ABOARD THE PAPAL PLANE
Pope Benedict XVI said Tuesday that the distribution of condoms is not the answer in the fight against AIDS in Africa.
Benedict has never before spoken explicitly on condom use although he has stressed that the Roman Catholic Church is in the forefront of the battle against AIDS. The Vatican encourages sexual abstinence to fight the spread of the disease.
"You can't resolve it with the distribution of condoms," the pope told reporters aboard the Alitalia plane headed to Yaounde, Cameroon. "On the contrary, it increases the problem."
Some priests and nuns working with victims of the AIDS pandemic ravaging Africa question the church's opposition to condoms.
The pope also said that he intends to make an appeal for "international solidarity" for Africa in the face of the global economic downturn.
He said that while the church does not propose specific economic solutions, it can give "spiritual and moral" suggestions.
Describing the current crisis as the consequence of "a deficit of ethics in economic structures," the pope said, "It is here that the church can make a contribution."
Benedict's seven-day pilgrimage will take him to Cameroon and Angola.
Africa is the fastest-growing region for the Roman Catholic Church.

???
God’s moral laws and the consequences of breaking them are as immutable as His physical laws.
And that REALLY makes leftists mad.
He’s right of course. It doesn’t take a genius to realize that more condoms results in more disease and despair.
So Okay, I’m not sure how distributing condoms contributes to the increasing incidents of the disease.
I do know that the African poohbahs WANT Aids to spread because it keeps the people helpless while bringing in zillions in foreign aid. It’s how these countries operate.
Lookit, AIDS exists all over the planet. Yet only in Africa is it a huge problem . Why?
And washing your hands increases the likelihood of getting sick.
This is utter nonsense.
I think maybe Mr. Pope should read the instructions on his condoms.
” Condoms ‘Increase’ AIDS Epidemic in Africa”
“The Vatican encourages sexual abstinence to fight the spread of the disease.”
Surely, the Pope was misquoted. :-)
Sex is the poor man’s champagne.
Condoms ‘Increase’ AIDS Epidemic in Africa................ ??? What are they doing with them, chewing them?
Yes. Correct. It grants legitimacy to sleeping around. Which means there is more sleeping around. Which means there is more AIDS. The African countries where the emphasis has been on abstainence (ex., Uganda) have been more successful in combating AIDS than countries where the emphasis has been on condoms (ex., SA or Botswana)
Sound like they need a program in DC. Not enough condoms to go around.
You used washing your hands as a parallel.
Let me expound on that parallel.
Let’s say you’re gardening with manure before lunch, or cleaning up a messy diaper,
then you eat lunch, and wash your hands after lunch because someone assured you that handwashing keeps you from getting sick. This is the parallel to improper usage of the prophylactic.
It’s a false sense of security leading to risky behavior that causes disease.
Now, can you honestly say that following moral laws such as having sex only in the context of marriage as intended wouldn’t be “more effective” than giving out condoms and encouraging risky behavior?
Widespread condom use does not change the cultural problem: ignorance concerning HIV/AIDS and often promiscuity.
The 'A' and 'B' parts of the ABC approach, abstinence and being faithful, are far more effective in changing the culture.
Well, that’s an interesting comment. I hadn’t seen it that way before.
Keeping your John Thomas in your britches helps, however.
AIDS was identified more than 25 years ago. We all know how it’s spread. In very simple terms, behavior modification will prevent someone from getting AIDS. Why is it that after billions and billions of dollars have been spent on distributing condoms and AIDS education, millions are still getting infected.
If you don’t have sex, you won’t get AIDS. End of discussion.
There have been millions, 10s of millions of condoms issued in Africa over these many years. Has the problem slowed down? Has the spread of aids decreased? How about in the US? Are we stemming the tide of HIV with condom use? IF the answer is no, then duh, it isn’t working. Why? Because sin is sin and the wages of sin is death. Like it or not, believe it or not, you cannot break moral law without consequesnce. Sleeping with anyone other than your spouse will expose you to disease, and all the partners that person slept with. Condoms make you feel safe and protected so you are more inclined to engage in that behavoir. Protected sex is a misnomer. It is safer than nothing, but by no means foolproof. there is a tendency to take more chances when you feel your risks are reduced when taking them. Condoms encourage risk taking, therefore do not prevent the scourge of aids, and actually encourage it. Pope is dead on, balls accurate here. If an action produces a certain result that is undesired, rational people change that action. Only the insane would advocate more of the same and expect a different result. Sounds like our government school system. The system is broken, so spend more money, we spend more money and now the system is even worse. How do we fix it? Spend more money!! See how insane that sounds? you must fix the root of the problem. Bandaid on cancer comes to mind here......
