I have $2,000 to spend, looking to buy myself a nice Christmas present....

Posted on 12/08/2008 6:15:58 AM PST by Joiseydude

Looking to buy a semiauto assualt type rifle chambered in either .223 or .308. Any recommendations would be greatly appreciated. Availability of recommended rifle would be a plus, don't want to be put on a waiting list, already have a NJ firearms card to buy rifles and shotguns. Thanks

Yes...:) A local gun shop here has them for rental at their range. I’ve shot it a few times, it’s a VERY nice firearm! The price is too high for my blood, but man - if you want to put a LOT of lead on a target in low time, it’s hard to beat.

And too many people forget that stopping power - kinetic energy - is 1/2 mv^2! Mass is important, but if you double the velocity - like the FN 5.7mm stuff - you get FOUR times the kinetic energy.

The times I have rented that unit I can tell you it’s as close to shooting a laser beam as you can imagine. NO bullet drop that I could detect, at any range. And they just get there in a HURRY.

Well the idea with the human predator is to immobilize it quickly so it isn't a threat any more . . . so really it's the same idea. Just like a deer, you don't want it running/functioning for one second longer than you can help.

The upside with goblins is that you don't have to worry about spoiling the meat. < /did I just say that? >

I’ve shot one too, you can keep a tight group still firing as fast as you can. I guess that’s because it was designed to keep a tight group at full auto.

There is of course drop, can’t deny gravity, but it’s on target plus or minus two inches out to the effective range of 150m. It starts a bit low because of the height difference between the barrel and sight, it’s actually aimed up a bit. Then it meets the sights at about 50m, goes up a couple inches, and depending on the ammo drops down to that again around 150m.

BTW, it has about the same kinetic energy on impact as a 9mm para, but you can carry a lot of them. Too bad we serfs can’t buy the armor-piercing ammo it was designed to use, although a version we can buy will pierce low-level armor better than a pistol.

BTW, an interesting feature of the bullet is the way it penetrates. Instead of mushrooming like a pistol or traveling straight through like most rifles, it penetrates a few inches and then starts tumbling around for several more inches. Nasty.

The Brits used to have the "Mad Minute" where you put as many rounds as possible into a man-sized target (forget the distance - maybe 100 or 150 yards?) in sixty seconds. They say that a trained infantryman could achieve 30 rpm -- I can't do any better than 15! (it's changing out the stripper clips that slows me down!)

I have read the training documents for the "mad minute" as it was called and they had a very strange technique for firing fast with the SMLE. They grasped the bolt with the forefinger and thumb and used those digits to work the bolt and used their little finger to work the trigger, they were capable of extremely rapid fire that way, but it took training. Training makes the soldier as far as I am concerned!

You can buy yourself a friend.

Now take me for example, I only cost 1995.00 (tax included), and I promise not to drink all your beer when I come over to your house.

Can’t go wrong with a Yugoslavian M59/66 SKS. Looks great, shoots straight, and they should still be just a couple hundred $$ if that much, leaving plenty of left-over dollars for ammo, after-market parts, or something for her (get two, His and Her SKS??):

Whatever your choices, at the moment they may have to be somewhat constrained by availability; everything is flying off the shelves. If you’re both patient and persistent, you’ll probably get what you want, but you may have to visit several shops and/or place an order for future fulfillment.

Yeah, I found that out. Visited several online sites and the most frequent phrase I saw was, "out of stock". Doesn't raise much hope for the brick and mortar stores around my area.

It might come down to how much of a premium above manufactors suggested list price I want to pay to get what I want.

Don’t lose hope; I’m pretty sure that you’ll get what you want if you’re willing to wait a month or two. There will probably be a re-enactment of the old, so-called Assault Weapons Bill, banning them, but I have the feeling that, with the economy in tatters and al-Qaeda baying at the door, congress won’t exactly put banning the black rifles at the top of the list. You’ll probably have until spring, IMO, and maybe longer. By then the shortages will, in all likelihood, have been filled and stocks will be high again.

Late to this thread but...

>>>There is a Russian made 12 ga shotgun that looks like an AK 47 and handles a 20 shot and 40 shot mag.<<<<

Is an “assault weapon” in NJ and therefore banned. No weapon in NJ may have more than 15 rounds. No shotgun can have a barrel mag. The rules are strict.

C. a semi-automatic shotgun that has at least 2 of the following:

1. a folding or telescoping stock;
2. a pistol grip that protrudes conspicuously beneath the action of the weapon;
3. a fixed magazine capacity in excess of 6 rounds; and
4. an ability to accept a detachable magazine.

By the way, just FYI, last time I was in there, a couple weeks ago, one of my local dealers, Eldon McElhiney, had a couple items that might interest you: one is a pre-ban Colt AR-15 sporter, with all the bells and whistles, in 5.56 NATO, and the other is a Springfield Armory SAR4800 in 7.62 NATO/.308 They’re both second-hand, but the Colt is cherry and the the Springfield, while a bit lower on the cherry scale, is still solid as a rock, one of the finest weapons ever built, and no doubt has years of service still in it. You can have a look at:

http://www.gunsamerica.com/910758088/Guns/Rifles/Colt-Military-Tactical-Rifles/Colt_AR_125_A2_H_Bar_Sporter_Pre_Ba.htm

and

http://www.gunsamerica.com/976994548/Guns/Rifles/Springfield-Armory-Rifles/FAL-Type/Springfield_Armory_SAR4800_Sporte.htm

and you can reach Eldon toll-free at 1-866-280-4330.

He’s a stand-up guy, and completely honest, and he’s not a family member or anything like that, so I’m not “on commission.” In fact, I almost bought the Springfield myself, but I’m already pretty well set up with regard to my needs/requirements. Anyway, it wouldn’t hurt to give him a call and see if they’re still in the shop.

I take it that those 4 rules also applies to rifles?

So a SIG556 SWAT would be illegal in NJ?

Yep, there are some oddball techniques for rapid fire. Single action revolvers also lend themselves to such (although fanning is dangerous and bad for the mechanism, there are other useful tricks).

Training is everything. Use of the tool has to become second nature, so that your hands work without thinking. And Practice, Practice, Practice!

HAHAHAHA!

In NJ? Scuze me a second....gasping from laughing so hard.

ahem, sorry.

Uh, yeah, that pretty much fails EVERY test.
Here’s a link to a PDF that has the details.

http://www.nj.gov/njsp/info/pdf/firearms/062408_title13ch54.pdf

There are other copies online but I’ve found them to have some errors. I live in Jersey too and am “pimping my shotgun” and found out that since it’s semi auto, a pistol grip + anything else makes it illegal. Folding stock + anything else, illegal. Heat shield + anything else makes it illegal. It’s just silly and insidious at the same time.

A. semi-automatic rifle that has the ability to accept a detachable magazine and has at least 2 of the following:

1. a folding or telescoping stock;
2. a pistol grip that protrudes conspicuously beneath the action of the weapon;
3. a bayonet mount;
4. a flash suppressor or threaded barrel designed to accommodate a flash suppressor; and
5. a grenade launcher;

B. a semi-automatic pistol that has an ability to accept a detachable magazine and has at least 2 of the following:

1. an ammunition magazine that attaches to the pistol outside of the pistol grip;
2. a threaded barrel capable of accepting a barrel extender, flash suppressor, forward handgrip, or silencer;
3. a shroud that is attached to, or partially or completely encircles, the barrel and that permits the shooter to hold the firearm with the nontrigger hand without being burned;
4. manufactured weight of 50 ounces or more when the pistol is unloaded; and
5. a semi-automatic version of an automatic firearm; and,
