CPAC Chairman: Palin Not Ready for Presidential Run

Thursday, July 9, 2009 8:27 AM

By: Ronald Kessler

Sarah Palin needs to stop whining about unfair media coverage and get over the fact that some people don’t like her, Dave Keene, chairman of the American Conservative Union, tells Newsmax.

Palin doesn’t seem to get that politics is a tough game, says Keene, one of the country’s most astute political observers.

The American Conservative Union, with 1 million members, runs the annual Conservative Political Action Conference (CPAC) in Washington and publishes an annual "Rating of Congress," the gold standard for ideological assessments of members of Congress.

“You’ve got to recognize that there are people who want you to fail,” Keene says. “And if you spend your time worrying about them, or whining about what they say, at the very least it’ll get you off your game, because you ought to be worried about what you’re going to do, not about what they’re going to do to you.”

Resigning as governor of Alaska only compounded Palin’s problems, which have been accumulating since the November election, Keene says.

“In the period leading up to the resignation, she needed to get over the fact that people didn’t like her,” Keene says. “Get over the fact that she harbored resentment for the McCain people that used her. All of those things are true, but she got more out of it than they did, and she had to begin to move on with what she needed to establish in terms of her own image, to move to the next level. And she delayed doing that.

"Now it becomes more difficult because of the way in which she bailed out on the governorship.”

David Keene, Managing Associate of the Carmen Group Lobbying Firm, and Head of CPAC, Alexandria, VA.

Political contributions in 2008 election cycle:

KEENE, DAVID, ALEXANDRIA,VA 22314 THE CARMEN GROUP/EXEC 5/1/07 $1,000 Specter, Arlen (R)

KEENE, DAVID, ALEXANDRIA,VA 22314 THE CARMEN GROUP/EXEC 12/19/07 $800 Specter, Arlen (R)

KEENE, DAVID, ALEXANDRIA,VA 22314 THE CARMEN GROUP/EXEC 12/19/07 $200 Specter, Arlen (R)

Add to this the fact that this bum also endorsed Romney in December 2007 and you got a guy that has "part of the problem" stamped on his forehead.

DO NOT DONATE TO CPAC!

He used the word, not me.

Yeah, I caught that the very moment I hit the "post" button. I tried to take it back but the system wouldn't let me! I still think you know what he meant and it ain't REALLY "worship". EEE is poking at you.

Gee, you didn't like the way a poster phrased a sentence—the praise was just a little too faint for you—so you throw even her under the bus? Just keep purging until nothing but 100% devoted Palin worshipers are left?

Hello, Maximilien Robespierre.

Do you honestly think the Democrats don’t think Obama is one of them, or that the Democrats didn’t vote for him lock stock and barrel, knowing exactly what he promised to do?

Certainly he’s a Democrat. I can’t help it what Democrats have become today, but that’s the long and the short of it.

As for McCain, if you play footsies with guys like Soros and company, you’re certainly not on our side of the isle. Closing Gitmo, adopting Kyoto, backing Obama’s cuts in military procurements, proposing legislation with Kerry, Kennedy, and Feingold?

He’s certainly not a nationalist. He’s certainly not a Conservative. He’s certainly not a Republican in any real sense of the word.

It’s okay with me if you disagree, but I think there’s too much of an argument to be made regarding McCain to state he’s more of an (R) than a (D).

To a lessor or greater degree, he is a Democrat more than a Republican. And that leads me to say we were dealing with a one party system last fall.

I appreciate the opposing viewpoint.

Her record is somewhat hard to criticize, for a number of reasons.

1) She was governor for only 2 1/2 years. By design. Before that, she was a mayor of a small town.

2) Many of her accomplishments that I know of are Alaska-specific and difficult to analyze except for through a Last-Frontier-lens. She was successful in her dealings with oil companies and the pipelines from what I understand.

3) When she entered the national scene, she had been governor for what, 1 1/2 years? Much of her time governing has been either campaigning for McCain, or alterating between heroine-worship and demonizing, depending on the audience.

4) She has been hampered down by ethics issues—I won’t comment on the merit of them because I honestly don’t know the details.

5) I truly don’t know much about her record, and rarely see any reference to specifics.

