An intended rape victim shot and killed her attacker this morning in Cape Girardeau when he broke into her home to rape her a second time, police said.

at the close ranges inside a house a shotgun has the same diameter pretty much as the end of the barrel....in other words...it might as well be a rifle or a pistol as far as hitting or missing.
A shotgun a close range does tend to be pretty final though if hit anywhere near vitals. shotguns have the benefit of not shooting through too many walls and are safer in a crowded house or crowded neighborhood.
On the opposing side let me point out that a shotgun is a LONG gun as is a rifle.
Long guns are hard to maneuver in close quarters such as a home. Homes generally have narrow hallways and furniture which may be obstacles which may prevent you from turning around and bringing your weapon to bear on your attacker.
A long gun also extends out in front of your body perhaps two feet or more. This can make it easier for an attacker to disarm or take your weapon from you.
A long gun is heavier than a pistol making it more difficult for the weaker amongst us to bring the weapon of target or hold the weapon on target.
Depending on the ammunition’s load the recoil of a shot gun can be quite severe where as a 9 mm and other non-magnum pistol loads can be tolerated by most anyone. If one has the money to spend, pistols with recoil compensators can be had to make the recoil very manageable.
A long gun typically can not be kept close at hand a pistol can be kept in a night stand drawer and be ready to bring to use in a few seconds. The woman in the article was fortunate to have the time to arm herself and be waiting for her attacker. Not all are so fortunate.
UPS (uninterruptable power supply/Battery backup) ought to do the trick. At least long enough to make a 911 call (if they don’t put you on hold)
Well I disagree with the premise in the article which is that he intended to rape the woman again. He may have intended to rape her again but I believe his main purpose was to kill the only eye witness to his crime.
The article states that he was a registered sex offender so he has prior convictions and knows what awaits him in prison.
It’s quite likely he threatened her with death if she reported his crime to the police. He probably intended to fulfill his threat.
I suspect he did no want to go back to prison and wanted to do what he could to minimize his chances of returning to the grey bar hotel.
On the bright side for him his victim made sure he didn’t.

I've never minded recoil, my Rem 870 in 12 doesn't kick that badly (it's a pretty heavy gun) and you can't break it and it always operates. On the other hand, my 20 ga. Rem 1100 skeet gun has a fairly short barrel and a Cutts compensator on it.
But my Stoeger coach gun in 20 ga. has almost zero recoil and the shortest barrel you can legally have. Downside is I only have two rounds. But after a year or so cowboy action shooting, it's amazing how fast I can get two more rounds in it under pressure . . .
The gun by the bed is a 45 ACP Sig-Sauer DA pistol, though. I wouldn't recommend it for beginners, but it's an excellent and reliable sidearm.

You are right of course, but the fact that he stumbled bleeding from the house and died several hours later gives the whole story a happier ending.

I’m glad you made this observation. The first time I read it I missed that part. In that case it’s too bad she didn’t fire twice, the first one a bit lower than his chest.

If he raped her, I doubt few would blame her if she shot him on HIS front lawn.

Obama’s Domestic Security force will make sure nobody, ever again, is able to violently and hatefuly shoot with a shotgun some poor, disadvantaged victim of our culture’s oppressive sexual attitudes.

I suspect this argument will be made from now till the end of time - shotgun or handgun for home defense. The arguments on both sides are sound and well thought out. I suspect in the end, it’s what are you most comfortable using when it’s dark, you’ve just been awakened from sleep and you’ve got at most a few seconds to think and to react. And also whatever choice you make, be aware of the limitations and try to mitigate them as best as possible. For example, choice of handgun caliber and load could mitigate (to some degree) how far a stray shot might travel.
