President Obama will end the 15-year-old "don't ask, don't tell" policy that has prevented homosexual and bisexual men and women from serving openly within the U.S. military, a spokesman for the president-elect said.
Obama said during the campaign that he opposed the policy, but since his election in November has made statements that have been interpreted as backpedaling. On Friday, however, Obama spokesman Robert Gibbs, responding on the transition team's Web site to a Michigan resident who asked if the new administration planned to get rid of the policy, said:
"You don't hear politicians give a one-word answer much. But it's 'Yes'."
The little-noticed response, made in a video posted on change.gov, made barely a ripple outside blogs focused on the gay community, but that's not surprising, said those who have been pushing to overturn the ban. Not only was Obama's position expected, they said, but support for reviewing or repealing the policy has grown markedly in recent years, including from some unexpected quarters.
The end of "don't ask, don't tell" may not happen immediately, several critics of the policy said. Although they appreciate clarity from Obama on the issue, they anticipate that the demands of the economy and two wars are likely to trump a speedy policy reversal.
"The question isn't if we do it and the question isn't when we do it, it's how we do it," said Rep. Ellen Tauscher, D-Walnut Creek, whose 2006 bill to repeal the ban earned broad support among Democrats in Congress but did not move forward in the face of a near-certain veto by President Bush.
"I'm going to reintroduce the bill in the next few weeks," Tauscher said. "We've got the American people behind us."

So if the Comander in Chief is a fudge packer, it stands to reason that he must allow open gays in the military; or Obama's previous liasons with the bend over crowd in Chicago will be devulged in the media.
THe Sodomites in our military will form the infrastructure for the creation of Obama's civilian " military force" that he has been mentioning throughout his campaign. They will be the equivalent of Germanys historical " SS", political operatives who are stationed with, and spying on ALL of our military units and citizens like Rush Limbaugh, Jim Robinson, Rense and many others.
The IRS will be unleashed upon our conservative private citizens, and military personell who resist the devolution of our military will be forced to resign or retire, or worse, suffer accidental death in combat zones.
The fight for our freedoms has just begun. The 1st amendment and the 2nd amendment are both in jeopardy, as we speak.
I think that your argument makes a lot of sense.
Perhaps, my mistake is relying on the common sense of individuals and not fully appreciating the effects of government “regulations” on how people have to live their lives.
Going LDO or CWO for bubbleheads meant they would never serve on a submarine again. So, they ended up on tenders and support ships, or become skimmers. I had a SWS/SS qualified CDR (LDO) tell me there were compartments on AS-xx he would not enter on a post-watch tour. Universally, these were female berthing. “Get accused of rape, or have to report queers. No thanks.” Glad I retired when I did.
There's a reason that this Article is never used, unless it's part of an assault charge. Care to guess what that reason is? :-)
Who are you?
What are you responding to?
Why should I (or anyone) care?
Yes, but those arguments are true whether the love affairs or sex encounters are homosexual or otherwise. I remember arriving at a unit and within a week I knew which female lieutenants had “Monica” type skills and which of them were screwing their platoon and/or first sergeants. Imagine how little respect the soldiers in that unit had for them. Within this same battalion we had five straight months where every birth to a female soldier was out of wedlock. These are the things I think of when I hear people talk about how much more “professional” our volunteer force is.
I suppose you could call our armed service the happy hunting ground.
EXACTLY
and it should not be accepted either
LMAO! And you haven’t heard me go on a rant about this whole MLK Jr crap either. My body would have to be chopped up, this part to homo sensitivity training, this other part to race awareness training, this other part to...
Went to Walgreen’s today, youngest kid showed me a mag cover with Obama and something about the dream being realized or something. She sarcastically said “look Mom, the dream is fulfilled/realized” as she rolled her eyes and I replied, “heh, not my dream that’s for sure.” Old guy behind us laughed and commented that I better be careful or I’d be charged with a “hate crime.”
I doubt that the majority of the American military are.
I forgot to mention that that I have not been called a “punk” in about 40 years, Thanks!
I’ll bet that you imagine your cute tuchas gets the homos all excited. That explains a lot.
I back that too as I know many others in the military would
we have a war right now, it is not north v south but left v right and we have to win this instead of just saying well it doesn’t affect me or well what can we do . or even the worse one on this subject, well I know a couple of them and they are nice
Oh, and the RINO’s in the party were doing what? Keeping our head above water?
The GOP needs to get back to Reagan principles, plain and simple. All this coalition building is getting them nowhere.
And people had a doubt about him instituting a draft? It’s all a means to an end for them. Not only can he push volunteer numbers down to the point that we NEED a draft, but at the same time he can make SURE that those who are drafted are “re-educated” at the same time... Evil, but brilliant really. Communists don’t surprise me.
This is Obama taking the first steps toward destroying our military.
Do not harrass me again or it goes to the mods.
What’s “tuchas?”
BRWAAAAAHAHA
Again, sex is not nudity. I've actually been to clothing optional beaches many times, and I've been completely faithful in action, word, and thought to my girlfriend. She even visited that beach once.
There are horn dogs out there who think of sex even when the possible object of that fantasy is discreetly clothed.
I'll admit, there was a time I was fiercely anti-homosexual. I just figured out about fifteen or twenty years ago that they simply weren't all interested in me. I'll also admit that was a lot later in life than most young men still in the service are, but I didn't know anybody homosexual while growing up. Most younger persons today know someone of that orientation.
Which is easier to deal with, a guy you know is gay, or someone who is closeted, and you have no idea how he really views you? A latrine is not a sexual situation in any case, I can imagine situations where a beach might very well be. Even Larry Craig wanted the privacy of a door on his stall, you have none of that in the military.
What counts is behavior, not people's private thoughts that remain absolutely unexpressed. The military got over integration of the races ahead of the rest of our society, it's my opinion they will deal with this, too.
It is the moderates of the R party that selected a candidate that the “base” seriously disliked. The Base voted their conscience, collectively.
Bring forward a worthy, conservative candidate, and this doesn’t occur.
It’s funny, but saying this before, during, and after the primaries, and during the general campaign, brought derision and slurs, much like the ones you pronounce now.
I voted Palin/whats-his-name. Bite me, utahson. You, and those who espouse the BS you spew here, are the problem.
Principle comes before party.
