I have $2,000 to spend, looking to buy myself a nice Christmas present....

Posted on 12/08/2008 6:15:58 AM PST by Joiseydude

Looking to buy a semiauto assualt type rifle chambered in either .223 or .308. Any recommendations would be greatly appreciated. Availability of recommended rifle would be a plus, don't want to be put on a waiting list, already have a NJ firearms card to buy rifles and shotguns. Thanks

.308 is the only way to go.

I would go with an Armalite AR-10 or a Springfield Armory M1A.

But there are lots of other good choices.

"Convert it to gold coins ammo and bury it for the coming ‘hard times.’

Ammo's not going to do you much good if you don't have a gun to shoot it out of.

There is a Russian made 12 ga shotgun that looks like an AK 47 and handles a 20 shot and 40 shot mag.

saiga 12

"a Remington Model 742"

I've seen/looked a couple of those, but am concerned about the alleged lack of spare parts and alleged durability concerns.

If you’re going .223, the Stoner SR-15 is nice.

I have heard that all the AR, AK, SKS have flown off the shelves but the M14 variants are still around because they do cost more, I would love to have a Garand, if I could find one!

Nothing wrong with a cheap Chinese SKS as long as you realize its not worth trying to add $2,000 worth of aftermarket parts to it, its still an SKS. But the 7.62x39 cartridge is a very respectable cartridge for targets under 200 yards, thats what it was designed for.

The 5.56 or .223 was designed as a wounding round with the caveats of a larger haulout because of its weight. If I had to be on the run that would be my first choice.

The .308 I would put my money into as a longer range round unless you are real serious then of course bigger is better, its still possible to get a basic 50BMG if you look around though it would be over your budget and each time you fired one kiss a $5 bill goodbye.

Buy yourself an NRA life Membership, a used .22 bolt action (open sights), a box of .22 shorts, and donate the rest of the money to NRA-ILA, Gun Owners of America, JPFO or the like. In other words, try waking up to the attack on the 2nd Ammendment (coming to you on January 20th, 2009).

Depending on where you are, you could acquire two WASR-10 rifles and 5 cases of ammo, or 4 cases of ammo and a BUNCH of mags.

Rock River makes some very well build and reliable M-4 variants and with 2k to spend, nicely equipped. Some ammo and mags too.

.223/5.56, 7.62x39, 7.62 NATO, .22 lr....wouldn’t want to stand in front of any of them!

Good hunting!

Better buy it now. Obama and Pelosi have promised to outlaw all private semi-auto weapons in 2009.
