Christmas Books by Thomas Sowell

Good books are especially good to give as gifts to the proverbial "man who has everything" because he (or she) may not have heard of a new book that fits their interests.

Good new books are one of the few good things about this past year. Here are some books that could make fine gifts, obtainable painlessly without battling crowds at the mall-- or even in the bookstores, if you order on-line.

The most outstanding political book of 2008 has been "Liberal Fascism" by Jonah Goldberg. It shoots to pieces the prevailing ideas of who is on "the left" and who is on "the right."

"It can become especially relevant in the coming year, if the new administration goes further with the government interventions in the economy begun by the outgoing administration-- the kind of economic policies that were at the heart of fascism."

Ouch. Hurts to see it in print...

I just took his advice and ordered one of the “Furry Logic” books for my sister-in-law. Cute.

Years back, Sowell recommended a trilogy of books by Daniel Boorstin. The trilogy is entitled "The Americans," and the first is subtitled "The Colonial Experience" and the second is subtitled "The National Experience." I cannot recommend the third volume, subtitled "The Democratic Experience," but the first two volumes I found highly stimulating and interesting. The trilogy was written decades ago . . .

If there’s anyone who hasn’t read Race and Culture (1994); Migrations and Culture (1996); and Conquests and Cultures (1998), they’re still as good as ever.

“Crime rates soared when our courts began to concern themselves with such things as the unhappy childhoods of violent criminals or the “root causes” of crime in general. Those who paid the highest price for these excursions into cosmic justice were not the judges or the theorists whose notions the judges reflected, but the victims of rape, murder and terrorization by hoodlums.”

Excellent. Thank you.
