CPAC Chairman: Palin Not Ready for Presidential Run

Thursday, July 9, 2009 8:27 AM

By: Ronald Kessler

Sarah Palin needs to stop whining about unfair media coverage and get over the fact that some people don’t like her, Dave Keene, chairman of the American Conservative Union, tells Newsmax.

Palin doesn’t seem to get that politics is a tough game, says Keene, one of the country’s most astute political observers.

The American Conservative Union, with 1 million members, runs the annual Conservative Political Action Conference (CPAC) in Washington and publishes an annual "Rating of Congress," the gold standard for ideological assessments of members of Congress.

“You’ve got to recognize that there are people who want you to fail,” Keene says. “And if you spend your time worrying about them, or whining about what they say, at the very least it’ll get you off your game, because you ought to be worried about what you’re going to do, not about what they’re going to do to you.”

Resigning as governor of Alaska only compounded Palin’s problems, which have been accumulating since the November election, Keene says.

“In the period leading up to the resignation, she needed to get over the fact that people didn’t like her,” Keene says. “Get over the fact that she harbored resentment for the McCain people that used her. All of those things are true, but she got more out of it than they did, and she had to begin to move on with what she needed to establish in terms of her own image, to move to the next level. And she delayed doing that.

"Now it becomes more difficult because of the way in which she bailed out on the governorship.”

David Keene, Managing Associate of the Carmen Group Lobbying Firm, and Head of CPAC, Alexandria, VA.

Political contributions in 2008 election cycle:

KEENE, DAVID, ALEXANDRIA,VA 22314 THE CARMEN GROUP/EXEC 5/1/07 $1,000 Specter, Arlen (R)

KEENE, DAVID, ALEXANDRIA,VA 22314 THE CARMEN GROUP/EXEC 12/19/07 $800 Specter, Arlen (R)

KEENE, DAVID, ALEXANDRIA,VA 22314 THE CARMEN GROUP/EXEC 12/19/07 $200 Specter, Arlen (R)

Add to this the fact that this bum also endorsed Romney in December 2007 and you got a guy that has "part of the problem" stamped on his forehead.

A little over a year ago, the “majority of Freepers” were getting Chris Matthews tingles down their legs for Fred Thompson. That worked out so well...

You make a good point. The two problems with Fred were his very late start in the campaign and the fact that he wasn't as charismatic in person as he appeared in print or film.

That being said, Sarah and Fred have very similar platforms and beliefs. The differences this time is that Sarah is the most charismatic conservative we have and now that she has resigned she can begin building her organization. Sarah Palin is everything good about Thompson plus everything he was not.

Yes, it's an ad hominem, though it's at least a fair attack on his conservative credentials. If he endorses a candidate his conservative credibility matters. But if he makes a fairly objective comment on her 2012 credentials, such as what I'm copying below, that's something that can be addressed on its face.

“What she’s proved is that she’s a very popular person, she’s an incredible political property, in the early stages as governor she made a real impression, she was a reformer, she was all of those things. But now she hasn’t followed through. Her pipeline project is up in the air, and it’s as if she dropped it to run after something else. But she hasn’t even made clear what it is she’s running after."

You’re wrong.

These little panty wastes that pretend to be conservative can’t see that we know what they are doing. They spend all their time attacking someone they should be defending. Why aren’t they going after Zero? Why aren’t these people denouncing what he’s doing and talking about conservative solutions? I guess you have to actually be a conservative to understand what a conservative solution is. They have no idea how bad they look.

It’s like a milquetoast who gets beat up and his lunch taken every day kissing the bullies’ rear end while yelling at the one who prepares his lunch for him.

Like Reagan, Sarah helps conservatives. Conservatives can see that. These people hated Reagan, they hate Sarah too. The liberal infiltrators need to be flushed. CPAC needs to get to work on its plumbing.

Well, she did quit....

Doesn't sound like she "quit" to me. Or aren't you listening to her, instead of the "experts"?

She resigned the governorship because the lying opposition made it impoossible for her and her staff to do the job for which she was elected. So she RESIGNED that one -- and she has already said what she is going to do for now. And that does not mean sitting on her tush like quitters do.

You’re saying I should leave this site to preserve my still fairly positive image of Palin?

Doesn’t say much for these “supporters” here, does it, if all they can do is drive people away?

Prior to being elected president, if Obama were to apply for the job of CEO of any major corporation he would never get hired.

I wouldn't hire tht know-nothing amatuer to listen for the bell on the french fries cooker.

I do like Sarah, based on my posts this thread I defy you to show mw where I have not showed support.

Her detractors, Dems and GOP like to say that she isn’t smart enough. She has the same smarts of a Ronald Reagan. She puts on no Ivy League “airs”, but has an inborn sense of things and good instincts.

They fought the stimulus bill but only Palin has been criticizing Zero's overall policies.

Again, ridiculous. Why do you even say stuff like this?

“I really like Sarah, she connects, shes probably a lot smarter than she is given credit for.”

Doesn’t sound like someone who supports her...

LOL, you make a post that is 100% supportive of Palin and you still get called a “fat slob” by one of these “supporters” I was talking about. I’m telling you, there’s no pleasing these people.

Is there no end to anal-retentive idiots claiming to be real Conservatives??

I think D.C. must be some slime hole infected with the "Look at Me, I'm So Important" virus. I am really getting to have an overall disdain for these Republican / Conservative organizasions.

I think you are a little going off the deep end. All of my posts have been very supportive.

I like her, I am a female, I am not in love with her. Geesh, be fair.

The phrase is one that illustrates somebody who professes to like someone. Also known as “damning with faint praise.” Not that it is any of your business, but I was attacking the pathetic idea that you would repeat and endorse critics while “in support” of someone. Get it? And if you don’t like being around “these people” (another way of referring to those you look down at) WTF keeps you here?

I still say that the ONLY problem with Fred was that he wasn't as charismatic in person as he appeared in print or film. He could have been. He is trained to be. He, for whatever reason, didn't want the job. It was his for the taking.

His PAC sends me two or three donation letters a week. It will not get a dime. THAT money goes to SarahPAC.

Okay, first, I don’t remember David Keene being crowned pope of the conservative movement. Actually, I don’t remember ANYBODY being crowned pope of the conservative movement. Nobody has that kind of stature right now. Not even the gov. Certainly not David Keene. Until somebody shows me proof of that, opinions...everybody has them. Just like the other thing everybody has.

Second, I don’t remember David Keene EVER having...a tenth? one percent?...of the crap thrown at him personally that the governor did during and after this last campaign. I can think of very few figures in the conservative movement who’ve come close to getting that kind and quality of abuse...again, certainly not him. When he can show us that, I’ll respect his calling the gov a whiner and a quitter. Let’s just go ahead and stipulate he can’t, because he can’t.

Third...I think both the GOP establishment and the conservative establishment could do with worrying less about whether Sarah Palin is getting her stuff handled, and more about whether they’re getting their own stuff handled. Because truth be told, as far as I can tell, she’s doing a lot better at handling her stuff than they are at handling theirs.
