I have $2,000 to spend, looking to buy myself a nice Christmas present....

Looking to buy a semiauto assualt type rifle chambered in either .223 or .308. Any recommendations would be greatly appreciated. Availability of recommended rifle would be a plus, don't want to be put on a waiting list, already have a NJ firearms card to buy rifles and shotguns. Thanks

stick with .308. You want some hitting power.

save your money or buy some good dividend stocks.

Anything that shoots highly available ammo. NATO or 762.

What you want is a PTR-91:
Built on the HK G3 pattern, this is a great .308 rifle. CDNN Investmnents has them for less than $1000, making it a real value in a semi-auto battle rifle.

Convert it to gold coins and bury it for the coming ‘hard times.’

The M-4 is my favorite. However the AK47 is a good choice.
Do you really want someones opinion? There are tons of good choices, it is all what you like or are familiar with. I like the M-4 because I have probably shot 10,000 or more rounds with one, and I am quite comfortable with it.
I suggest you go find a range and shot a few different ones and pick one you are comfortable with.

I recommend the
Colt LE6920. I'm guessing they are around $1500.
Spend the rest on ammo and 30 rd PMAG's.

You're talking about two very different animals there.
If you want a full-size battle rifle, it's .308. The lightweight rifles are chambered in .223.
Ammo is more expensive for .308, but the cartridge is far more accurate, more effective, and has a longer range. The .223 was initially a compromise round not for accuracy or effectiveness but for portability and less recoil for draftees with no firearms experience. My husband was in the Army during the transition period from the M-14 to the M-16, and he loathed the M-16.
Of course, the .308 itself was a downsize from .30'06. But we don't care for .223 and never have, any of the cartridges that are necked down to .20 cal from a .30 cal base are more powerful and flatter shooting if you are looking for a varminter.
We have an old Belgian FN-FAL in .308, it's a superb battle rifle and extremely accurate. Drawback is that it is relatively heavy - my husband doesn't care since he's 6'6" and 240# and always wound up carrying the radio anyhow.

There is a Russian made 12 ga shotgun that looks like an AK 47 and handles a 20 shot and 40 shot mag.
Someone posted the name on here the other day.