For me, it appears that much of what draws people to her is her personality.

What is Sarah’s record? I truly want to know. Perhaps then I will be able to better understand the level of dedication to her.

“Yeah, The poster has already said I am a slob and never apologized for boorish behavior.”

No, I didn’t. And if I did, it came out wrong. There were about a hundred posts flying around. I was trying to say that “Maybe she isn’t..” was like the old quote - and you may not be familiar with it - “gee, you don’t sweat much ...etc.” struck me as being an off handed compliment. Then the boy lawyer stuck his nose in and I became a little confused about what was being said by who. I looked back just now and I owe you an apology, because I was not careful in trying to make my point. I apologize to you, and did not mean that to be a personal insult to you.

You.
Neoliberalnot
I do not know you but I guarantee you that you could and would do a better job living within our means if you were anything in this govt.
These assclowns get to D.C. and lose all touch with reality.
Spend spend spend becomes a disease.
You know 50 maybe 60 percent of government is b.s. and not needed. Get rid of it. Make those folks get real jobs that contribute and not suck from society.
same for most folks here at F.R. they too would and would do a better job not just try to feather their nests.

Well, thank you. Look. I am watching Sarah, I believe good things are going to come from her....but...I have 3 years yet and so does Sarah. Lets give her a chance to show her stuff. I worship no one but God.

Do I think she could be a good POTUS? Yes I do. I support her and hope she will gain in popularity and stay true to the conservative cause!

Arguendo: David Keene was National Chairman of Young Americans for Freedom in about 1971. Personally ineffective, he wormed his way into the DC conservative permanent bureaucracy and did well financially. For more money, he supported and worked for Bush the Elder against Ronaldus Maximus in 1980, not that it made a difference. He is probably on Romney's payroll now. The principles do not much matter so long as Keene is well cuddled financially for little performance. The ACU of John Ashbrook would not have tolerated him. Unfortunately Ashbrook is gone.

Sarah Palin is a verrrrry promising example of conservative leadership as Keene is not. So Keene tries to take her down a peg or three. Why would any actual conservative take Keene seriously on this sort of thing???

Palin is a populist and an effective one. Keene is neither. Conservatism was meant for far nobler causes than protecting David Keene and his income from taxation.

IIRC, the ACU under Keene even criticized the Iraq War from a paleopipsqueak point of view.

The major difference between Sarah Palin and David Keene is that her track record of principle has led to her being elected to major office while Keene has never been elected to any office of significance, though he has tried. As he has shown little passion for principle, Governor Palin has shown much. The public has reacted accordingly.

Finally, you have achieved the near impossible by giving me the opportunity to post that I agree far more with EEE's posts in this thread than I do with yours. You are beating on EEE for his virtues which is never a good idea.

1. She was governor for only 2 1/2 years.

About the Governor

Governor Sarah Palin made history on Dec. 4, 2006, when she took office. As the 11th governor of Alaska, she is the first woman to hold the office.

Since taking office, her top priorities have been resource development, education and workforce development, public health and safety, and transportation and infrastructure development.

Under her leadership, Alaska invested $5 billion in state savings, overhauled education funding, and implemented the Senior Benefits Program that provides support for low-income older Alaskans. She created Alaska’s Petroleum Systems Integrity Office to provide oversight and maintenance of oil and gas equipment, facilities and infrastructure, and the Climate Change Subcabinet to prepare a climate change strategy for Alaska.

During her first legislative session, Governor Palin’s administration passed two major pieces of legislation - an overhaul of the state’s ethics laws and a competitive process to construct a gas pipeline.

Governor Palin is chair of the Interstate Oil and Gas Compact Commission, a multi-state government agency that promotes the conservation and efficient recovery of domestic oil and natural gas resources while protecting health, safety and the environment. She was recently named chair of the National Governors Association (NGA) Natural Resources Committee, which is charged with pursuing legislation to ensure state needs are considered as federal policy is formulated in the areas of agriculture, energy, environmental protection and natural resource management. Prior to being named to this position, she served as co-chair of this committee.

2A) Prior to her election as governor, Palin served two terms on the Wasilla City Council and two terms as the mayor/manager of Wasilla. During her tenure, she reduced property tax levels while increasing services and made Wasilla a business friendly environment, drawing in new industry.

