Lose your property for growing food?

Some small farms and organic food growers could be placed under direct supervision of the federal government under new legislation making its way through Congress.

Food Safety Modernization Act

House Resolution 875, or the Food Safety Modernization Act of 2009, was introduced by Rosa DeLauro, D-Conn., in February. DeLauro's husband, Stanley Greenburg, works for Monsanto – the world's leading producer of herbicides and genetically engineered seed.

DeLauro's act has 39 co-sponsors and was referred to the House Agriculture Committee on Feb. 4. It calls for the creation of a Food Safety Administration to allow the government to regulate food production at all levels – and even mandates property seizure, fines of up to $1 million per offense and criminal prosecution for producers, manufacturers and distributors who fail to comply with regulations.

Michael Olson, host of the Food Chain radio show and author of "Metro Farm," told WND the government should focus on regulating food production in countries such as China and Mexico rather than burdening small and organic farmers in the U.S. with overreaching regulations.

"We need somebody to watch over us when we're eating food that comes from thousands and thousands of miles away. We need some help there," he said. "But when food comes from our neighbors or from farmers who we know, we don't need all of those rules. If your neighbor sells you something that is bad and you get sick, you are going to get your hands on that farmer, and that will be the end of it. It regulates itself."

You said — “There are some local food coop groups (gardeners swapping veggies among themselves) that are being targeted because they aren’t buying their fair share of food basically and they don’t want this idea to catch on.”

It’s weird about this whole thing here. I always thought these community gardens and people growing some of their own food was a liberal idea and that it started from liberals doing it in certain areas and asking cities to set aside areas and certain land for doing this.

Maybe I was mistaken in who was pushing these things...

[Just let some government busybody come onto my property to tell me I’m going to lose it for growing vegetables to eat.]

I really think that so many Americans do not understand the brutality of communist government officials who have all the weapons and power who are staffed by corrupt violent people who will mock at your show and then may hurt or kill you.
Just like the communists of so many nations that subdue their people under the boot heel of total totalitarian governmental power. Communists do this and the people cower for fear of their life or their families lives. It is now in America and is getting worse.

In the interests of accuracy. This from an email I sent friends on 9 Mar. -

Some highlights:

The bill’s author gets large amounts of PAC money from agribusiness $2k from Cargill, $4k General Mills $4.5k Kraft Foods $5k Land O’Lakes, but most from various sugar producers -$28K

Also from AgriMark $11k but I don’t know what that really is.

You’ll probably read that her husband works for Monsanto - not really - but he has them for a client. Greenberg is a political scientist/pollster. He is in business with James Carville, among others.

During Stalin’s era, in Russia, the state produced all the food. However farmers would not farm. If they were told to take ten tons of fertilizer and put it on a certain field, they took the ten tons and dumped it in the middle of the field. There was no incentive to plant the seed properly and resulted in very poor germination. At the end of the [...day the farmers spent their spare time working in their own gardens where most of their food came from, and even sold some of it on the black market. Food was at a premium.

Some of you will remember that the Soviet Union purchased massive amount of grain from the U.S. to subsidize their own shortfall production.

If this is what Obama, and our congress, is planning I see many people in cities starving to death, because that is what happened in Russia.]

Agreed. This is why I was sick in heart and soul when Americans who do not know who the politicians are elected this madman as President.

"Just let some government busybody come onto my property to tell me I’m going to lose it for growing vegetables to eat."

When a Representative from the State Science Institute comes to your home he will explain how it is wrong of you and unfair to produce a bounty of food and hoard it to yourself when so many others have not the ability to produce their own food and are at a disadvantage.

Therefor the SSI will need to regulate your food growing process and then distribute your crops on the basis of fairness.

Change you can believe in!

Very true, but some of the blame has to lie with us, as well. We have, after all, sat by while they indoctrinated our kids in public school and then in college for DECADES. We’ve even sat by while the leftist-controlled mainstream media has blatantly leaked top secrets of the US to damage their non-leftist opponents in the White House. We have essentially LET them get away with all the crap that has led up to this ultimate coup, all the while KNOWING that it would come to this some day. And now it has and here we are. The real question is, are we going to just sit around on the pc and TALK about it until we’re all literally prisoners of Big Brother?

Say, isn’t there some rumor about the obama’s putting in a veggie garden in the front lawn of the White House?

If it’s good enough for them, it’s good enough for me.

I encourage everyone to submit this article to Drudge. Very few people know about this legislation, and a Drudge headline could help publicize this more.

It’s just plain creepy they want to take away every bit of the people’s control over our own destiny little by little. They must figure we can’t help but be slaves to the government, if there are no alternative choices.

This shouldn’t be a liberal or conservative issue either. This concerns us all. There are many liberals into organinic, local produce. If this makes it to the Senate, I will use that angle when I write my Democrat Senator.

Just trying on the paraphrase to see if it fits. I wonder if nonsense like this would help shake loose some of the Democrat Farm Labor votes in places like Southern Minnesota. Lot's of family farms down there that aren't part of the bigger corporate farms.

A month or so ago there were some articles about some group putting together a petition to get the 0s to put a vegetable garden in at the White House. I haven’t heard anything about it since.
