Black scholar agrees to beer with Obama, policeman

A prominent black Harvard University scholar has accepted an invitation to have a beer with President Barack Obama and the white police officer who arrested him in a racially charged case.

Professor Henry Louis Gates said Saturday he was willing to have a peace-making beer with Obama and Cambridge, Massachusetts, police Sgt. James Crowley.

Gates was arrested last week at his home after a neighbor called police to say that a man was breaking into the house. Obama said Cambridge police had "acted stupidly," prompting an outcry from police groups and a resulting media blitz.

You know that, as someone unfamiliar with the White House, he will be uncomfortable and not on equal terms with Gates and Obama. And of course they will patronize him, as the educated, cultured ones there.

I have checked out Gates's Vita and read some of his "scholarship." Suffice it to say that if Gates were white, he would never have come anywhere near the Harvard Faculty lounge except as a janitor emptying the waste baskets.The rampant race pandering of the '70's and '80's is its own reward--or punishment-- depending on what is important to you.

That would be strange, since Crowley made the suggestion to Obama. I think it's smart. Clearly, Crowley won the argument. Politically, imo, damage done. O's remarks at the presser completed obliterated any hopes of selling his health care scam.

He betrayed himself as well. He gave a knee jerk, accidentally sincere reaction, and got burned for it. Makes you think of Rev. Wright and all that other stuff.

So the cop won out, thankfully. He's showing top drawer sportsmanship. He's supposedly an exemplary cop. He still has to work in Cambridge. He's a gracious winner. Good on him.
