GOP Senators Risk Political Backlash Over Support of Stimulus Bill
fox news ^ | 2/7/2009 | fox news

Until Friday, President Obama's plea for bipartisanship support of his costly plan for stimulating the economy mostly had fallen on deaf GOP ears, but that changed when three Republican moderates pledged their support.

In doing so, Sens. Susan Collins and Olympia Snowe of Maine, and Pennsylvania's Sen. Arlen Specter risked drawing the wrath of their fellow Republicans and of some constituents

The trio's support is expected to give Democrats the 60 votes needed in the Senate to advance to a final vote on the $827 billion stimulus bill next week -- and ultimately push the controversial mix of massive spending and tax cuts over the finish line.

Collins said she broke ranks with her party because of the progress congressional negotiators had made on the bill.

"Well, I know that some of my Republican colleagues are unhappy with the position that I've taken," Collins told FOX News on Saturday. "I hope they will look at the fact that we were able to cut $110 billion of unnecessary spending from this bill. I think that's a good accomplishment. I also think that it's important that we do pass a stimulus bill to help turn the economy around."

I never expected any of those three to stand with the Republicans, considering how much time they've spent voting with Democrats over the last few years.

I’m thinking Rick Santorum had better open his primary campaign right now and put us out of this Specter nightmare!

I tried to call Specter Friday and his mailbox was full. So I got on his Senate website and sent him an email:

Anytime someone is pressuring you to do something immediately, they are trying to put something over on you. That’s the tactics of time-share sales people. They are slick and want you to make a decision before you have a chance to make a detailed evaluation. That’s exactly what’s going on here! And you recognized that, per your comments yesterday. But you’re falling for it and also going against the party to vote for it!!!! Why!!!!! It makes no sense!! This is a bad bill!! Please reconsider your vote and side with the American taxpayers. This bill contains liberals’ wish lists to cover 50 years. But this won’t be the end of it. This will only give them encouragement and they will go on and on with more bills like this!! The American taxpayer is doomed if this bill passes.

Sent similar emails to Collins and Snowe, omitting the part about his remarks on the floor.

I need to write DiFi too to tell her how disappointed I am that she caved, after she had said that she didn’t think she’d vote for it. But she did!!

0 is a snake-oil salesman. I still think he’s hiding something and that’s why he was pushing early voting so people would vote before they learned the secret.

The one thing we could all hope for is that the GOP sees the errors in their ways and starts correcting these errors. Throw these RINOs out.

People are going to pour into DC this weekend and hold the feet of GOP Senators and all democrat Congresspeople to the fire over the porkulus boondoggle.

Then Freepers and townhall.comers must during their upcoming primaries for 2010, send support to their primary opponents. I will. There is no other way. Writing as we all do with disgust never appeals to them or to their state voters. Only support for an opponent has any chance to dump them. Perhaps Steele and Mitch will give them tongue lashings too. I pray so. They are weasels to the enth degree.

No, ther won't be a backlash. There's a good reason those three are RINO's.

There won't be a backlash--at least one they could care about. They'll have lots of support from other democrats and certainly the MSM.

Just look at how the demographics and voting patterns in those states are trending.

Alas, Rick Santorum, endorsed ole Arlen when he ran against Toomey in the primary. There is some hope for PA, Toomey is planning a run for Gov.

Arlen Spector is an absolute disgrace. I do not think he has ever taken the GOP's side in any type of situation if it goes against the Democrats and the MSM ...

This clown is truly a goof unworthy of office.

Right, the conference will end up making it over a trillion when it’s said and done.

Just another outrages in a long series of outrages committed by the Fed Gov’t.
