WOODBURN, Ore. (AP) - A bomb exploded inside a bank here late Friday afternoon after explosives experts arrived to check on a suspicious object and authorities said at least one person was killed by the blast.

Oregon State Police said the explosion at the West Coast Bank caused "serious injuries" and that police officers were in the area when the device detonated. They did not say how many police officers were injured.

A spokesman for the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives told The Oregonian at least one bomb technician had been injured.

Marion County deputy medical examiner Rodge Womack said he has been told of at least one fatality. He said he did not know the identity of the victim.

Just 14 or so miles north of Salem.

I heard on the radio around Midnight that one officer and a bomb technician had died. Prayers for their families.

“Authorities decided to move the device inside the branch, apparently scanned it, and then it went off, he said.”

Brilliant

Actually, since banks have reinforced walls, moving the bomb inside probably was a smart thing to do, you know, contain the blast instead of sending shrapnel flying hundreds of yards in a very busy business district. If you think otherwise maybe you should come out here and tell the cops how to do their job.

I agree about a bank having reinforced walls. I was wondering why bank personnel were in close proximity to the bomb.

Why not breaking?

I’d rather see this kind of thing in breaking than 15 articles about Blago.

But maybe that’s just me.

They're still using people to move bombs? These guys need to hire one of these fast.

It seems odd they would take it inside, I guarantee there are plenty of containment vessels in the Salem area. It’s not everyday, but the area between Eugene and Portland has seen plenty of IED placements over the years. Most either go off without injury, or are found and disposed of before before they damage their target. The Salem-Woodburn agencies and OSP would have plenty of training in handling this type of thing - and about 7 hours had lapsed between first threat and this device going off. Perhaps one device was found outside, and another inside was undiscovered.

There is some confusion still about what actually happened. Those with firsthand knowledge were killed and injured. Prayers for them.

"Odd. Usually OSP just detonates/destroys suspicous objects..."

My thoughts exactly. I suppose every situation is different. With one dead and several injured you've got to wonder if bringing the device in the bank was the best option. Evacuate the area, stand back, detonate from a distance. The whole event is odd indeed.
