Generally speaking, I’m a believer in the rule that we should not speak ill of the dead. Or at least we should wait a decent interval before doing so (if we never spoke ill of the dead, history would be meaningless). But, I must say I find the media’s instinctive rush to sanctify Michael Jackson disgusting.
Look, I understand that Michael Jackson was an "icon." I understand that some people loved his work and that many people who never met him believed they loved the man too.
But I didn't, and I’m hardly alone. If Michael Jackson were just another famous person, I’d probably stay silent and let the pro forma celebration of his memory roll by without comment. (For instance, I have no problem whatsoever with the media taking a moment to pay respects to Farah Fawcett).

You can’t ignore that he’s sold more records than anyone else. That’s an objective fact. You may be a snob who holds himself above the public taste but I think that says more about you than about MJ’s music. I think his music rates highly. Only time can tell but I generally think that people will still listen to Jackson’s music for a long time to come because they are good songs that people can relate to.
Musically he can’t be compared to Elvis or The Beatles. They changed music and society- Michael did neither. To his credit he could perform and did record some catchy tunes, but James Brown was better, IMHO.
He’s another soul who’s now in a better place- hopefully?

Jackson's death leaves me with only the echo of his sparkling past...
Hmmmm, I don’t think I was dancing on his grave. I wasn’t a fan of his music and thought he was one really odd duck. His death just didn’t have much of an impact on me. His family is devasted and thats always a sad thing but does it warrent wall to wall coverage from the MSM?? There are other things going on in the world right now that will have a DIRECT impact on this nation. Jackson’s death is sad (he was a pitiful man), but lets not go nutty on this.
Now the DUmmies will claim that Karl Rove murdered Michael Jackson to take the heat off Mark Sanford.
I was never a big James Brown fan either, but at least Brown’s music was directed at a mature crowd. I can listen to “I Feel Good” and some of his other stuff without reaching for the dial. Jackson’s musical appeal was totally lost on me.
Name some of his songs that people, other than you, will listen to for a long time.
As a 51 year old white woman I’ll admit that the Jackson 5 was one of the first 45s I bought (Temptations Ball of Confusion was my first record). Grew up with bubblegum pop and Motown.
In gym in grammar school our teacher played pop music for us to run laps to. I remember “A B C”, “Stop the Love You Save” and oddly enough, “Take a Letter, Maria”, by some one-shot wonder whose name eludes me.
I remember the dawn of MTV as I graduated college and hit the working world. My new husband & I enjoyed Thriller and some “new wave” music.
Lost track of the newer music and I have become primarily a classic rock fan with a little of the new music thrown in. Jackson got just too weird for me to be able to watch or listen to. A shame; he was a talented performer and probably would have been able to leave a positive social mark with all his wealth if he hadn’t gone nuts.
Got a kick out of hearing my kids sing “I’ll be There” for their middle school graduation and thinking that Michael Jackson was from their generation.
Muawiyah, BTW, is still alive and kicking. He doesn't run with a bandit gang, race cars, or mess around with morphine.
But, we all strived to live large and beyond the expectations of others who prefer the quiet of home and TV-dinners.
My absolute favorite James Brown tune was “Living in America”.
Irwin’s death still haunts me a bit. He was such an adventurer and from all reports was just as friendly and personable as can be. I have some friends that, may not have known him, but have friends that knew him. They’re from New Zealand and are big naturalists and so would have colleagues in common. We’re going to wonder from now until eternity (but only until) whether or not he actually did accept Christ.