2)She has served as chair of the Alaska Conservation Commission, which regulates Alaska’s most valuable non-renewable resources: oil and gas. She was elected by her peers to serve as president of the Alaska Conference of Mayors. In this role, she worked with local, state and federal officials to promote solutions to the needs of Alaska’s communities.

Prior to taking office, Palin served on numerous boards and commissions throughout the state. She was active in her family’s pursuits - including serving as a sports team mom and school volunteer. She also runs marathons.

Palin is a lifetime member of the NRA and enjoys hunting, fishing, Alaska history, and all that Alaska’s great outdoors has to offer.

3)Much of her time governing has been either campaigning for McCain, or alterating between heroine-worship and demonizing, depending on the audience. (Not much to answer here, except GFY.

4)Ethics issues...holding up a fish and wearing a logo windbreaker...think that is just way to shady?

5)Record - see above. Addendum;

We aggressively and responsibly develop our resources because they were created to be used to better our world... to HELP people... and we protect the environment and Alaskans (the resource owners) foremost with our policies.

Here’s some of the things we’ve done:

We created a petroleum integrity office to oversee safe development. We held the line FOR Alaskans on Point Thomson - and finally for the first time in decades - they’re drilling for oil and gas.

We have AGIA, the gasline project - a massive bi-partisan victory (the vote was 58 to 1!) - also succeeding as intended - protecting Alaskans as our clean natural gas will flow to energize us, and America, through a competitive, pro-private sector project. This is the largest private sector energy project, ever. THIS is energy independence.

And ACES - another bipartisan effort - is working as intended and industry is publicly acknowledging its success. Our new oil and gas “clear and equitable formula” is so Alaskans will no longer be taken advantage of. ACES incentivizes NEW exploration and development and JOBS that were previously not going to happen with a monopolized North Slope oil basin.

We cleaned up previously accepted unethical actions; we ushered in bi-partisan Ethics Reform.

We also slowed the rate of government growth, we worked with the Legislature to save billions of dollars for the future, and I made no lobbyist friends with my hundreds of millions of dollars in budget vetoes... but living beyond our means today is irresponsible for tomorrow.

We took government out of the dairy business and put it back into private-sector hands - where it should be.

We provided unprecedented support for education initiatives, and with the right leadership, finally filled long-vacant public safety positions. We built a sub-Cabinet on Climate Change and took heat from Outside special interests for our biologically-sound wildlife management for abundance.

We broke ground on the new prison.

And we made common sense conservative choices to eliminate personal luxuries like the jet, the chef, the junkets... the entourage.

And the Lt. Governor and I said “no” to our pay raises.

And, you say “For me, it appears that much of what draws people to her is her personality.”

Well, that and; she walks the walk. She had a Downs baby that MANY would have aborted, she stood by her kids in crisis and she did not flinch. She has chosen to take on the national political scene in much the same way she has taken on the local scene.

If extensive experience in Govt. is required for your support, how is John Mccain working out for you?

Again, ridiculous. Why do you even say stuff like this?

Why are you saying there are other Republicans who criticized Obama's policies when they clearly didn't?

Sure Sanford and DeMint and other Republicans fought the stimulus, but did they educate people on why they opposed it?

That's the beauty of Palin. She is contrasting her ideas with that of Obama.

"Who is more accepted by the majority of FReepers?" Nobody, which is what prompted my previous comment."

Well now, If you are so sure that Governor Palin is so totally unfitted for the job of beginning the mending of the basdly tattered Republican Party, let's have a bit of that 'constructive criticism' you debunkers are so fond of talking about. You know, like, whom would you name as a savior of the basket-case gang -- laughingly referred to as the Republican Party?

GAME! Politics is not a game it is dealing with people's lives. Jackson understood that, and was hated by the elitists of his day. Reagan understood it as well, and the “so called Conservative intelectuals; mocked him as a dunce. This is elitism pure and simple. As someone else said on this site, “God is removing the wheat from the chaff.” This is about the Sovernity of America to fight the Antichrist Empire. Sarah, I believe is beginning to see her prophetic role in this, as Reagan saw and fulfilled his prophetic destiny.
Even so, Come Lord YESUA.
