What's a legal semi-auto assualt type rifle in NJ?
Smith & Wesson Accurized M&P15. About $1,500.
I don’t know that anything labeled as “assault rifle” is legal in NJ. Basically, anything that “looks scary” is out.
My advice, buy something chambered for 5.56 and add the accessories you want as long as it doesn’t have 2 of the following:
Pistol grip
folding stock
flash suppressor
barrel heat shield(rules are foggy on this one, assume that if it looks “scary”, it’s illegal)
No weapon in NJ can have more than 15 rounds.
I’m sort of in the same boat. I’ve been wanting something in the same sort of thing, but I think I’m going to just settle for a bolt action 5.56(so that I can chamber the cheaper .223 for target). Either that or get a 22-250 which is something I grew up with.
It’s why I’ve been pimping out my shotgun. I literally bought the scope mount, 2 scopes, 18.5 LE/riot smooth barrel, sling and side saddle for it in the past 2 weeks. With my 24” rifled slug barrel and the new 2-7x32 scope, I’ll be accurate to 125yards(2in groups) with the Sabots. With the 42mm red dot scope(cheapy) and the Riot barrel with 00 buckshot, it’s a close range deadly bastard.
Telescopic Stock Flash Suppressor 30 round mag Pistol Grip Illegal in NJ. Even if you put a 15 round mag in it, remove the flash suppressor it's still illegal. Saw off the thread for the Flash Suppressor, put in a 15 round mag, saw off the Pistol grip, it might pass.

No telesopic stock, no flash suppressor. It does have a pistol grip.
Why hasn’t anyone taken NJ to court over their banning of firearms?
You might want to see what kind of job you can buy in Illinois state or the Obamanation for a couple of grand. The Senate seat and cabinet post are kinda pricey, but maybe there is a list price somewhere for the other slots.
I don't know that weapon specifically but when I went to the Smith and Wesson website, I saw this:
Model: M&P15
Capacity: 30 Rounds, 5.56 mm or .223 - Illegal
Stock: 6-Position Telescopic Strike One

To be accurate, the Pistol Grip is also a strike. That plus either the suppressor or the telescopic stock bans it. The 30 round mag makes it immediately banned.
As to the larger question...the ANJRPC, of which I am a member is the face of the NRA in NJ. The organization is constantly in Trenton fighting this garbage. Currently the 50 cal ban is on the table.

The 223 and the 5.56 are almost the same size, but not exactly. In a pinch, a rifle marked 223 can handle 5.56 ammo, but this is not recommended. A rifle marked 5.56 can handle either just fine.

Yes, even with the pistol grip. You’re allowed one “scary” option per rifle.
The real issue is one of safety. The 5.56 has much higher chamber pressures than the .223 even though the rounds are essentially identical. Most modern rifles chambered for .223 won't explode when you put a 5.56 in it, but I wouldn't want my face near it when I pulled the trigger.
Per the latest headlines, you should be shopping for a Senate seat or a Cabinet appointment.
Plus I read that AK-47 Ammo can easily be found in almost every country in the world. Not so with NATO rounds.
