Pelosi Erases Gingrich's Long-Standing Fairness Rules
Human Events ^ | 5 January 2009 | Connie Hair

Posted on 01/05/2009 7:54:23 AM PST by Clinton's a liar

House Speaker Nancy Pelosi plans to re-write House rules today to ensure that the Republican minority is unable to have any influence on legislation. Pelosi’s proposals are so draconian, and will so polarize the Capitol, that any thought President-elect Obama has of bipartisan cooperation will be rendered impossible before he even takes office.

Pelosi’s rule changes -- which may be voted on today -- will reverse the fairness rules that were written around Newt Gingrich’s “Contract with America.”

In reaction, the House Republican leadership is sending a letter today to Pelosi to object to changes to House Rules this week that would bar Republicans from offering alternative bills, amendments to Democrat bills or even the guarantee of open debate accessible by motions to recommit for any piece of legislation during the entire 111th Congress. These procedural abuses, as outlined in the below letter obtained by HUMAN EVENTS, would also include the repeal of six-year limit for committee chairmen and other House Rules reform measures enacted in 1995 as part of the Contract with America.

I agree with the others that this is a fine article, and that it's good to see you posting on FR again. Knock 'em dead. Break a leg.

"Frankly, why don’t the GOP lawmakers grow some stones and just GO HOME if we are no longer to have a bipartisan legislature?"

I would love to see that...

In fact, that's probably the best idea I've heard so far on how to deal with these dreadful and dangerous people! "Re-write this, Madame Speaker...!!"

“why don’t the GOP lawmakers grow some stones and just GO HOME “

I think that would invite an election disaster even worse that what just happened. I can just hear the demos crowing during the next campaign, “Your elected Republican congressman did not even show up? Is that the kind of representation you deserve?”
I think that voting “Present” might at least sound better. But,,, really,,, voting “No” is still probably the wisest thing to do.

This was predictable. The GOP played footsies with these people and were unable to accomplish anything and came across as too weak and too compromising.

Thus the GOP did not accomplish what they were sent to do and were defeated now in two successive elections.

The Dems will not make the same mistake. They will accomplish their goals with brute force and with no attempt to work with, listen to, or consider GOP amendments or alternatives.

In their marxist fervor, the Dems will certainly over-reach...but the impact of their years in office and the amount of time it will take to undo what they set in motion will be dramatic.

Obama will oversee the most liberal, marxist, and damaging administration, with the full support and complicity of a liberal House and Senate in the history of this nation.

Libs’ worldview is all about addressing results directly.

They inherently have no respect for any rules (traditions, vows, oaths, Constitutions).

Those rules were written at a different time, and therefore, inherently without the information available to the current decision makers, and therefore, invalid as applies to present decisions. Yes, this IS how they think.

The biotch and zer0 were just on FNC gushing over each other At the end of their statements the press wanted questions answered, zer0 turned to his press secretary and asked if he could take and answer questions. I guess the press secretary said no since no questions were answered. zer0 did say that there be be a presser later in the day. I guess he needs to pre-approve the questions and have his staff give him the answers.

Yeah with the likely elevation of Al Franken bobblehead to the Senate, we are going to have to fight for our lives.

Really, it sounds more like Nazism. What with Obama talking about forming his own private army and doing away with any way for the people to voice any dissent.
The GOP is like a bunch of spineless wimps and not a thing they do will have any affect.

If the Republicans don't sweep the House in 2010 they are complete fools. In a country with a Free and Independent press, this would NEVER stand.

Not surprised.

I’m just curious - you Republicans in the House going to continue “reaching across the aisle”? Cause the libs aren’t.

“1) Democrats remove all political power from the minority party.
2) Democrats make a hash of everything.
3) Elections in 2010 and 2012 bring the Republicans back into power.
4) First thing the Republicans do is change the rules back so that the minority party recovers a great deal of political power.
You can see it like it’s already happened.”

You are EXACTLY right.

That’s not a bad idea. We have to do something because the republicans in congress obviously aren’t going to. We should also start a serious movement to boycott liberal media sponsors. We can kill them in this economic climate.

Here’s the problem with the Dem’s strategy

They are in a position where everything now belongs to them. If anything goes wrong, they have to accept ALL of the blame. They cannot deflect blame anywhere. I predict a lot of infighting in their future, especially if Franken gets in the Senate. This leadership has proven itself to be lethargic at best and better at criticizing than leading.
