Montana gov blasts GM mine contract cancellation (Obama closes US mines in Montana)
Business Week ^ | 7/10/09 | Matt Brown

Posted on 07/10/2009 11:03:57 PM PDT by pissant

Gov. Brian Schweitzer is calling on the Obama administration to force General Motors to honor its contract with a Montana mining company instead of going overseas to buy the precious metals used to control vehicle pollution.

By failing to shield the platinum and palladium mines, the Democrat said Friday that the administration had shown a bias against his state -- at a time when other U.S. jobs were protected with a "buy American" clause in the $787 billion stimulus act. GM is shedding its contracts with Stillwater Mining Co.'s platinum and palladium mines as part of the automaker's emergence from bankruptcy protection.....

(snip)

Columbus-based Stillwater employs more than 1,300 people and runs the only mines in the United States producing the metals, about 90 miles southwest of Billings.

With platinum and palladium mined in just two other countries, Russia and South Africa, Schweitzer said GM's cancellation would put the U.S. at a strategic risk and hurt the mining industry.

A White House spokesman declined comment.

Have you ever seen the list of materials given the Soviets via Lend-Lease? It’s pretty incredible.

http://www.geocities.com/mark_willey/lend.html

Read up on Major Jordan’s Diaries. It’s pretty amazing, and there seems to have been some really questionable shipments made, of things like, say, heavy water and other nuclear materials.

Um, no, it’s not a fraud, that’s how utilities operate. You have to take power plants down for maintenance, and they fail on their own and create unplanned outages. Just totaling up all possible generation and comparing that to a USA peak demand is pretty simplistic, as best. There are lots of reasons why big chunks of installed generating capacity aren’t available at any given time.

Have you ever worked at an electrical utility? Do you have any sort of engineering background? Have you ever seen a utility VP sweat getting and keeping enough plants online to meet summer demand load? And, again, your 20% figure really doesn’t reflect any sort of applicable reality. Did you even bother to look at those links I posted?

You need to learn to analyze this stuff on your own, and not just believe all the PR from the Greens and the EV people.

Again, I’m not saying it can’t be done, but it’s not as easy / rosy as you are painting it here.

as for my college, I have a BS in electrical engineering,
but not electric power as a specialty.

there seems to be a lot of wasted electricity at night,
because it is cheap.
aluminum smelters, I guess, operate at night.
they could move somewhere else. , same for other ‘night electric consumers’

the price of electricity at night will reach a new balance that
represents the (hypotheticaly) future new value of electricity.

that future new value is,,,,
cutiing the filthy middle east ragheads out of the
US economy.

[At recent palladium market prices, the contracts had been shielding Stillwater from the equivalent of $57 million in lost annual sales, according to the company's filings with the Securities and Exchange Commission. . .(Russian-owned) Norilsk controls 53 percent of Stillwater’s stock.]

“Palladium bullion has ISO currency codes of XPD and 964. Palladium is one of only four metals to have such codes, the others being gold, silver and platinum,” according to Wikipedia.

Beck said the other week that if one were an enemy of America they could not have made a better plan than what bozo has done.
I agree

The way bozo has gone about things is the best way to destroy this country

Course I am preaching to many in the choir on here even though there was some who still wanted to give him a chance but the fact is that he is out to destroy us.

While this is going on he is bringing over a 100,000 Palestinians to SO Cal, soon he will bring many more form Africa and Asia as he is intent on changing the demographics of this country and bringing down America from within.

I believe that there is some Dems who love this country but they are just too dumb to realise that bozo is ruining us

0bama is screwing the USA with EVERY decision.

Yeah... it's almost as if the change in administration didn't make any difference whatsoever.
The Ship of State may have changed direction, but we're still headed for the rocky shoals.

coal, my favorite fuel

Do you really think 0bama will allow more coal to be burnt to make electricity?

A permitted and planned new 900 MW unit was just abandoned in my state. California doesn't want dirty power. Most of the power from this unit goes to CA.

Anyway,... COAL IS the answer

but to Freepers the question is: What abundant fuel does the USA need to burn to obtain energy independence?

To 0bama and his 53 million ilk the question is: What abundant fuel do we need to outlaw to drive the USA into slavery?

Honestly stop and think. Is another coal plant going to be built?

Don't think so.

Having traveled to the latest post and back (149), I’m dumbfounded. The debate could go two ways: protectionist or free market. Instead, it’s the Rats’s problem. The metal is still in the ground in MT. It’s just not economically viable to mine it here. Looks like everyone here wants to subsidize it.

Even though the gov is a rat, I believe, MT is a conservative state. I have thought and said for some time beginning with my learning about ostammer’s connection to ACORN that one of the rats’ objectives will be to starve conservative states.

I guess there’s some satisfaction to take in knowing that rats who live in states that came up red in ‘08 but voted for ostammer will have to suffer, too.

The rats in MT helped put ostammer over the Hillary hump, if you remember. This is how he thanks them. Of course, he may well find a way to take care of them anyway.

Obama is anti-US. Just follow the money, as Lenin said, and you will figure out the Obama is for sale to the highest bidder, usually foreign.

Notice how nobody is even asking about the $850 million that Obama collected. And the 'Rats had the gaul to file charges of election violations against McCain because he initially said he would accept public financing, back when Obama said he would also.

So, when Obama went back on his promise, and a small donation of private monies came into the McCain Campaign, the effing vultures swooped down on him.

Absolutely pathetics POS's, all of them.

I’m somewhat confused. Billings is due EAST of Columbus- about a 45 minute drive.

Why would the mines be stated as being S E of Billings, when the headquarters are in Columbus?

Or is this another example of very poor and not very distinct reporting?

Either way- Why would anyone expect NObama to keep his word on anything?
He threw the SECURED Bondholders under the bus when he engineered the bankruptcy of GM.
He gave the UAW shares of GM that he didn’t own—what happened to those stockholders?
The suppliers that were owned money by GM have faded into the wilderness, as there have been no reports of how they got paid.

Last, but not least, ALL personal injury cases that were pending and winding their way thru the courts against GM were cancelled by NObama.

Sure sounds like he is a law-abiding President. !!!

Sorry- I have an eye bothering me and I read SE when it clearly states SW.
That makes more sense.
Columbus is a very small town. This loss of jobs will hammer it really hard.

Another example of the biggest basis for NObama destroying this country-—

Kill all contracts and contract laws.

if I had the secret password, I could probably follow the trail to where some of the "Stimulus " money went at this platinum mining tracking site http://www.infomine.com/commodities/platinum.asp
