Barack Obama's offhand approach to Gordon Brown's Washington visit last week came about because the president has facing exhaustion over America's economic crisis and is unable to focus on foreign affairs, the Sunday Telegraph has been told.
Sources close to the White House say Mr Obama and his staff have been "overwhelmed" by the economic meltdown and have voiced concerns that the new president is not getting enough rest.
British officials, meanwhile, admit that the White House and US State Department staff were utterly bemused by complaints that the Prime Minister should have been granted full-blown press conference and a formal dinner, as has been customary. They concede that Obama aides seemed unfamiliar with the expectations that surround a major visit by a British prime minister.
But Washington figures with access to Mr Obama's inner circle explained the slight by saying that those high up in the administration have had little time to deal with international matters, let alone the diplomatic niceties of the special relationship.
Allies of Mr Obama say his weary appearance in the Oval Office with Mr Brown illustrates the strain he is now under, and the president's surprise at the sheer volume of business that crosses his desk.
A well-connected Washington figure, who is close to members of Mr Obama's inner circle, expressed concern that Mr Obama had failed so far to "even fake an interest in foreign policy".
A British official conceded that the furore surrounding the apparent snub to Mr Brown had come as a shock to the White House. "I think it's right to say that their focus is elsewhere, on domestic affairs. A number of our US interlocutors said they couldn't quite understand the British concerns and didn't get what that was all about."

Silent Coup: The Removal of a President
by Len Colodny (Author), Robert Gettlin (Author)
I’ll be very surprised if The O gets a photo-op with the queen after her country was so insulted.
Thank you very much for the information. They seem to be a very impressive organization.
Remember how the media bashed Candidate Bush for his lack of foreign exposure “never been out of the country...etc”?
He spent a whole summer with relatives of the Queen in Scotland when he was young! She knew him and his father and mother and liked them all, because they are gentlemanly.
Guess what Mr President. It is now your job to do these things. Do it, and do it right, or so long in 2013.
Signed,
The People of the United States of America
“W” and Laura Bush were the epitome of graciousness and hospitality at all times, especially to foreign dignitaries and anyone else. There are some of the Obamaphiles who are going to long for the days of “W”, although many over at the DeeYoo who are still clamoring for “W’s” head on a platter. (Ain’t going to happen. That’s when WE Conservatives need to have a million person March on Washington in protest if they try anything like that on our Dear “W”.)
Carter had run the State of Georgia as Governor.
Obama has run ..... absolutely nothing. Not even a Boy Scout Troop.
Obama ran on the color of the skin of the polygamous father that abandoned him at the age of two.
If Obama's father had been a white, Norwegian graduate student that abandoned him at the age of two and his name was "Barry Olsen", nobody in the entire United States of America would have claimed that a man with his meager experience was qualified for the Oval Office.
Nobody.
Absolutely nobody.
Obama was black and, in Joe Biden's words, "clean and articulate (as long as he was reading a prepared text off of a Tele-Prompter) and Americans eager to "elect the first African-American President", because of the color of his skin and not the content of his character, voted him into office.
The Year 2008 A.D. may be recorded in History as the year that the United States of America jumped the shark.
Obama's even worse than Carter.
White House’s gift to Gordo = some Hollywood DVD’s? Hahaha!
That sets a new standard for “tacky”.
This would all be hilarious if our country wasn’t being dragged into the abyss by this commie bastard.
So do you agree that President Obama treated the Prime Minister of the United Kingdom boorishly? Do you feel that our chief executive embarrassed our country? Most of the comments on this thread are about that underlying fact - not what a reporter in the conservative Telegraph has written.
“You mean President Bush, who is almost twenty years older than That One was able to handle the single largest attack on our soiil, and the economic crisis that followed, THEN was able to prosecute a war on at LEAST two fronts at the same time!”
Yep, SuziQ. Coke, partying, teleprompter reading and smoking tend to pull one down; add to that being “cool” and “hip” and it’s hard on the “Present”.
He’s too tired from talking too much.
Tired should not be in a President’s or anyone in a leadership position vocabulary.
No, not just "thirty-some-odd years ago".
As I posted to you, " Do you really expect Obama's people to rat him out in public? Did you really expect "Deep Throat" to rat out Nixon in public? Do you really expect informants to rat out their Mafia bosses in public on the Internet using their real names?"
As Just A Nobody posted to you:
"As to the lack of named sources -- in the 4+ years I've been here most of the hit pieces on President Bush never named sources and these pieces were in the NYSlimes, WaComPost, Time, NewsweAk et al, along with many broadcast smears. It never seemed to be an issue then. (Perhaps for you, but not for many here.)"
Expecting individuals to commit Hari Kari to satisfy your desire for named sources is totally unrealistic.
Obama is weak and lazy. What a bozo.
This article is still the number one most viewed on the Telegraph.co. website.
But there are plenty more articles of comment about the exceptionally rude treatment given to PM Brown. He didn’t even get a lunch with Obama!
You’ve got that right. Perhaps if he took a one day rest from jackhammering at the foundations of this country, maybe he could think a little more clearly.
Well, if that is the case then I am super impressed. Thank you.
