Hackers Crack Into Texas Road Sign, Warn of Zombies Ahead

Transportation officials in Texas are scrambling to prevent hackers from changing messages on digital road signs after one sign in Austin was altered to read, "Zombies Ahead."

Chris Lippincott, director of media relations for the Texas Department of Transportation, confirmed that a portable traffic sign at Lamar Boulevard and West 15th Street, near the University of Texas at Austin, was hacked into during the early hours of Jan. 19.

"It was clever, kind of cute, but not what it was intended for," said Lippincott, who saw the sign during his morning commute. "Those signs are deployed for a reason — to improve traffic conditions, let folks know there's a road closure."

"It's sort of amusing, but not at all helpful," he told FOXNews.com.

If you’ve ever driven Rt. 222, you know that a huge net or snipers would be the only way to stop most of those a—holes from driving like maniacs.

Good choice.

And barely in time, because I am about to become a zombie myself after waking up way too early this morning...

Has anybody kept count of how many UTs there have been?

The road signs that have always baffled me are in Oklahoma. They read “Don’t drive into smoke”.

"Has anybody kept count of how many UTs there have been?"

I keep a fair running tally on my home page.

Among other things. (Abandon decorum, all ye who enter there.)

Actually, one way to keep score is to note that The Original Undead Thread started in June of '04. Then we had The Bride of The Undead Thread, and then it went to monthlies, starting in August of '05 with The August Chronicles.

So, um ... uh .. Well, you count them up.

Pay no attention to the foot stuck in the door, there; it’s keeping the Internet open for me.

It’s a good time of year for zombies. They’re so smelly in the summer!

They do tend to dry out though.
Mink oil works wonders at keeping the zombies from cracking and peeling too badly.

Yeah, if you just spritz them with water in the winter, they get stiff.

If you use neetsfoot oil, they end up smelling like a baseball glove.
Then all the sports fanatics come running and end up zombie chow.
This being a bad thing, the neetsfoot oil is locked away.
