“If we start throwing out everyone who has had a discretion....who are we left with?”

Ummm.....moral people? Or is it better to throw out our values and vote for RINOs, just so long as we win? If so, what did we win?

“COLUMBIA, S.C. — Gov. Mark Sanford of South Carolina said Wednesday that he had been conducting an extramarital affair with a woman in Argentina for the last year, ending the mystery surrounding his disappearance over Father’s Day weekend and considerably dampening his prospects for a national political career.”

I’m sure this Argentinian woman, as a wise Latina with her richness of experiences, would bring Sanford to a better sexual conclusion than his white wife who hasn’t lived that life...

Must not laugh, ought not laugh....

who determines morality?

When a party decides to be the author of morality are they not being a sort of church, with moral guidlines as to what is acceptable to maintain good standing within the body?

our politicians are representatives of the constituents that vote them in. You are getting your church and politicians confused...to have a “moral” politician is an added bonus, but not a prerequisite, but remember the same morality is that of the person who is only moral because of the grace of God. If you believe we are saved by Grace...then shouldnt the same grace be extended to them if they sin....if you can’t do that, for a politician...then you or anyone else should never hope for a moral politician.

Sure, that grace should be extended to them if they sin, and are asking for the grace to change. HOWEVER, that doesn’t mean there should be no consequences to their actions. Maybe the power got to be too much and he thought he was untouchable. Maybe, just maybe, through the humbling of a powerful man, he may find himself ready to ask for and accept the grace God will surely offer. If there is no consequence, including losing the office of governor, he may never get to that point. Who knows. However, let’s not complain about Bill Clinton, and scream how character matters, and then be hypocritical about how much character counts when it is one of “our guys” who falls.

Agree. That is why we must please look closely at the issues and hope the person has character. I would rather have a cursing marine with guts to stand for the right of life than a perfect “church going man” who waffles at the question. Who can really tell what is in a persons heart anyway? I stood behind W for 10 years....wow was I disappointed in so many levels, i wish he had that Marine spirit! God Bless....pray for our Country

Great work, ElPatriota.

I guess he went for the stimulus this time - first time Alan Colmes ever said anything clever.

What a narcissist Sanford is. 20 minutes rambling on about himself & hiking - huh, pal you weren’t hiking, remember? Raking his family over the coals with this convoluted admission; pathetic emails; leaving his state unattended b/c he didn’t transfer power. Unreal.

Like his worthless affair is somehow special. He thinks we all want to hear this? And he takes off on Father’s Day weekend. Resign.

BTW, this was an emotional affair for 8 years. When your spouse has a “special friend” of the opposite sex, it doesn’t matter if it’s turned sexual or not. Your relationship is in jeopardy. Call them on it in a calm, rational, but unequivocal manner. If there’s a defensive denial of what’s going on & a refusal to change, be prepared to move on.

... Well, he'll pay the price now. "Character" matters!

Take a look at this one :)...

Argentina?... Do you know HOW FAR THAT IS?.... :)

Do you really think he couldn’t handle the pressure of being governor? He was one of the only ones who stood up against the TARP money, and even though he lost, he never sounded like he was distraught or anything like that.

Something about this is fishy. Having an affair is one thing, but was he really so stupid as to believe that no one would notice he was in Argentina for a week? Are we really to believe that Gov. Sanford was this stupid? Considering I can’t remember him being gone for this length of time in the past, something about this is just off.

The scene in “The Firm” springs to mind. It’s been so long since I’ve read the book, I don’t remember the character names, but Tom Cruise is set up to be seduced by a woman so that his bosses have something on him. Yeah, maybe I’ve watched too many movies, but the fact that it would take a level of stupidity far beyond what Gov. Sanford has shown in the past to do something like this makes me wonder if there’s more to this.

I agree. I posted in some other thread that this visit was likely more than just romantic. The timing is suspicious, as they say.

As far as pressure goes, I was speculating. I don't know. Maybe some 'new' pressures have come up.

I have to agree-—much more to this than a bumbling love sopped man. He was disoriented, had a glazed look,
could not look anyone in the eye...a real mess....and somewhere in Buenos aires there is “lady” laughing it up with her handlers.

He thought he would not be caught because his wife had “kicked” him out of “the house”. Is that the governor’s mansion or what? Had he merely left word that he was “on a cruise”, eyebrows would have still be raised with his wife in Columbia with those four little boys. He had best prepare for life post-politics, and it might be better to start doing so now, instead of eighteen months later. What about this Lieutenant Governor Knox? Is he on the left?

Maybe they will “find something” on “Goober” Graham next. SC people won’t like having an incumbent exposed. See how long they stuck with Thurmond and Hollings.

In 1974, an AR Democrat named Mills got involved with an Argentinian “Firecracker” too, and he was reelected, but he then retired for the 1976 election, which brought Jim Guy Tucker to Congress.

That would be Wilbur Mills and his stripper friend "Fanne Foxe", whose real name I disremember.

Mills was part of the Democratic Old Guard which got displaced the next year by what was called the "Watergate" class of new Democrats. The Tidal Basin incident with Fanne Foxe didn't cost Mills his seat, but he did lose his committee chairmanship.
