sports in general. It doesn't make it right, and at least Ohio State is doing something to attempt to reel-in the lower fans out of respect for the Navy team.
You are right and I apologize. A small minority of Buckeye fans are not douchebags as I know some who are are objective. But as for the majority, even you know that your fellow fans are down right aholes. And while all fans of a certain teams have their own douchebag ahole fans, there are certain teams that take the cake. OSU is one of those teams.
Congratulations. You just apologized for admittedly generalizing, then, in the very next sentence, call the majority of OSU fans aholes once again.
Here’s a generalization for you. Tell me what group you’re elective associated with. Then I can generally call the majority of that group a bunch of aholes, based on anecdotal evidence.
If FreeRepublic had an IGNORE function, I’d use it on you.
Again, they are not asking the fans to behave. They are asking the fans to cheer for Navy as a sign of respect. I’m a season ticket holder and I received the communications. I know of what I speak. The headline is another typical media misrepresentation of facts. They do that with more than political news.
Oh I see, you launch an ad hominem attack against Buckeye fans and you use a like retort as some form of straw man evidence to prove what? You’d make a fine liberal. That’s exactly how they work it.
Douchebag? Pot - meet kettle.
it would be the highlight of the college football season to see Navy beat Ohio State, the way that Appalachian State took down Michigan in the 2007 opener.
