VATICAN CITY (Reuters) - Pope Benedict called on Tuesday for a "world political authority" to manage the global economy and for more government regulation of national economies to pull the world out of the current crisis and avoid a repeat.
The pope made his call for a re-think of the way the world economy is run in a new encyclical which touched on a number of social issues but whose main connecting thread was how the current crisis has affected both rich and poor nations.
Parts of the encyclical, titled "Charity in Truth," seemed bound to upset free marketeers because of its underlying rejection of unbridled capitalism and unregulated market forces, which he said had led to "thoroughly destructive" abuse of the system.
The pope said every economic decision had a moral consequence and called for "forms of redistribution" of wealth overseen by governments to help those most affected by crises.
Benedict said "there is an urgent need of a true world political authority" whose task would be "to manage the global economy; to revive economies hit by the crisis; to avoid any deterioration of the present crisis and the greater imbalances that would result."

John Hagee has said some things about this.
I’m not going to say more, because I will get flamed and attacked.
I think the Pope should try reading the Bible.
Then may we tke it that you agree with the Pope’s idea? If so, who should lead this super world government, the Pope or the idiot Obama, who is trying to become dictator already?
One of the reasons that I am a fallen away RC.
There already is one. It is called the free market. Everything else is a futile attempt to restrain the unrestrainable.

“So the Pope is a communist?”
Nope. Not even close.
“Big surprise.”
What is most surprising is how you could embarrass yourself this way.
“Im a Christian, not a Catholic.”
Catholics are Christians.
“Therefore, I view the pope as a good man who is flawed, and quite falible.”
He would agree with you.
“History tells us that the good modifier was a stretch for some popes.”
Yes, and “great” and “saintly” was a good modifier for many of them.
“As such, Id wish for the pope to tend to his business, that of spiritual guidance, and stay out of economic matters.”
Sometimes the two are very related. Ever hear of the poor?
WOW! How incredibly rude!
All Americans are not rich - they have set up a system that has enabled them to enjoy the fruits of much hard labor, unlike the other places you mention where it is simply stolen from them by that big one government.
Ok, this has got to be satire on the old “The Pope is the False Prophet of The Beast Anti-Christ system... blah, blah, blah”.
If not, IT IS MIND BOGGLING THAT THIS CURRENT VERY GODLY POPE, COULD BE SO INCREDIBLY IGNORANT AS TO WHAT HE IS CALLING FOR?! OMG!!!!!!!!!!!!
Proud once again to be Protestant.
Before this thread devolves into a bash-fest of Catholicism, let’s all try to remember that, as Larry Lucido said (implied) upthread, the Pope does not, nay, even CAN NOT, speak infallibly on matters not regarding faith and morals, thus, this should not be considered “official Catholic dogma” in any way. That is, economic opinion is not a matter of “faith and morals”.
With that said, also, I think it would behoove everyone to actually read the entire encyclical to gain a proper understanding of what the Pope is saying (and not saying). Found here: http://www.vatican.va/holy_father/benedict_xvi/encyclicals/documents/hf_ben-xvi_enc_20090629_caritas-in-veritate_en.html
I haven’t read it fully myself, but I’d be willing to bet he’s probably not calling for a “one world government” as some are believing.

What an incredibly ignorant comment on your part. He knows the Bible very well - including those verses about the poor and justice.
It is amazing to me how many Americans mistake American captalism for Christianity. Capitalism can serve Christianity, but it is not Chrisianity in itself by any stretch of the imagination.
Have you? How about telling us exactly where Reuters is lying?
It was released today, although signed by BXVI on the 29th. It is over 100 pages long with 160 footnotes - I don’t put a ton of stock in the MSMs reading of it.
Not even GOD ALMIGHTY HIMSELF puts a gun to your head and forces you to give to Him or to others. He says to do it with a good heart, cheerfully or don’t bother.
Hmmm....the illuminati....the free masons.....rockefeller.....skull and bones....secret societies....the catholic church....New World Order....

I guess God was wrong to have His prophets complain so much in the Bible about poverty and injustice then, right? Strange how Jesus thought it mattered to the souls of men - and their judgment - but you think it doesn’t.
There is no global authority that can, or will be, moral.”
****
And that is really all that needs to be said.
